I left my old camera outside overnight a couple of months ago
31It was never the same. I’d be taking a photo and it would magically start taking video. The batteries lost power way too quickly. So, I got a new camera and retired the old one last week, finally frustrated beyond hope. The new one is fancier than the old one, more settings. (Both Panasonic Lumix cameras).
I snagged this photo this morning of Ike on one of the outdoor cathouses. I think I like this camera.

@lisaviolet @tinamarie1974 @unksol lol, nice.
@lisaviolet @unksol the things I learn here!
Sleepy kitten
Pretty lion.
Sounds moisture related. If there was dew that night it could have got into the internals and started causing some weirdness. Might be worth tossing the old one in some rice. Or disassembling. If your up to it. The few times I’ve fixed cameras they were a pain to put back together.
Great pic. Your new cam takes a fine photo. Decent color, great clarity and definition.
@ruouttaurmind Lumix DMC-LX10
I know it’s an older model, but I liked the size, the compactness of it, which is why I got it.
It’s not as easy as the older one, but look at this zoom - I didn’t check out the first picture for weeks, and it wasn’t of this house (it was a sunset picture), then when I did, I was really surprised at the sharpness, especially in low light.
Here’s the house at normal settings.
Pretty good for a point and shoot.
@lisaviolet We had a similar Lumix camera a few years ago. Really liked it - compact, easy to use, took good photos and videos. Then, after just a couple years, it suddenly stopped working. (Checked the battery and it was OK.) My wife used to carry it around in her purse, so who knows what happened. Too bad.
@macromeh I can control this one with my phone. I had it all set up, then trying to fix the numbering (one of my gripes about the Lumix cameras is the inability to change how the images are named: so far, they all save the same way, which could result in duplicates) I reset everything to factory.
I want to get a picture of the moon. So today I will connect to my phone again. lol And take a photo of the moon, putting the camera on a tripod.
And I will bring the camera into the house when I’m done.
BTW, I found a way to fix the numbering by following the steps someone shared online. Trick the camera into thinking it needs set up the next folder. Using a freshly formatted card, take a photo. Remove the card, put it in the computer, rename the image. Instead of the last three numbers being 001, change them to 999.
Reinsert the card. Take a photo. The camera will go to the next folder (101 up to 999). Since I was at folder 107 on my last camera, I did this until the folder was 108. Now, no duplicates.
Very cool picture - I thought he was a wildcat just seeing the little image before I opened your thread!
Not that it’s any use to you now, but when I take nighttime (or cold weather) pics, I put the camera in a large ziplock back before bringing it back inside and let it temp stabilize. Voila - any moisture condenses on the outside of the bag, not the camera.
@bigcurmudgeon that is clever
@bigcurmudgeon I just forgot it was out there. We go outside in the evening to watch the stars/satellites in our gravity chairs and I left it in the cup holder.
But that’s a good idea. If I ever do this again, I’ll remember your trick.
I left a camera out overnight once to see what was scrambling around under the deck at night. A rabbit chewed on my power cord!
@medz I was having trouble with weird dirt on my top pool step each night so I bought a ‘game camera’ with IR. Turns out the neighbor’s german shepard was coming by in the middle of the night, standing on the step and drinking from the pool. The crap stuck to his feet was what I was finding in the morning.
I have since ‘caught’ a giant ground hog, armadillos and raccoons on the camera at other locations in the yard. $45 well spent…
“Hey barkeep! Where’s that milk?”
