I want a monitor and a great deal!
2Every so often SWMBO or I find ourselves remoting into work from home. Our laptops have small monitors.
We would like suggestions for monitors we can link to our laptops and a great deal for the money.
Since demons have infested my bowels today, I find myself at home without the foresight of having brought home my laptop, so I will probably be online until my battery goes dead. (Yes, I can plug it in, reference to today’s poll)
Suggestions are welcome and I hope each and every one of you has a great day!

Gee, how about you give us some clues.
What type of interface to the monitor?
Max resolution supported by laptops?
Max size you feel would be viewable?
Min resolution you would find acceptable?
Price range?
Here is a monitor for $75

@outdoorslife That’s a refurbished monitor. As an IT professional I don’t recommend buying a refurb. Especially since you can get a new one for $10 more on Amazon or anyplace else.
I do agree that we need to know what interface your laptops have. HDMI? VGA? If you don’t know what it is, post a picture.
@Fuzzalini @outdoorslife yeah, I’m with you there. Refurbs can (often) mean dead pixels and that’s just part of the fine print list of acceptable defects…
Also what output do you have (HDMI?)
Windows/Linux/Mac?
you can find 24 inch monitors for about $100 or less at Best Buy and Office Depot (OD had one for $85 recently, but it’s now sold out-- watch their flyers for sales)
In my experience, I have been pretty happy with most of the monitors I have purchased over the years. I am not a gamer, so that makes a big impact in my needs/expectations.
@JnKL poor fucker. Feel better soon! You know Woot sells refurb monitors on the regular, so maybe when you’re in a better place to define what you’re looking for we can narrow it down. Stay hydrated!
I did no such thing.
@RiotDemon
/giphy YIKES!
Staples has several well rated AOC monitors on sale; 24" IPS for $90, 27" VA for $120, 27" IPS for $130.
Maybe the friends over at Meh will have a monitor for you tomorrow instead of the crap they have today.
I am on the hunt for a monitor myself, my LG finally bit it… so I am using a cheapo backup I had… and I can’t wrap my brain around the color/light difference (this ‘backup’ one is one of the tube lit lcds while the dead LG had the led back-light)…
So far all I’ve seen are not great deals… I have also discovered that the term “gaming” seems to add $100 to the price no matter the specs.
Will update if I find a steal.
@thismyusername @JnKL $75 for the aforementioned monitor from Staples today.
Get a vga to hdmi adapter and use your TV, voila!!
How much will you give me for ol’ Snappy?
@macromeh ONE MILLION LIKES!
@macromeh @PocketBrain
Where you live? I have an old 39" 1080p that works on VGA (HDMI is busted somehow) that you can have. Also to note as above, with the right cable/interface you can hook up to any modern TV.

If you need to tote that monitor to get a portable dual screen setup, check these out: https://www.officedepot.com/a/products/762189/AOC-16-LED-USB-Powered-Portable/
15.6", connects via usb3. Also available in 1929x1080.
But if the complaint is you want bigger and it will stay on the desk at home, get yourself something in the 22"+ range for the same money or so. Less if you go refurbished.
A used Monitor might be available for a good price, if you’re willing to adapt to older technology
@mehcuda67 Yeah… it will even come with the ghosts of the crew…
@chienfou @mehcuda67 I just spent two hours down a rabbit hole after looking up the USS Monitor. Did you know Peru had a monitor type ship?
@chienfou Hmmm. That sounds more like @RiotDemon’s department.
@chienfou @therealjrn Glad to instigate! I did similarly - maybe not quite two hours. Pretty fascinating/grim history of surviving a grueling battle, but just plain sinking in heavy seas. If you build a ship of mostly iron, and it’s deck is only 18" over the water line, and senior members of the crew think it’s not seaworthy, you should most definitely tow it out to sea in a major storm. The overlay of stupidity on ingenuity in the human race never ceases to amaze me.
Probably not quite what you’re looking for, but a couple of months ago I picked up a 43" 4K TV for $240 that’s now my primary monitor. With a couple of quirks it has worked out great, and it makes my 27" secondary monitor look positively dainty.

At 3840x2160 I love having really tall browser windows.
If you go down the TV-as-a-monitor rabbit hole, here’s a couple of mushrooms to nibble on:
