We lose power every time a squirrel farts. We finally got a whole house generator installed, so when the power go out, it kicks in automatically and we’re up and running like nothing ever happened. BEST. THING. EVER!!!
I quickly wake the children by shouting “POWERS OUT! TO YOUR STATIONS! THIS IS NOT A DRILL! EVERYONE UP!!!” while banging on doors and walls. If we were allowed to have pots and pans, I’d bang those together, but the shouting works just fine. Once the children are on their stationary bicycles with dynamos attached to supply auxiliary power, I jump on one of my own and we start peddling as if the world depends on it, because it does.
@mcanavino But what about the poor crew trapped in Schrodinger’s Holodeck? You can’t have forgotten that the hatch locks when the power is interrupted…
@werehatrack Don’t worry, one of them will unlock the doors by disabling the safety protocols and generate a holofire which will cause the ship’s fire suppression to kick in and evacuate the room seconds before the air is removed.
@mcanavino@werehatrack eek, Holodeck was worst (or best, or maybe just laziest) plot device ever. If they removed holodeck-based plots, that would nullify about 1/2 the Next Generation episodes. Not saying it’s still not great, at the time, but… yeah overdone a bit much IMHO.
Our power never goes out. Never. It doesn’t storm bad at my house, In the 13 years I’ve been here we’ve never lost power once.
Two nights ago I was just about asleep and I herd the tornado sirens. I almost went to sleep (bc it just doesn’t storm bad here) but I thought I better get up and check bc I’d be kicking myself if this was the one time it was actually going to. Nope, not here. didn’t really even get windy, just a bunch of lightning in the clouds. A tornado did touch down about 30 mins away though.
@Star2236 Wow, you’re really lucky, don’t ever move! Lol… Although, i would be afraid of jinxing myself by saying it out loud (or, in this case, typing it to your buds at Meh)!
The only time I’ve experienced an extended power outage was three days during an ice storm back in 2007. Other than that, the longest has probably been under fifteen minutes. So I sleep through them and set the clock on the microwave the next morning.
If there were to be a longer one, my UPS should start beeping after about half an hour of keeping my internet/NASs alive. I have a flashlight on my nightstand, another in my vehicle, and a mini lantern, all powered by batteries I charge every three months. Once I shut down the UPS, it would be back to bed.
@Kabn We get remarkably few extended outages, basically only seeing more than a couple of hours once a year or less. The last time we had a multiple day outage was during the aftermath of hurricane Ike. That said, we get lots of brief outages primarily because of highly conductive squirrels, and sometimes pickup truck drivers with very poor aim. These are independent issues, not interactive.
Make sure nobody is trying to steal from my trunk.
Don’t notice because it’s the middle of the night. Zzzzzz
Sleep through it and find out about it in the morning.
9 out of 10 times its weather related. Unless it is a life or death situation it can wait.

@karlajoy except the noise of the generator will wake you up, plus all your neighbors who have to listen to it even though THEY don’t have power.
Depends if my wife notices.
I’ll make the rounds safely shutting down the systems on the network so that the various UPS units don’t get drained, then go back to sleep.
Look outside and see if the street lights and/or neighbors’ lights are on. That will tell me if it is local to my house or not.
@phendrick This is the correct answer.
I set out lanterns in the kids’ rooms and go back to sleep.
Switch to my battery powered oxygen machine and hope the power comes back before I go through all my batteries.
The generator turns on automatically. So, unless I hear it kick on, I’ll sleep through it.
It’s hard to check the breaker box in the basement when you don’t have a basement.
@werehatrack so THAT’s why I can’t find mine!
Eat the ice cream before it melts! (I don’t think I invented this humor, unfortunately).
Report it to the power company.

I transfer power from the main deflector to the life support through the primary dampers in engineering to compensate for the Heisenberg flux.

@mcanavino @pmarin OTGH, it gave James Darren a second career boost at a point where he was seriously considering retirement.

Maybe it will give my boyfriend a reason to go up north lol

Three EcoFlow Deltas FTW And 660W of portable solar if it’s still out in the morning.
