@lljk True, but that doesn't mean people will pick a number at random… we're not very good at that. For given ranges, people will gravitate toward certain numbers when just asked to choose one. I think (and this poll shows that) there is generally a tendency for people to pick a number close to - but not - the midpoint.

@zachdecker No, I'm logical - and I waited until very late in the day to post this, when I could have posted after @JonT went to bed last night after his Periscope. That would have been evil. I (and more than a few others) immediately figured this out, not exactly rocket science - but as far as I know we all sat on our hands all day.

And BTW, I ordered mine early and picked 4.

There are other forums where this has been a topic of discussion today - they're even betting (real money) on how much the total number sold goes up in the last fifteen minutes of the sale.

Just kind of frustrating because I already promised the extra one to my sister and her three small kids (I voted 7) after visiting the ice cream maker page and seeing the 1817 number..

Meh added 91 of the ice cream makers to the winner's orders, making the new number 1817.

When they do products as giveaways, they do it through their order system to make it easier on the warehouse staff and to track information.

@mOONmOON Because the official number was taking at 12:15am. That's why they gave us a time. At that time, it was 1816 sold.

@Thumperchick A bunch of us were discussing this contest on another forum. I won $50 on the fact that orders / cancellations didn't spike at the end of the day - I was one of the few that had faith in the Meh community and we three split the pool money (came out to $49.75 each, woohoo - then I had PayPal fees of course - blah!). I REALLY liked the idea behind this contest and hope it may be repeated in some incarnation in the future. I still say they should wait the full hour to proclaim the winner though - that way any orders placed at 11:59PM Eastern will have cycled out of self-cancel eligibility.

@Pavlov Just curious: This sales chart looks like it's got a spike on the right to me. But as I poked around, I saw that there's consistently a spike in the last few minutes on just about every sale. This one looks to be a tad bigger, but it turns out to be pretty common. So is it just that it wasn't significantly different from the usual, or am I missing something?
