If you are craving ice cream or a similar treat, what’s your number one choice spot.
What’s your second choice?
What’s your I guess they have this also level choice
My number one doesn’t exist any more. Penn’s Magic Swirtle was a tie in with celebrity apprentice some years ago, made by a Walgreens store brand (Delish maybe?). It was a very rich vanilla ice cream with salted fudge swirl and caramel turtles. I wish it existed today.
I can dig on pretty much anything Blue Bell makes. King Cake when it’s around, and creole cream cheese also has a spot in my heart.
I guess they have this also: those terribly air-whipped ice cream type substances in the store (what is that, Breyer’s?). You know the ones that when you pick up the container it weighs like half the one next to it. But it’s still kind of ice cream, so it’s better than nothing.
Weird but surprisingly good: WalMart had a mango habanero coconut ice cream that was actually pretty refreshing. It was spicy mango sherbet (using the spicy flavor that hit the sweets world a couple years ago, I’m sure) swirled into a simple coconut ice cream. I don’t know if it’s still a thing, but I liked it.
@djslack I remember that swirtle Ice cream! One of the three episodes of apprentice that I watched in my lifetime, and I tried the ice cream when I found it. Pretty good
There’s a local frozen custard place. They are amazing. They have a different flavor every day along with chocolate and vanilla so you can get a bunch of stuff mixed in to change it up.
@RiotDemon I LOVE Blue Bell’s White Chocolate Almond, but since the listeria thing, they don’t make it anymore. I still have an empty carton in my freezer. lol
@Tadlem43 I had no idea about the listeria thing. I only tried blue bell because I was watching someone rate a bunch of ice cream and was intrigued by the Banana Pudding flavor. I still haven’t found the Pudding… So sad.
I didn’t know their headquarters are in Brenham, TX. I spent a night there recently. If I looked harder maybe I could have found Banana Pudding.
@RiotDemon I don’t care for the banana pudding flavor, but to each his own.
The moo-lennium crunch is pretty good, and they have some others that are decent, but my very favorite brand (and, granted, I’m not that much of an ice cream person) is Tillamook. The Vanilla Bean is great (all of their vanilla is good), and they have a caramel crunch (I don’t remember the name) that is wonderful!
@RiotDemon@Tadlem43 This is my current favorite ice cream. I can’t believe I didn’t try Blue Bell until a few months ago, but Haagen Dazs and Ben & Jerry’s and Talenti keep discontinuing flavors I like, dammit.
This is divine!
@Kyeh@RiotDemon It IS!! and what I usually get when I buy Blue Bell.
If you like white chocolate, keep your eye out for the white chocolate and almonds. They used to sell it in the fall (sometimes, in some areas, year round), but I don’t know if it’s gone for good or not. Get on their mailing list. They’ll tell you about all the good stuff!
@RiotDemon@Tadlem43 Okay, thanks! Each store seems to carry only a few of the flavors around here. I want to try the Wedding Cake but I haven’t found it yet.
@chienfou@tinamarie1974
True Saint Louisans know that ain’t no concrete.
That’s some kind of “pee-can” sundae in a cup 'cuz whatever search engine /image uses sucks my Louisiana pecans.
@chienfou@mike808 I always find this interesting as I hear all the time how native St Louisans cannot pronounce words like pecan, wash, fork, 44, etc. Please tell me where these people reside as I have never met them and I have lived here my entire life.
Here is one of many articles. I will concede that many towns or streets come from our french heritage and are 100% mispronounced.
@chienfou@tinamarie1974
That’s because the French settlers from New Orleans brought it with them. Including the “What high school did you go to?” interrogatory. Plenty of “mispronounced” street names here in St. Louis sound completely normal to my New Orleans ears. Calliope, Terpsichore, Tchoupitoulas, Nachitoches, and other idiomatic vernacular. I’m about to pass by my mominem’s and step down.
Annette’s Homemade Italian Ice, Bissell @ Armitage in Chicago. Many years ago my parents and some partners owned a building about a block south that we worked to rehab for 2-3years. Nothing like a frozen lemon ice after a hot summer day doing construction work.
Blue Bell Southern Blackberry Cobbler ice cream. More like ‘crackberry’
Braum’s German Chocolate. It’s not bad. [Note: Last year Braum’s had Deep Raspberry Ganache - WAY better than your average flavored ice cream. Sadly, it doesn’t seem to be available any more ]
@Star2236 It’s only available seasonally (summer), so can be hard to find even in Blue Bell’s home state of TX. Indiana is probably the closest place for you to find it.
What part of MI? Last year Ashby’s had a Marion Blackberry ice cream flavor - not sure it’s still available. Aren’t there Ashby’s all over up there?
@Star2236 Oops, I misunderstood. Ashby’s Sterling Ice Cream is a family-owned, MI-based company that makes over 70 flavors of premium ice cream, sherbet, sorbet and yogurt. They say their products are available at 800 places in 30 states.
I think the closest ones to you are Dixie Frosty Freeze in Clarkston & Orion Coney Express in Lake Orion. The Dixie FB page seems to include the Ashby’s flavors that they currently serve.
For store bought, this… Same ice cream I posted on an Aldi vs. Lidl thread. Otherwise, my favorite reason for going to the Outer Banks is to go to Kill Devil’s Custard. Though the custard from Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers is great.
First choice, my own homemade Banana Buttered Pecan which nabbed me a best of show ribbon in the ice cream contest at the State Fair of Texas a few years back.
Second choice, Braum’s butter pecan or black walnut.
Third, Ben and Jerry’s fudge brownie or if I don’t want to shell out the bucks; the Aldi equivalent.
But face it, even bad ice cream is still pretty good because it’s ice cream.
@mehcuda67 here ya go!
Banana Buttered Pecan Ice Cream
2 cups pecan pieces
1/4 cup butter, melted
pinch of salt
2 cups whole milk
1 1/3 cups sugar
3 tablespoons flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
4 eggs
1 12 ounce can evaporated milk, chilled
2 cups heavy cream
4 medium sized really ripe bananas
1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon Vanilla, Butter and Nut Flavoring (note: can find this at Kroger or substitute 1 teaspoon vanilla and 1/2 teaspoon butter flavoring)
Saute pecans in butter and pinch of salt until toasted. Drain on paper towels. Cool and refrigerate for later use.
In large mixing bowl, combine sugar, eggs, flour and salt. Set aside. In medium saucepan, bring milk to a boil. Add hot milk to egg mixture and return to saucepan. Cook over medium low heat stirring constantly until custard has thickened. Do not let custard boil. Remove from heat and refrigerate several hours or overnight.
When ready to make ice cream; mash bananas and combine with lemon juice. Add custard to banana mixture. Add cream, evaporated milk, flavoring and blend well. Add pecans and freeze in ice cream maker according to manufacturers directions.
Place: Amy’s. (Flavor decisions vary there.)
Packaged: B&J Cherry Garcia, which I’m told is one of their top three flavors, but that does not surprise me.
My first would be a good old fashion custard, sadly we really don’t have any right around me. We have custard places but their not the good old fashion kind.
Second would probably be kilwins or cool jacks. Cool jacks has a banana pudding ice cream that’s to die for and kilwins is just awesome at everything.
Third would be Dairy Queen or baskin robins bc their right down the road. I also like good frozen yogurt.
Store bought my favorite is Jenny’s bramleberry crisp.
I’m so going to get ice cream today.
As someone that was a Bresler’s Ice Cream franchisee for a few years, I can attest to the fact that there are not many ice creams that I don’t like.
Living in a small town the options are strictly “what is in the supermarket”, or DQ. Even in the next largest metro area, there is a dirth of ice cream stores…
@chienfou Tillamook ice cream is in the grocery stores now, but maybe not in your small town? They are really good but they do “limited edition” flavors so two that I absolutely loved are no longer being sold.

@djslack Seconded on Creole Cream Cheese ice cream. I remember stopping for this treat at the Borden’s shop on Airline. Alas, 'tis no more.
Dairy queen, vanilla dipped in chocolate shell.
In store I usually go for Publix premium vanilla.
I have found a new one that is delicious though.
/image moo-llenium crunch
@RiotDemon That sounds really good. I get bear tracks when I go to Publix.
@RiotDemon Local custard place sounds like Culver’s
@katbyter Culver’s is garbage compared to my local place. It’s just that good.
@RiotDemon Found the moo-lennium. I’ll keep an eye out for a sale. Turns out the one I like is Bear Claws, Publix brand.
@sammydog01 sounds pretty good but I’m not that into dark chocolate. Is it bitter like most dark chocolate?
@RiotDemon I LOVE Blue Bell’s White Chocolate Almond, but since the listeria thing, they don’t make it anymore. I still have an empty carton in my freezer. lol
@Tadlem43 I had no idea about the listeria thing. I only tried blue bell because I was watching someone rate a bunch of ice cream and was intrigued by the Banana Pudding flavor. I still haven’t found the Pudding… So sad.

@ybmuG Chocolate almond
@sammydog01 That is the best! Especially when they mix in the almonds right before you eat it!
@ybmuG We used to go to Don and Bob’s back in the day. They had really good custard too,
@ybmuG yum. And for $8 they have a shake that’s bigger than a big gulp, y’know for sharing, and not a mechanism to give oneself a massive stomachache.
There’s a local place here called Martha’s Dandee Creme. They do awesome soft serve. Favorite flavor is mocha (coffee/choc twist).
POPSOCKETS! ROAD ROCKETS! SONNY CROCKETT! AWESOME!
Marble Slab Creamery. I like Ice Cream Hibachi.
Second choice: Baskin Robbins.
Is my meh choice: Dairy Queen.
@Targaryen are they like Cold Stone Creamery?
@Thumperchick Exactly.
@Targaryen Are they better than Cold Stone? I love Cold Stone, and have never tried Marble Slab, wondering whether it’s worth a twenty minute drive.
There are a couple of good places in STL

Blackberry cobbler sounds so good, I looked for that ice cream but they don’t sell it anywhere in MI.

@tinamarie1974 The mothership on Port Washington. I lived on Hampton. Biking to work every day didn’t do a fucking thing for me.
@mike808 that is the one!! I know Hampton, I actually have a friend who lives in that area (Hampton and 43)
The other places I like in that area are the Gyro Palace (across the streer) and Samurai (up by the pick 'n save)
For store bought, this… Same ice cream I posted on an Aldi vs. Lidl thread. Otherwise, my favorite reason for going to the Outer Banks is to go to Kill Devil’s Custard. Though the custard from Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers is great.
Freddy’s frozen custard. Chocolate. Locally, United Dairy Farmers.
We have a place called Gelati Celesti. Yesterday’s flavors included lavender, cicada, and don’t ask. I went with black raspberry.
@sammydog01
You didn’t try the cicada???
@Kyeh I’m pretty sure it was vanilla with chocolate covered pretzels but every crunch would make me wonder.
@sammydog01 I don’t blame you for choosing the black raspberry. That sounds great!
If you ever find yourself in Monroe County, NY you’ll definitely want to try Pittsford Farm Dairy’s ice cream. It’s… awesome.
HIKING! VIKINGS! STRIKE KING [BRAND FISHING LURES]! AWESOME!
@er1c I’ll be there this summer- and buying one of whatever that is. Maybe two.
@sammydog01 I found that image on a D&C article.

Mr. Freeze in Perrysburg Ohio outside of Toledo, when I’m down that way. Those are (Ohio) buckeyes in that cup.

@ironcheftoni If you ever feel compelled to share the recipe for one of your creations, I’d wager that some of us would be grateful!
@mehcuda67 here ya go!
Banana Buttered Pecan Ice Cream
2 cups pecan pieces
1/4 cup butter, melted
pinch of salt
2 cups whole milk
1 1/3 cups sugar
3 tablespoons flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
4 eggs
1 12 ounce can evaporated milk, chilled

When ready to make ice cream; mash bananas and combine with lemon juice. Add custard to banana mixture. Add cream, evaporated milk, flavoring and blend well. Add pecans and freeze in ice cream maker according to manufacturers directions.
@ironcheftoni That sounds amazing at every level!
I will probably need to do three batches to fit in our little 1.5 liter Della.
I regret that I can give only one star, so here are a few spares!
Place: Amy’s. (Flavor decisions vary there.)
Packaged: B&J Cherry Garcia, which I’m told is one of their top three flavors, but that does not surprise me.
@werehatrack
Amy’s?
Where is this magical place?
@compunaut Three locations in Austin and one in Houston. The Houston spot is just off the N Shepherd exit for I-69.

@chienfou Tillamook ice cream is in the grocery stores now, but maybe not in your small town? They are really good but they do “limited edition” flavors so two that I absolutely loved are no longer being sold.
