@PlacidPenguin I’d show my receipt, but I don’t want people to know which Wal-Mart I shopped at.
Surprisingly, I have the patience of a saint sometimes. I don’t know if it’s because I’ve worked retail for so long, or what. The only people I got slightly annoyed at were standing in the way, or driving ridiculously stupid.
I’m going to test my luck in a little bit and go grocery shopping.
@f00l I tried that, but then I always had to wear shoes because the bottom of my feet were black. (The dust that results from grinding the metal my husband does is all over everything.)
@communist you know… As I was standing in one of the aisles, looking at an item, a lady started going, “excuse me, excuse me ma’am”
I was like, surely she doesn’t think I work here. Turns out she just thought I was tall enough to reach an item for her… And as she was complaining that they put the item way too high, I see the item where it lives on its regular height shelf. She assumed the over stock shelf was where the item lived.
@RedOak I finally managed to get my brother to tell me that he needs some new dickies shorts. So I went to get him a pair to go with the rest of his gift. It was the last pair in his size. Lucky me.
@RiotDemon I will admit I’ve ordered some tool/car maintainance stuff from Walmart for store pickup (lowest price) and both times it went fairly well. After 10+ minute waits at the pickup counter with only a single person in front of me.
@RedOak I try not to go to Wal-Mart because it’s not that special to me. I’ll go there occasionally to buy shorts or what nots, but I’m slowly finding stuff in other places. A lot of people I know like to shop there for groceries. I’d rather pay a little bit more to shop at Publix (only in the south east) because it’s less hassle and the customers usually aren’t as rude.
@RiotDemon we’re very familiar with Publix since the SE is where we in the upper MW escape for a bit in the winter. Publix seems like a decent enough place.
But we are lucky enough to have the regional big box, Meijer HQ’d in our state. It equals or beats Walmart for everyday grocery pricing, has good loss leaders, an excellent rewards program (MPerks), and generally solid if not perfect customer interactions.
@RedOak I worked at a Wal-Mart a long time ago. After watching the cashiers take refrigerated items (mostly meat) that customers didn’t want, leave them under their registers for hours before giving them back to someone to return to the shelf, I stopped buying meat of any kind there. I wasn’t a huge fan of the taste anyway.
Kinda like at a restaurant - if the bathrooms the restaurant knows we can see aren’t clean, how can we expect the food prep areas & processes be any cleaner?
You can have your Walmart purchases shipped there. Usually almost no wait and fast CS. You don’t have to deal with people returning piles of clothes or toys.
I went to the grocery store. It was a zoo. It seems like everybody was stopping their cards right in the center of the aisle so nobody could pass everywhere. I wanted to scream.
It probably doesn’t help matters that I’m sleep deprived and feel ill.
@jbartus yep, the grocery store was pretty bad. My favorite was the lady going to move her cart out of the way for someone and the other lady said it was fine… So she just left her cart totally blocking me. I just drug it out of the way. Had to do that a few times because people are inconsiderate.
I had to say excuse me a lot because people were so oblivious to anything around them.
It wasn’t as bad as hurricane prep days, so that’s something.
@conandlibrarian oh how I hate long slow lines. All other things equal I will abandon a store that can’t get that part right.
We have both Costco and SAMs memberships but used to hate going to SAMs due to the Walmart like service and permanently slow lines.
Until SAMs came up with a truly competitive advantage - its “Scan and Go” app. As you put stuff in your cart you scan it with your phone camera. I’ve never seen a better, more responsive bar code reader - you barely have a chance to get the bar code near the target range before it responds. It adds the item to your list and reports the price. When you’re done shopping, skip the check out lines! Tap the checkout button and pay with your preloaded credit card. Walk straight to the door where they’ll scan the bar code now displayed on your phone. Done.
Good to know. Because of the lines and that they moved the best Sams Club from where in was a quick visit to where I will never purposely drive, haven’t been in one in years.
Avoid Costco except at opening or closing or during working hours same reason. Unless I’m buying glasses.
@jbartus when I used to work at a grocery store they would sometimes stick me in express since I was fast. It was boring as hell because most of the time I just stood there waiting for people to count change.
I welcomed the families that had two or three overflowing carts because it was a few minutes where I didn’t have to mindlessly talk to people while waiting for their money.
@f00l we’re “lucky” enough to have about 4 Costcos and 4 SAMs (one of them is the largest in the world) within easy drives. I could go on and on about the differences between the two.
Costco is better in just about every way except two increasingly aggravating things: (& of course the SAMs Scan & Go app)
They irritatingly intro products and get you hooked… only to drop them not long after. SAMs does this far less frequently so you can establish a staples routine.
They, even more so than SAMs, have continued to increase sizes to the level of epically obscene. Example: 72 pack of Kirkland AA batteries - I seem to recall 36 packs several years ago. (Thankful for Panasonic Eneloops!)
I regularly hear fellow shoppers saying the same two things.
@RedOak you can definitely get lost in that large store. Worst part for me is all the traffic around the parking lot.
If you haven’t tried it, I highly recommend going to Mo’Bettah across the street for dinner.
@jbartus I did, and hated it. The families with huge carts didn’t want to talk, they wanted me to ring quickly, so I didn’t really talk. That’s why I said I got a break.
People liked coming through my line because I was fast, not because I was a good conversationalist.
Most people at the store, you could tell they didn’t give a shit about whatever you were saying. Usually I’d ask them if their day was good, and if they found all the stuff the needed. If they wanted to talk beyond that, they would usually lead the way. Most people’s eyes would glaze over and they’d look at other things or the screen.
The grocery store was completely fine with that. They didn’t want me to get stuck in conversations that held up the line. They were happy that I was fast and the money in my drawer was correct.
@jbartus Not when I worked at a grocery store. We had our fasted people there. One was so quick, she could do 20 items in 15 seconds - could barely see her hands move!
I went in a few hours ago. Card reader said approved, please remove card. Then the cashier said it didn’t work. Did it again, yup, I was charged twice. The bitch we first encountered in customer service was a first degree black belt in worthless, angry bitches. I made them find someone else, because eff you if you think I’m walking away from $150.00 without a fight. Found the actual manager and got her info, if it doesn’t fall off tomorrow they’ll refund. But damn. Not cool.
@KittySprinkles This EXACT thing happened to me yesterday!
Fortunately, Chase Bank was cool to it and voided one of the transactions then and there while I was still standing at the check-out.
But that’s a half-hour of ridiculousness I’m never getting back.
I don’t believe that.
@PlacidPenguin that I went to Wal-Mart or that I didn’t want to murder anyone?
@RiotDemon
Yes.
@RiotDemon
Since there’s no guarantee you’ll come back from that, could I have your Meh account?
@PlacidPenguin I don’t think it’ll gain you any favors anywhere, haha
@RiotDemon >
That’s 2/3 of the population round here
What if you did die and this is heaven?
@miko1 then heaven sucks because I’m mopping my floors.
@RiotDemon
Don’t clean the floors. After a few years it gets no worse.
Congrats on failing to instigate violence at Walmart. Astonishing.
@f00l I tried that, but then I always had to wear shoes because the bottom of my feet were black. (The dust that results from grinding the metal my husband does is all over everything.)
@f00l unfortunately my guests would complain if I didn’t clean the floors.
@RiotDemon
Get different guests? The kind who will understand about the floors?
Or is the family so you gotta?
@f00l yep, family.
I don’t think my partner would care much.
@f00l
Something else which holds true: After a few years of not dusting, the dust gets no thicker.
hey @RiotDemon do you work here? what isle are the Christmas cookies at?
@communist you know… As I was standing in one of the aisles, looking at an item, a lady started going, “excuse me, excuse me ma’am”

Sympathies.
Must have been an absolute last resort, right? No Adidas socks for that last gift in stock anywhere else, right?
@RedOak I finally managed to get my brother to tell me that he needs some new dickies shorts. So I went to get him a pair to go with the rest of his gift. It was the last pair in his size. Lucky me.

We detest the soggy produce section at Walmart.
@RedOak I worked at a Wal-Mart a long time ago. @RiotDemon isn’t it scary, what we don’t see?
Kinda like at a restaurant - if the bathrooms the restaurant knows we can see aren’t clean, how can we expect the food prep areas & processes be any cleaner?
@RedOak
Do you live near a Walmart Neighborhoid Market?
(The little stores that are mostly groceries)
You can have your Walmart purchases shipped there. Usually almost no wait and fast CS. You don’t have to deal with people returning piles of clothes or toys.
@f00l nope, never heard of it. Ours are all mega boxes filled with clueless clowns.
@RiotDemon
Non-prescription meds.
Unless you go pay to shop big box, no one beats them

@jbartus I am in line at the grocery store right now. Bern waiting for 15 minutes in the “express” line
@conandlibrarian at least you have a phone to waste the time.
@conandlibrarian don’t you know? The Express line is where they put the cashiers who can’t keep up the pace on the normal lines!
@conandlibrarian oh how I hate long slow lines. All other things equal I will abandon a store that can’t get that part right.

@KittySprinkles This EXACT thing happened to me yesterday!

But that’s a half-hour of ridiculousness I’m never getting back.
@simssj They told me it was something happening with visa cards the past couple days. Gee, thanks for the heads up jerks.
I went to Wal Mart then I left after seeing this;
@unkabob Why? 3D movies are still popular enough.
@ELUNO … Just a little too much eye polution. I would never want my daughter to grow up to be like this chick.
@unkabob Eh, we all have our “fat pants/comfy dress” days. Wonder when the baby’s due?
