bed of my truck has an outlet. 400 watts max so it’s kinda limited. i don’t use it often but i’ve charged my batteries, ran an orbital sander, powered a home stereo, and plugged in lights. would be more useful if it had enough power to run a table saw or chop saw
@spacemart yeah, a lot of the built-in inverters are kinda anemic. I’d use them more often during communications deployments but nearly everything there is some variation of DC and it’s way cheaper to run that on a DC-DC conversion than to double convert AC-DC. They’d be handy for some of the tools I might like to have for fireworks, but anything with a battery would charge more efficiently on DC anyway. Beefing up the internal system is certainly possible, but the good big inverters are almost as much as getting a generator to go with them and that’s probably the right way to go for many people.
@mediocrebot@mycya4me except if you are in Cambodia. There they have them on either side. And your biggest car safety equipment is a working horn. Not a seatbelt. Mostly their traffic is chaos in slow motion. Oh yeah. And don’t make eye contact first as then you are the one who has to give way. The centerline is there for decoration purposes only.
@LaVikinga Going to need more power for that – a 1000w inverter to be on the safe side. Most are 700-900w; even the small single-cup Hakol that was sold here before was 600w.
@narfcake Imagine the look of the first responder’s face as he looks at your windshield after the accident. Would he ask himself, was that narfcake or just a crockpot previously full of chili?
@narfcake I want to say that a loaded slow cooker is a brilliant idea, but I am also a little concerned about how safely clean that ends up being. (I trust the food to stay clean enough in its container; I’m concerned about the vehicle.)
Or, in other words, how do you prevent the food from sloshing out and making a mess? Do you have the lid bungee-corded down, or do you just make sure the food is non-sloshy?
Bonus question: How do you not get overwhelmingly hungry from constantly smelling the cooking food? At home, I can just spend the majority of my time out of the kitchen. But while on a road trip… and I think the amount of boredom from driving would make it that much worse.
@xobzoo Lid was strapped on and the whole cooker was placed in its own box to contain any potential mess. It was then set in the rear footwell and with the box blocked in to minimize movement.
If all that failed, the Husky floor liners I have hose out.
As for being tempted, I know it can wait. Paying attention to the road always took priority.
@narfcake@xobzoo Why do I get the feeling an image of Homer with the wheel in his left hand, a spoon in the right and a crock pot sitting on Bart’s lap in the passenger seat would seem more plausible?
@blaineg@mycya4me@narfcake Aargh. Thanks for the earworm!!! (Sometimes I think I have the most earworm-susceptible brain in the world. I don’t even have to hear the actual song, just the title!)
@blaineg@Kyeh@narfcake@unksol@werehatrack You see they did NOT have a Vaccine for Chicken Pox, Measles or the Mumps when I was a kid. So of course since most are Childhood viruses, I caught Chicken Pox & Measles, for some reason I never caught the Mumps. Not they have a MMR which covers all three.
So if you have had Chicken Pox, then You have the Virus that cause Shingles! My Dad had a BAD case of the Shingles. There is Not much you can do except putting calamine lotion on all the spots. I can tell you also I had a Extreme small spot in the middle of by Back years ago, (before the shot) The 1st doc looked at it then ask for the Sr, Doc in charge of the office to look. They said I had it. take theses pills, we caught it very early! PTL.
@blaineg@Kyeh@mycya4me@narfcake@werehatrack oh I had chicken pox. So the bastard is lurking. It was the 90s when they still sent you to your friends house/made sure all the kids got it at once. Cause there wasn’t an alternative
There is a chicken pox vaccine. And there is a better shingles vaccine.
@blaineg@mycya4me@narfcake@unksol@werehatrack Somehow I grew up thinking I’d had a chickenpox shot; maybe my mother even thought so. Anyhow I didn’t catch it until I was in my mid-20s! And it was awful. I have gotten the shingles vaccine, for sure.
@blaineg@Kyeh@narfcake@unksol@werehatrack I was told you should not get the Shingle vaccine till after 50! Oh BTW you also need to start getting you colon checked. oh that is such “FUN” Really the prep is the worst, as you are asleep during the time they run the probe up your colon!
If you’re 55 through 69 years old, before having the test, talk to your provider about the pros and cons of having a PSA test. Ask about:
Whether screening decreases your chance of dying from prostate cancer.
Whether there is any harm from prostate cancer screening, such as side effects from testing or overtreatment of cancer when discovered.
Whether you have a higher risk of prostate cancer than others.
If you are age 55 or younger, screening is not generally recommended. You should talk with your provider about if you have a higher risk for prostate cancer. Risk factors include:
Having a family history of prostate cancer (especially a brother or father)
Being African American
If you choose to be tested, the PSA blood test is repeated over time (yearly or less often), though the best frequency is not known.
Prostate examinations are no longer routinely done on men with no symptoms.
No such thing. (Unless you mean the vaccine.) A friend got shingles in his early 20’s. He hit the top of his head on a bolt on a heavy truck’s mirror. The shingles started there and ran down one side of his face, into his neck and body, including a spot on his eyeball. They were concerned about eye damage, but fortunately that didn’t happen. He had a very mild reoccurrence in his 50’s.
It hit me at 57. I know symptoms can vary widely, but for me it went from a painful itch to intolerable pain in a couple of days, and it was several days more before the rash showed up. My initial diagnoses was “No idea what your problem is, take two aspirin and don’t call us in the morning.” Once the spots appeared they started taking it seriously and giving me some actual treatment. But for several days it was about 300 on the 1-10 pain scale, and I was curled up in a ball wishing I could just die. I wasn’t at all suicidal, but death would have been a welcome release.
At the time Zostavax (50% effective) was the only one available, so I got that after enough time had elapsed. When Shingrix (90% effective) became available, I got that as well, on my doc’s recommendation. Zostavax has been discontinued in the US.
Oh BTW you also need to start getting you colon checked. oh that is such “FUN” Really the prep is the worst, as you are asleep during the time they run the probe up your colon!
Last year my doc recommended the stool sample test instead of the colonoscopy. I flunked that, so I got the scope as well. And got a clean bill of heath, and “see you in 10 years” on that.
Yes the prep is so much fun.
I wonder if all the alien probing tales are folks mis-remembering their colonoscopy?
I’m about 100 the last couple of days then, whole body ache reaction from vaccines.
I guess I should note that this was unusual. Normally it’s just a sore arm for a few days, if anything. I got the Covid and high-dose flu shots at the same time at work. Either that’s a bad combination for me, or I’m getting old. (Naw, couldn’t be that.)
At SWMBO’s last doctor visit, she recommended getting the flu & Covid shots a week apart, as it’s easier on the immune system. Maybe that was good advice for me too.
For my Mom 93 at the time in looking back (even though that Medical pros said it was ok) for Her it would have been best for her to space them apart.
it sent her system for a Major loop, thought we might loose her, but she bounced back within a week. Mom had to be under 24/7 medical care for that period. (Medicare) paid for that week.
She never came home after that. Her care had got beyond what I could provide.
Yes I can agree with you! It does match the description of all those tales!! So You do Wonder!
“Or if gastroenterologists are actually aliens?”
Yes that is a very good point, It truly could be!
I wonder who thought of/ Invented the Prep that is done for a colonoscopy?
BTW Now after two colonoscopy. I can say they found on polyp on the 1st & 2 on the 2nd, None of them were bad, Said you are in good shape.
But due to some issues after the 1st one I had go to the emergency room, they found another issue when they trying to discover the issue that took to the Hospital.
I had a small mass on my left kidney. It was also Not cancer. in fact all the times I go in for some like like that… it is NOT cancer.
@blaineg@Kyeh@narfcake@unksol@werehatrack 1st off You have know that my Dad’s CB handle was “TightWad” He was Cheap! He did NOT buy cheap stuff, He demanded a Discount, Loved the Flea Markets/ Yard sales, An Item could be marked 50 cents, but he would offer 25 cents.
So after he got the shingles wasn’t in the worst of if, He told my Mon to go get the shingles shot, he did NOT care what it cost, just go get it!
It is said that the Virus lives around the nerves. so so trauma’s to the body can set it off! It just sits around waiting for some event, as a present left over from having Chickenpox!
@blaineg@Kyeh@mycya4me@narfcake@werehatrack hmm Dad and granddad were also titewads/garage sale/goodwill/flea market shoppers. Which I have fond memories of. And we had a CB to call between the cars when I was a kid. Cancer got them both… So… Lot to unpack in there.
@blaineg@Kyeh@narfcake@unksol@werehatrack
At one time before Dad got sick, the House was being furnished & we were being clothed in “Early American YARD Sale” stuff. I do regret not going more often to watch a Pro Yard sale Master at work, I know some of the other Pro Yard sale folks hated to see him there 1st!
One time Dad had got so much stuff, he even picked up a trailer (yard sale buy, Of course too) to haul all his “Treasures” he bought. You should have seen Mom’s face when pulled into the driveway!
I have a (very) mini fridge that can plug into a wall outlet or my car’s lighter, uh, power port. I got it for free from Temu, and I keep it in my bedroom to keep some cold drinks up there.
my car HAS an outlet, the most i’ve used it for is a string of Christmas lights in the festive season…
Tried using it to help my elderly dad move his snow blower from the shed to the garage, has a pull start, and a 120v AC starter…the car doesn’t put out enough juice from the built in inverter to run the starter.
Most likely I’d plug a laptop charger into the car outlets. Yes, one can get ones that are powered off the DC accessory plug, but they aren’t something that comes stock with the laptop.
@mycya4me@PooltoyWolf Do those facilitate access to some sort of doggie carpool lane that I’m not aware of? I’d be willing to deal with picking up some inflatable poop if it’ll save me 30 minutes going to work and home.
My truck has an outlet for the back seat that my kids is for cell phone chargers. It also has an outlet for the box of the truck that I’ve only used once but it was so worth it. I picked up a bunch of used Christmas display items and plugged them in for the ride home. It was fun to see people reactions to a lit up waving Santa while driving around!
I might plug in the charger for one of my cordless tool batteries, but I really can’t think of anything else that I would be likely to use such an outlet for. Mostly, that’s because I have acquired things that run on 12 volts to fill the needs that I have encountered previously.

@narfcake I’d love to be able to make coffee while on a long road trip, even if it was K cup style coffee.
