How to say hi to a cat
20Slow blink

I honestly thought this was just common knowledge… and idk why they involved owners unless a control. We don’t need to build rapport with a cat who trusts us. They usually won’t leave us alone/get off us.
But maybe for those visiting and want to pet kitty. Or getting a new one. Obviously if you don’t know the cat, locking eyes with it makes you a threat. That’s how they hunt. Being calm and unconcerned makes you not.

My wife has cat allergies. If we visit anyone with a cat it will inevitably climb up on her lap, and try to get all over her. Guess she needs to start staring them down in the future.
@chienfou lol that might work. Mine are not used to visitors so they are on the skittish side if not already under the couch.
I just say Hello. I talk to cats like they are my friends and ignore the fact that they want to kill all humans.
@yakkoTDI
But they want to be fed by us and heartlessly toy with us before they kill us
While visiting my wife’s aunt once her cat sat on the arm of the sofa next to me and started to meow at me. Being a friendly guy… I meowed back. He got louder, I got louder. After a few rounds he shot straight up in the air, hissed and started swinging his paws with all the claws out, then vanished out of the room. He looked like a little Tasmanian Devil from looney tunes… Never did figure out what I said to piss him off!
@chienfou Cats like to have the last word.
@chienfou Always reply to cats in Human, not Feline. It’s not so much what you said, but that you got the accent wrong. When the cat tried to correct you, you repeated the same thing in a louder voice, just like Americans do in foreign countries. Your cat’s reaction was very much like what I saw from a French waiter when yelled at (in very bad French) by a table of tourists. Minus the claws.
I’ve always been told to ignore them. I have mild allergies to them, and when visiting friends’ house guess who is the favorite guest?!?
Either they know, or there is something to that strategy.
@KNmeh7 You will not be perceived as a threat if you ignore them.
I had no idea. I finally know how to make friends with my best friend’s evil cat now
Okay, so @unksol, @Kidsandliz, @lisaviolet and any other cat lovers out there - I got a cat, finally, almost a month ago. I’ve been waiting to post about it; just haven’t been in the mood yet. BUT in the meantime I have a question - this adorable 3-year-old mutt kitty from the Humane Society has got the worst farts! I haven’t taken him for his first vet check-up yet - he was super shy when I got him and I’ve been waiting till he feels really secure, which does seem to be happening. It might be food - I might try a limited ingredient diet - but have you ever dealt with this?!
@Kyeh It’s the food, would be my guess. Look for a low grain food to start with.
And congratulations!
@Kyeh @lisaviolet parasites might also contribute to that but I’d agree a limited ingredient diet might help you identify what ingredient disagrees with him. Also see if you can catch a fresh poop and take that to the vet for a parasite check even if you don’t take him.
Also you might want to call the Humane Society and tell them the problem your cat came with, do they have any suggestions.
@Kidsandliz @lisaviolet Thanks! I do need to get him in to the vet for a check-up, but I’ll give the Humane Society a call too; that’s a good idea. (My friend and I were joking that maybe that’s why he ended up there.)
