No two dishes come out the same. Mostly because I want to try something new. Then there is the missing ingredient and substitution experiments. But it is always taste good (at least to me).
Here is the greatest thing I ever cooked: You take a couple of pounds of fresh swordfish, cube it and marinate it (Penzy’s Greek Seasoning a little mild vinegar (or water) a little lemon juice and a decent amount of olive oil) in the fridge overnight. Skewer with chunks of Onion and Green Pepper. Cook over a hot fire (pref lump charcoal). Duration is based on the size of your fish cubes but is not long. 5-10 is usually more than enough. Allow searing but keep them moving enough to keep the veggies from burning to much. It doesn’t need much of a side. Some rice, french fries, or pita bread will do.
You can substitute Shark or even Salmon. In a pinch you can use State Fair Spiedie Sauce as marinade.
My wife & I compliment each other quite nicely. I’m the cook & she’s the baker. In a pinch, we can get into each other’s realm. Check out the pics below…
@BethanyAnne I probably should’ve labeled the dishes. Top to bottom: BBQ Shrimp & Grits, The BIG Salad, BBQ Italian Beef Sandwich, Blackberry Rhubarb Pie.
My favorite recipe site is Budget Bytes. I cook several things from Beth’s recipes. Her Italian Wonderpot recipes are great, as is the sun dried tomato pasta. My favorite tho, is the Vegan Winter Lentil Stew. https://www.budgetbytes.com/vegan-winter-lentil-stew/ It’s soo good. A very different flavor profile, and cheap and easy. I will probably be making some of her cucumber salad next week.
I grill all year round but mostly in the summer. My house is small so I try not to heat it up by cooking Especially cuz my husband works in a 100* warehouse. I also use pressure cooker-not the goofy insta post-game crock pot. I make what I call “gravy dinners” during winter. I get alot of requests for my Fiesta chicken. Crock pot, can black bean, can corn, 3 cans petite diced tomatoes 2lbs chicken tenders, McCormick Fiesta Chicken Flavor pack. I add alot of other seasoning but to each his own. Cook on low about 3.5hrs. Take chicken out. Shredded it put it back. Eat it with a fork, as nachos, as a dip, on a salad, in tacor shell or flour/corn tortilla. VERY VERSATILE!!! My friends, neighbors, parents, daughter & her friends ask me to make it every other week! Can be eaten over rice also!
I’m both. I look for new recipes because I’ve been cooking the same old stuff for 50 years. On the other hand, so many of the recipes I look at are really close to the stuff I’ve been cooking for 50 years.
I do both to. I’ll try new things when I have time and when I’m in a rush I cook my tried and true favorites but sometimes a also experiment with new stuff too if I don’t like what’s in it. I made a pasta salad last weekend that was really good with just the dressing and then threw in what I wanted for vegetables and such.
When you grow up in a restaurant, cooking is second nature. Quick dinner: Saute 1/2 an onion in olive oil, add a couple of crushed garlic cloves, a few fresh basil leaves. Cook a chicken breast (cut in half lengthwise and flattened, salt and pepper to taste) in mixture until browned well on both sides. Serve over your favorite pasta with a salad on the side & Pinot Grigio.
I used to cook more than I do now as DHS takes a dim view of not cooking meals for your child. My kid came to me with cooking skills and liked to cook. I did not like the amount of cayenne pepper she’d put on things though. This kid also ate jalapeno peppers like they were candy and then drank the juice. To me black pepper is too hot. As a result we had to compromise. Also she’d cook with no recipes.
Anyway here is the recipe for tarantulas. Bear in mind that Angeline Jolie and her son ordered and ate tarantula trying out that “speciality” when visiting his country. In case you’d like to try this at home, here is the recipe my kid gave me:
Catch tarantulas. The grownup takes the poison thing out. The kids pull off all the hair. Cut it into small pieces and stir fry. Then put it in with the water rice (rice diluted with water as there wasn’t enough to go around otherwise).
I asked her if she wanted tarantulas for dinner. She said, “Spider no good. In this country we have chicken”. I had wondered how I’d explain to a pet store that I wanted their biggest, juiciest tarantula and no tarantula food. Of course those spiders in the store are babies and those in the wild where she lived the adults had bodies that were around 8" in diameter. She also said that poor people in her country were smart because they figured out how to trick rich people from other countries into eating food that only the poor would eat and only because they had to.
What is this “cook” you speak of?
@heartny I reheat fast food in the microwave after I get home, does that count?
@FightingMongoos I’d say it counts. It involves food. It involves getting it hot. It is done by you. Ergo you are cooking.
A lot of pasta, for some reason.
@awk
Ditto
@awk
My brother text me a pic yesterday of the pasta he stole from me that I left at my moms from pasta drop. What at turd.
Well cooking is better than the alternative of starving… it has that going for it anyway.
Kind of both on occasion. Work leaves no time on weekdays but weekends we’ll often try out a new recipe.
I mostly cook the same things but occasionally step out of my comfort zone to try something new.
No two dishes come out the same. Mostly because I want to try something new. Then there is the missing ingredient and substitution experiments. But it is always taste good (at least to me).
The poll is fishing for recipes, but no one seems to be obliging.
I present to you not a recipe, but a concept. An experiment, if you will.
Make the crumbly, non-patty indoor version of this:
/youtube guga patty melt
Mix it with some ziti from Pastadrop.
Congratulations, you have made patty melt Mac n Cheese. Let me know if it’s any good.

I cook daily, because my wife’s cooking skills are limited.

@tohar1 That beef bread thing looks so delicious.

@BethanyAnne That looks good- I need to bookmark it.
I could probably rave about her site for paragraphs. She’s the only author besides Alton Brown where I’ve made more than one thing from her cookbook.
My sister bought me an Instant Pot and I have only cooked two things in it. I should really experiment.
@Fuzzalini Me too- rice and hard boiled eggs. Wow, I’m boring.
I heat. Mostly Caribbean meat patties. Some restaurant leftovers too.

Tried to say not the goofy insta pot, not post game! I HATE AUTOCORRECT!!

Rarely cook, but when I do it’s usually something super simple like this:
Slice up the kielbasa, spread flat on non-stick cookie sheet, cover with sweet and sour sauce. Bake at 350° for about 25-30 minutes.
You can get both items for about $6 total at Walmart or Target. Minimal cleanup too.
@lordbowen Mmm, we do that with BBQ sauce and sausage.
