It was close between French and Italian. After an intense 10 seconds of internal debate i went with French because you can find good inexpensive Italian places. Ive never found French places like that. They’re always fancy.

I say meh. I am not a fancy person. I would rather stick with Taco Bell, Arby’s, Chick-fil-A, etc. over some place fancy. Not necessarily in that order.
We live in a pretty restaurant-rich environment, so any of the above plus Belgian, Indian, Greek, Turkish, Peruvian, Brazilian, Thai, Vietnamese, Korean and a bunch of others. Then there’s Fusion, which kind of scares me, because I’m wondering if they have a hydrogen bomb in the kitchen or something.
I’ve never eaten at a French restaurant so I would consider that fancy as in I would have to get dressed up to go eat. I prefer Asian cuisine and always choose that when given a choice. It is also what most meals I prepare at home lean toward until my family starts requesting that we take a break from Asian.
Since this is phrased as a question instead of a statement, I would probably think, “since it sounds like you aren’t up for it, we can just order some take-out”
“Fancy” to our family is any place we can still wear jeans, isn’t a chain & works with local farmers. The whole farm to table thing. Preferably one that serves local craft beers. I’ll take that over fancy-schmancy, over priced food with half ass service every time!
Honestly, I think, “oh great, now I have to iron my one nice shirt and the one nice pair of pants I have where the button will still reach the hole.” (and I hate, and am terrible at, ironing clothes)
But, since you were clearly asking what genre of restaurant I think of as “fancy”, it has to be French.
The fanciest restaurant I’ve ever been to, and the only one where a jacket was required, was a French restaurant.
Also, I’ve never been to a French restaurant that was not fancy enough to make one feel self conscious in jeans.
All of the other genres listed are ones that it’s pretty easy to find one where no one would look twice at you for dining in jeans and a t-shirt.
I consider it fancy if I can’t make it better at home, so sushi it is. Steak and taters is easy with sous vide and cast iron. Italian isn’t hard if you put in the time. Same with French food. As for tapas… Wtf is the deal there? In America it just means spending 3x the money for less food, most of which came from a freezer and went into a deep fryer
Going out for a “Fancy Dinner” to me usually means I have to make reservations. Haven’t done that lately, so I guess I’m not very a very fancy dinner person. I’m more of a pizza person.
