In honor of March 24.
23Other movies from 1984:
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
Star Trek III: The Search for Spock
Hollywood definitely peaked in 1984. Fight me.
Ok, so this turned into a post about 1984 more so than about March 24. Too bad. No refunds.

The Neverending Story
@mike808 The theme song from this still periodically bounces around in my head. It’s doing it right now…
@mike808 @shahnm Immediately, when I read “Neverending Stoooryyyyy…”
Romancing the Stone
Club music also had a good year in 1984.
“White Horse” Laid Back
“Girls Just Want to Have Fun” Cyndi Lauper
“Hold Me Now” Thompson Twins
“It’s My Life” Talk Talk
“When Doves Cry” Prince
“Caribbean Queen” Billy Ocean
“Let’s Go Crazy”/“Erotic City” Prince
“Like a Virgin” Madonna
There is also Wonder Woman 1984, although technically not exactly made or released in 1984.
/youtube Van Halen 1984
More music from 1984…
The Breakfast Club confuses me because it came out in '85. I know this because of this glorious photo, which indicates an impressive 6-month run for it based on the other movies:
@mossygreen Although looking at the site where I found the photo, it’s possibly/probably photoshopped. I know I saw 2 of these 4 movies, here, but based on wikipedia release dates they were five months apart. And as little was there was to do and as weird as teenagers were, they still probably wouldn’t have been showing The Breakfast Club continually for 10 months. And as popular as Back to the Future was, I imagine there were some holiday releases that would have pushed it off of the top listing. Assuming wikipedia is correct and I saw Brazil in December.
@mossygreen 3/24/84 was the date of detention… It took a while for them to make the documentary about it…
@shahnm Of course!
@mossygreen Saw all 4 at the cinema (at different times). Brazil is the only one I own on DVD and have watched multiple times.
@macromeh Still haven’t seen Pee Wee’s Big Adventure. I’ve probably seen all of The Breakfast Club over the years, but never all at once (and probably never will). I too own Brazil on DVD, but haven’t watched it in years. It’s probably time.
If you are an 80s fan, and have expendable cash, this is a freaking awesome week! Www.the80scruise.com
@cbilyak that looks totally tubular!!
KRULL! A SKULL! BRETT HULL! AWESOME!
@cbilyak I was thinking, “I’m not going unless Martha Davis is there,” and then the auto-playing video immediately showed me Martha Davis. It was a little scary!
@tinamarie1974 Groovy and far out.
@mossygreen she was great and SO gracious to all the fans!
@cbilyak Of course she was! She’s Martha Davis!
@cbilyak @mossygreen Hey, I just saw Martha drive by the other day - she’s my neighbor.
And then next year, we got The Goonies!
Care to make a case for The Search for Spock?
Some of the others on the list I didn’t like, but I recognize they had significant cultural impact. I’m not sure either is true for The Search for Spock.
But maybe you personally love it. I’d be interested to know what you like about it. One of my favorite movies is commonly on “worst movie” lists.
@Limewater It was the last Star Trek movie that I actually watched…
Momentous, I know!
@Limewater @shahnm If you hold with “the even numbered movies are good” notion, I call it Star Trek 2.5 instead of Star Trek 3, and proclaim it one of the good movies.
I think it’s absolutely incapable of standing on its own, but it’s a decent coda to The Wrath of Khan.
@blaineg @shahnm Huh. I strongly disliked pretty much all of it.
From the title and concept to the recasting of Saavik and the fact that she won’t shut up about the Kobayashi Maru to the goofy retcon they do the allow “new Spock” to have the “katra” (yes, I had to look that up) of “old Spock.”
Out of the first six it is the only one I actively dislike, though I’ll admit the first one is kind of boring.
@blaineg @Limewater It ended any desire I ever had again to watch any more Star Trek movies. In that way, it was a monumental win…
So… More 1984.
TV (new shows, anyway) peaked in 1984. Fight me…
