My birdbaths actually froze over a couple nights ago. In central Florida. That said, I can’t get enough of this weather! I vastly prefer it to sweltering humid summers.
@mehcuda67 It has been colder here; one year we had a week where it never got above freezing and when it went down to -19 a pipe burst in my garage (there’s a sink in there.) But these days it goes up and down so drastically, which is weird.
What imaginary numbers are you getting?
Are you in Minnesota? Or Alaska?
@Kyeh I know what you mean about the wild temperature swings, it’s been similar in NH this year, although we never got up to 60, unfortunately. I’ll try not to be too jealous!
@ircon96@Kyeh In 2019 we had -30* in January and by July it was up to 93* … we had 123* swing within 6 months in real temp. The “feels like” temp swing was even worse with closer to -50 wind chill and 110 heat index.
@chienfou@Kyeh@mehcuda67 Yup. Also that was a typical low when I worked in NW Ontario (in comparison when I was home for Christmas it made -5 (F) seem positively tropical. Sometimes it was -60 (F) at night. Days were about -30 to around -10. And we used outhouses, had no electricity, heated with wood and had to have an 8’ deep hole in the lake to get water. We had a couple of propane lights though and Aladdin kerosene lamps were about 100 watts, the others about 20 watts. Fun to do once but perhaps not twice. I decided I liked electricity, running water and central heat.
The Northern Lights were beyond spectacular. And if you stood still when everything was covered in snow it was so quiet you could hear your heart beat. Made me really respect what the original people had to deal with and early immigrants in this country. That they managed to accomplish anything past daily living chores was pretty spectacular.
@f00l I had the windshield covered so scraping was minimized, but struggled to get the doors open cuz the ice was 1/2" thick. Was afraid I’d break the handles.
Took me hours to get the ice off windshield. Cause using a spatula. Cause the scraper was locked inside the iced up vehicle.
This evening got the doors open with assistance. Then was able to clear the windshield. Vehicle starts.
Back lift gate, electric motors for the side mirrors, and wiper motors still non functional. Hope they’re just frozen.
A few places around here low teens. Mostly low 20s.
The sucky thing is that this is the ice belt. It was pouring yesterday evening. Snow didn’t start until we already had 1-2" or more of rock hard ice everywhere. Now we have maybe an inch of snow on top of the ice.
At least the local powers had the sense to close the ice-luge-death-chutes (aka toll lanes).
So far, the ultra-special-precious-Texas-power-grid is functioning.
I don’t know how the grid was adjusted to prepare for this year’s weather. A wee bit of winterizing, maybe?
Of did they just bribe the politicians to stand around the grid, breathing on it and making speeches at it?
I’m indoors right now, warming up, so I’ll leave off the bigger questions.
@compunaut@f00l@Kyeh Likely all the things you mention are just frozen. Up north we had heated things you put in the keyhole. Just don’t use a hair dryer on any glass. If there are chips or cracks anywhere you could set off a crack. Did that once with the defroster while driving in temps slightly sub zero. Watched the crack with a chip (originally about 1/4" and filled by some company the insurance company sent me to - obviously not well) spread across the entire windshield. Sucked.
And like you I am hoping our water holds out once this reaches us. Frozen and burst city water system pipes all over the place the last time Houston sent us this junk. 32 days of no water for a lot of the city. I think we are doing better on the electric grid though than Houston.
@f00l Is that the recommended method for thawing out a fuel tank?
I used a portable steam cleaner on my door lock so I could get in and start the car. It had unlocked OK, but handle was frozen. I was careful to keep the spray away from any glass or rubber. I wasn’t foolish enough to go drive/skate on the local roads, just wanted to move the car out from under the old large tree that occasionally sheds a major limb, in case the promised ice accumulation gets too heavy for the old thing.
So far, here in central Tx, no power grid issues such as last February’s rolling blackouts. Maybe the threatened rebellion popular outcry from last year got the pols’ attention and they properly chewed out (and/or replaced) the appropriate asses at ERCOT / PUC.
(Love your description of the tollways.)
Curious, what’s the motorcycle count out-and-about been there? I saw lots of zanies out on Central in Dallas last time I was there several years ago (in warm weather).
@f00l@phendrick I’d think using a steam cleaner to heat things up will just make it worse later forcing moisture in there to re-freeze. Well unless you had no moisture added in the steam cleaner.
@Kidsandliz Yeah, I didn’t consider that; it worked for the nonce and so far no noticeable consequences. I figure that part was more or less exposed to the elements, anyway. I did it aimed down from above onto the area of the handle, as rain would drain anyway, so maybe none the worse. (I didn’t spray into the actual keyhole, because that part had unlocked OK anyway.)
I’m generally pretty liberal with WD40 on door parts anyway (though not recommended for keyways proper).
I have stuff to do. I’m not acclimated to this cold weather, at all. Back in the 80s, when we were first married, he was interested in moving out of California. I said “no place cold, no place humid”.
I’ve lived in both (dad was in the Air Force) and said they both sucked.
@lisaviolet 36* for me too when I took the dogs out this morning. I’m with you on the cold/humidity. I would rather tolerate the few 120*+ days we get here than to struggle through months of ice and cold.
@lisaviolet isn’t that what the kittens are for? Body heat?
(Don’t feel bad for them there was another empty bed and another larger heated bed with just Alex in it. Momma and the girls just decided to get in a pile)
@Kyeh@lisaviolet it’s sometimes impossible to get rid of dartanyan during the day. He’s on my desk and in the way and jumping in my lap etc. The others show up.
Whatcha and he found the first mouse that’s made it in the house in years. I messed their excellent tracking up trying to get it but got him later. They were. Very good kittes. In that they were all over his ass. IDK how much damage they did seemed to just be cornering and batting him but.
They can all be caught sleeping on me on the couch when it suits them other then snickers. Well once or twice. She absolutely knows who she is and will come running but she DOES NOT want to be touched. That’s fine.
I think I’ve had 4 on the couch sleeping at once. Others adjacent. Coco can still be a little eh of they get in her space and I really need to get their balls cut off soon before… Anyways
Momma. Well I know she comes down now and then. I leave her alone cause. She just does not want anything to do with me. I toss her treats. Stayed to long on that one the next shot was
Snickers ran. Whatcha didn’t care. Momma got her teeth out. She’s no danger but she’ll hiss “go away” or back up if you get to close
@Kyeh@unksol the other night we had five of the Avengers between us. It’s not a problem until they start playing with one another. The rough wrestling type of play.
Last night I got up to pee and had a hard time getting back to sleep. Both the dog and my husband were synchronized snoring, so I headed out to the sofa. Before I even had the blankets straightened out, there were two kittens on me, with three to follow.
@Kyeh@unksol Brian mentioned yesterday that he’s really happy we got the kittens fixed when we did. It would be a nightmare right now. He said “all the yowling and girls in heat”. I reminded him that the boys would take care of that.
@Kyeh@lisaviolet Coco was never fixed. She howls/gets clingy now and then but it’s sort of cute. Occasionally people hear EWOH? EWOH? On calls. Otherwise I just yell coco over here and let her snuggle.
The boys have to go to the vet. Soon. I don’t need more especially inbred. Getting the girls in carriers would be a nightmare. Momma and Snickers are not going to let me get them easily. And would hate me more. So. I’m kinda resigned to it. They don’t go out. No balls come in
@Kyeh@lisaviolet because someone has to be on watch. To stand against the dark. To protect the sleeping innocent. To jump from on high and dispense justice.#6
I’m guessing pressure cooker as a launchpad . No idea why
[1]:
@Kyeh@lisaviolet it’s more the chasing them around, flipping the couch they will hide under and tackling them… Could I? Sure. It if was TNR obviously. But since Mom is just. Content if I don’t bother her and snickers is happy and comes and plays. She will sit right next to my head. Just doesn’t want a hand coming at her.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
What’s three more
Oh. Right. Well. Hopefully not that.
The boys no big deal. I can grab them. They don’t even know. I tell them but they don’t speak english
@Kyeh@lisaviolet although what carrier? I can scruff the friendlies and drop them in so far. That normally does the ones I can get my hands on. But might not hurt to have in case I actually have to tackle one of them cause they hurt themselves.
We actually were able to get Nooby in one of them with zero problems. But it took a few months. He’s the cat who got into our yard that we never saw. We have a camera on the roof and I would change the position and was able to see him that way in the evenings. Brian fed him on the deck of the doghouse on the bank (we had three larger dogs at one time) and we could watch him that way.
Called his name every time. (Now he comes running to us when he hears his name.) He finally got relaxed enough to let us see him when we were in the yard. Then we started feeding him on the patio table.
Then we started putting the food in one of those carriers, with the door and top open. It got so that he’d eat even if we were standing nearby. And one evening, the door was closed, he jumped in to eat and we closed the top and brought it into the bathroom and he was off to the vet the next day.
He wasn’t really good around the other cats, very territorial, but he’s gotten a lot better over the years. He’s a lap kitty, likes to sleep on or next to us when we’re watching television.
And since the kittens are getting bigger, he’s playing with them. Something I think he tried with the older cats, but they didn’t see it the same and fights would break out.
But these carriers have been great. Very helpful at the vet’s office, taking a reluctant cat out.
It’s 20 right now but says it feels like 6. Tomorrow is supposed to be really cold high 18 low 1 and we have the humid cold so it gets bone chilling. My cousin that lives in Alaska doesn’t even like coming back here in the winter anymore bc of the humidity.
I’m already tired of shoveling snow and cleaning off the car. It was 5 (with the windchill) at 4pm when I shoveled the sidewalk again. I’ve been freezing at work while in my office. Drafty windows and cinder block walls in a corner of the building, combined with a badly set up heat/thermostat and an exterior door right outside my office made my space 56 according to the air intake of 1 space heater. The 2nd space heater and ‘house boots’ helped. Idk what to call them, they are mukluk brand and are like slippers, but as boots. Along with my Sherpa lined jeans at least the afternoon was tolerable.
It’s supposed to be over, but we could still get another 1/2” tonight. I’m ready for spring.
Supposed to get down to 5°F by morning, but I think that may be optimistic forecasting.
The snow seems to have stopped at around 3" so that’s not too bad except for the layer of ice underneath laid down by the sleet before the snow started.
That’s West Texas near Lubbock. Glad I’m off work a few days, but I bet I end up driving my wife. Oh well.
@2many2no@f00l As far as I can tell, it’s still a cultural wasteland, but my kid is a CompSci + Math major and a most complete nerd so we might not be the best judge.
They do have Evie Mae’s Pit Barbeque and Blue Sky burgers, so there’s that.
@compunaut@f00l There are 40 wineries in Lubbock and surrounding counties, also almost every imaginable variety of places to eat.
Thank to the TTU Music Dept, the Lubbock Symphony is pretty decent. The Ballet only does a few things annually, but the Nutcracker was fun.
Unfortunately we have fallen off the routes of most tours. I need me some Papa Roach or 5FDP, but they ain’t coming here. We are getting some classic acts (Styx, Kansas) now that Buddy Holly Center is open.
Need more museums dedicated to other things besides settling the prairie, although one of those giant windmills is pretty impressive when you walk around it. The “doghouse” on top is bigger than a school bus.
But all you big city folks please stay the hell away or the dust in the wind will get you…
/image Lubbock haboob
I didn’t dislike Lubbock last time I visited. Found it interesting. Smaller than I expected. (Long time ago, that.) Just wished for a bit more cultural variety, for the sake of my hosts.
And … it’s rather a long damned way from other largish cities.
All of the South Plains/Panhandle region combined has less people than Tarrant County. There’s a lot of stuff out here, but it’s spread out over a couple of hundred miles. That being said, if anyone says they’re going to the Mall, you know where they’ll be since there is only one. It’s actually kind of nice that “far away” means anything more than 15 minutes during the busy part of the day.
Obviously, most people prefer big cities, because that’s where most people live. I’ve moved away from enough big cities to know, for me, they’re great places to visit, but generally should be avoided. A lot of people do dislike Lubbock and, except for politicians and real estate developers, that’s the way we like it.
@2many2no@compunaut@f00l The catch with smaller cities is medical care. When I lived in AR it took 2 hours and 15 min to get to specialists. We had 3 doctors in town and a 10 bed “hospital”.
Hey, I kinda enjoyed the Great New England Storm of 1978, which had snowdrifts up to the 2nd floors in some places, and the leavings didn’t melt till May as I recall.
That is, I enjoyed it until I sat in an I heated movie palace (heating busted) for three hours at about 10F to watch The Seven Samurai.
This was pre-VHS and I really wanted to see it.
The film was insanely good. But I wound up really sick for weeks.
@f00l@narfcake@unksol I’m originally from North (Chicago 'burbs). What we have now barely qualifies as proper winter (that blast we had last year that broke the power grid - pretty damn cold), but these sleet/freezing rain storms that leave 1/2-1" of SOLID ice on everything outdoors really suck. It’s completely unnavigable until it warms enough to melt (usually 2-3days) OR locality spreads sand or some other gription. Since most around here aren’t really willing to pay taxes for anything, it’s usually the former.
@f00l I saw Dune (1984) in a theater with busted heat in Spokane in winter. They had a couple of those flamethrower-looking kerosene heaters in the lobby. Surreal movie in surreal circumstances.
It is not that cold… look at Orlando, go north to Washington, DC or maybe the state of Washington. To really appreciate your warmer temperatures check out the temps/snowfall in Winnipeg Manitoba or maybe Yellowknife, Northwest Territories ( think) then you will say it is warm here.
My dad is in his 70s and lives in eastern WA. So far it’s been really cold there for weeks and often he has to get outside to shovel snow!
I’m near the Rockies and I’ve got the temperature swings - last week it snowed and got down to -6 degrees, today, so far, it’s 42 degrees and yesterday it got into the 50s.
Yeah I’m pretty much feeling the same but I have stared to get myself out from this boredom because I live stream on Thoptv on my iPhone.This makes my life entertaining, I suggest everyone to give it a try!
@lisaviolet I wouldn’t have replied if i was spamming in the community! One more thing i think this community is about expressing what you want to and technically that’s what I did! I hope you understand!
@lisaviolet I think you’re right, maybe if I look form your perspective this might look suspicious but I will be participating in the community from now onwards! I apologize to you as well if I was offensive in anyway! and yeah the Giphy was good!
ya know, if it wasn’t for the freezing rain, this weather would barely even qualify as a cold spell.
My birdbaths actually froze over a couple nights ago. In central Florida. That said, I can’t get enough of this weather! I vastly prefer it to sweltering humid summers.
It’s -3 here right now.
60 during the day on Monday, half that Tues., half that, i.e. 15, Wed. Supposed to be back to the 40s this weekend.
@Kyeh You think -3 is cold? Our thermometer started spitting out imaginary numbers!
Or Alaska?
@Kyeh My daughter texted that it was -5F when she went to work this morning (Denver). Rough for a PNW native.
@macromeh Yikes!
@Kyeh @mehcuda67
What? You are imagining 100 degrees or -40 degrees?
@Kyeh I know what you mean about the wild temperature swings, it’s been similar in NH this year, although we never got up to 60, unfortunately. I’ll try not to be too jealous!
@ircon96 @Kyeh In 2019 we had -30* in January and by July it was up to 93* … we had 123* swing within 6 months in real temp. The “feels like” temp swing was even worse with closer to -50 wind chill and 110 heat index.
@ircon96 @mbersiam
That sounds terrible!
What’s weird here is how drastically the temps can change within one week.
@ircon96 @mbersiam
September 5, 2020.
@ircon96 @Kyeh that looks pretty crazy day-to-day. I can’t say I distinctly remember a 60* difference in a single day… but we get wild swings here too.
@Kidsandliz @Kyeh @mehcuda67
fun fact -40 F is the same temp as -40 C.
@chienfou @Kyeh @mehcuda67 Yup. Also that was a typical low when I worked in NW Ontario (in comparison when I was home for Christmas it made -5 (F) seem positively tropical. That is interesting!
I can hear a neighbor scraping ice off their car.
Not yet in the mood to attempt similar.
I bet the car doors are iced shut.
/giphy flamethrower
@f00l How cold is it there? How is the power grid holding up?
@f00l I had the windshield covered so scraping was minimized, but struggled to get the doors open cuz the ice was 1/2" thick. Was afraid I’d break the handles.

@compunaut @f00l There are 40 wineries in Lubbock and surrounding counties, also almost every imaginable variety of places to eat.

@2many2no @compunaut
I didn’t dislike Lubbock last time I visited. Found it interesting. Smaller than I expected. (Long time ago, that.) Just wished for a bit more cultural variety, for the sake of my hosts.
And … it’s rather a long damned way from other largish cities.
I did get to experience a dust storm tho.
@compunaut @f00l Lubbock IS the “largish” city.
@2many2no @compunaut
I’m all for small town life (far smaller than Lubbock), assuming the place is reasonable.
Right now my life puts me in DFW, my work and family and friends are here and fortunately I’m on the less-traffic side.
It’s OK.
@2many2no @compunaut @f00l The catch with smaller cities is medical care. When I lived in AR it took 2 hours and 15 min to get to specialists. We had 3 doctors in town and a 10 bed “hospital”.
I’m not going to say that it’s warm enough here in SoCal that the A/C is on at the office. That would be cruel.
@narfcake eh. Technically Id call this a mild winter. But. It’s obviously not for people further south.

(paraphrase of statements by Alice Roosevelt Longworth, Dorothy Parker, and others)
@f00l @narfcake hey now.
He’s mocking you cause he’s warm.
I’m mocking you cause you didn’t want to play my drinking game and what you think is freezing is… meh.
you’re an all-star
@narfcake @unksol
Hate the ice more than the cold.
@f00l @narfcake @unksol I’m originally from North (Chicago 'burbs).
@mycya4me Or even Northwest Ontario. I was there one winter. Nights were typically 40-60 below (F) and days were typically 30 below to about zero (F).
If it gets much deeper, I may have to shovel.
Still below freezing though.

@lisaviolet come on! Just because I have placed a link doesn’t mean I’m spamming!
@lisaviolet I wouldn’t have replied if i was spamming in the community! One more thing i think this community is about expressing what you want to and technically that’s what I did! I hope you understand!
@JohnnyBairstow Well, you did just join the community last week. You haven’t starred or responded to any posts other than this one.
Sorry if I misread your intent.
@lisaviolet I think you’re right, maybe if I look form your perspective this might look suspicious but I will be participating in the community from now onwards! I apologize to you as well if I was offensive in anyway! and yeah the Giphy was good!
