2-3 movies in a commercial theater per week with my husband, sometimes many more (especially towards the end of the year). He’ll also watch at least one new release screener every day in the home theater.
@brhfl That kind of theater experience would honestly help me to get out to the movies more than twice a year. I’m a grown up now, I’m okay with paying $11 for a first release film. But another $12 for gas station caliber food and drinks? Why bother.
There’s fuckall else to do around here, especially if you’re not a drinker or into sports or, you know, the outdoors and physical activity in general, so, a lot. Luckily ticket prices are on the cheap end of the spectrum 'round these parts.
The theater in my town is terrible, not cheap (and cash only, I mean really?). Sometimes you can hear the movie that is playing in the next room. My friend has a very good sound system and a large 4k TV . No idea why I go to the theater at all, but I only go once or twice a year.
I have a love/hate relationship with attending movies.
There was an episode of “Seinfeld” where George expressed the opinion that if he was watching a movie at Jerry’s house he was “doing something”, but if he was watching the same movie at his house he “wasn’t doing anything”. I have that same sort of philosophy about going to the movies, and with that same sort of mindset, I love going to the movies.
But there is a lot about it that drives me crazy:
jerks talking during the whole movie: “Which one of these guys was Morgan Stanley again? What do you mean it is a company, not a guy?”
idiots answering their phone and conversing at normal conversational volumes
parents who bring their baby to “Deadpool” and then make no effort whatsoever to keep it from crying
the woman behind me who props her shoeless feet up on seat next to me.
People pretty much suck these days. Then a hurricane will hit somewhere and we’ll all come together, have a telethon, fund raising concert, etc.
Then we go back to sucking again.
Accidentally clicked the movie tab on iTunes the other day, and didn’t recognize a single movie. Not one. So at this point, I can’t even watch last year’s Oscar winner, because I have to do the math in my head, and if I’m going to invest two hours of my life, shouldn’t I be re-watching Lawrence of Arabia or Citizen Kane or something?
@DrWorm time machines aren’t real! Oh, you were just being sarcastic weren’t you. Hmm, maybe that was used in my previous comment somewhere also to describe a long boring movie you hated being slightly longer than “the real exact running time of the movie.” Or I like to get there early, grab a beer, fluff my travel pillow & tell people like you too shhhhh!
I go to movies by myself mostly. I’ll wake up on my day off, in the middle of the week, and decide to go to a 10 or 11am showing. That way there’s hardly anyone there to bother me during the movie. I don’t have any friends that would/can go that early, so whatever, by myself it is. It’s only $6 that way, and I’ll usually bring a snack and a water in my hoodie pockets so I don’t have to pay ridiculous prices for snacks.
@RiotDemon hey you know what, my best friend does this & he has tons of friends & family & people he could go with. He likes it this way. So I say, whatever makes you happy, stick with that. And nobody steals all your popcorn. Happy movie watching!
@RiotDemon When I was single I used to go straight to the theater after work to get the matinee price. Then I would have dinner at the food court. I miss movies, I almost never go now.
@RiotDemon that… actually sounds good. I don’t like the crowds, and during the school year I doubt I’ll be dealing with subpar high schoolers as staff. Will have to give it a try.
@simplersimon seriously it’s nice. Some people are just so rude at the movies nowadays. I saw Life of Pets during the day on a weekend so I could go with someone, and I assumed there would be a lot of annoying kids. Well, the kids didn’t bother me, it was the adult that kept using their phone. Those stupid things are bright.
Also, when I go during the week, early showings, I can usually sit where I want, and have no one in front of me. So even if people were using their phone, I wouldn’t know, unless they were talking on it.
I might go twice a month, but several of those are to art-house flicks. I’m lucky enough to have an indie theater about 10 minutes from my house. Their tax-deductible membership allows me to see movies at $6 each. My wife goes far more than I do, but that option puts us in double-digits easily.
I generally don’t want to bother with the crowds, sticky floors, and staff that remind me I an aging, and have a good enough system at home to enjoy most movies enough there. If I do hit a theater, it’s usually for opening night or some other event showing. Last visit was a theater show the complete, extended version Lord of the Rings trilogy for the Sunday after Christmas.
I’m probably underestimating, but I’ve gone years without seeing any movies in a theatre. It seems like I’ve seen a lot this year, even though it’s only been three:
The Force Awakens
Ghostbusters
Star Trek: Beyond
And I’m totally going to see Rogue One, though that might wait until early 2017. I hate crowds.
@sanspoint Oh, I also went to a Neil Young double-feature earlier this year. They showed his abysmal “comedy” Human Highway, and the incredible concert movie Rust Never Sleeps. Worth it.
It really depends on if I’ve gone to the AMC Oscar movie event or not- if I go to that, I see about half the Best Picture nominees in one day (which is also generally more movies than I see in a theater in a year).
I have diamond status on Regal Cinemas rewards program. That’s over 20 visits per year. I have a problem.
we watch the majority of our movies at the 3.00 theater

@MrsPavlov
Y’all must see many unexpected gems, and many many more you’d like to erase from your brains forever?
I’m just guessing. What is the ratio between films that are either: “good”, “indifferent”, “terrible”, when you kinda see everything?
@f00l Let’s wait until the old man gets back next week and let him answer. I think you’ll enjoy his take on that question.
Don’t care for most movies these days, really hate the theatre experience. But Alamo has beer, so I end up there… quarterly?
@brhfl That kind of theater experience would honestly help me to get out to the movies more than twice a year. I’m a grown up now, I’m okay with paying $11 for a first release film. But another $12 for gas station caliber food and drinks? Why bother.
I’d say I see at least 20 a year in the theater. I have a second job where we go to the movies a lot.
There’s fuckall else to do around here, especially if you’re not a drinker or into sports or, you know, the outdoors and physical activity in general, so, a lot. Luckily ticket prices are on the cheap end of the spectrum 'round these parts.
@nogoodwithnames Its that or wandering around the neighboring town’s walmart.
@JoetatoChip Ha, I had just gotten home when I typed my first comment, after seeing a movie and then stopping by Walmart to buy a shower curtain.

During college, I saw a movie every week of the year. $5 Movie night as opposed to the $14 or whatever.
@connorbush
$5? It was Free Movie Night for us. One of those was also the only time I have ever gone to a movie theater.
@connorbush Yeah our college setup $.50 movie nights. And I graduated in 2012.
@Rakaim I guess it is yet another case of Southern California cost of living?
@DVDBZN
@stykhead
You called?

Foster patent for a couple of years, then adopted two little girls. Last movie in a theater was the first Bourne.
Here’s my problem:

@MehnofLaMehncha
Streaming is good.
Orpheus (Jean Cocteau, 1950)
Black Orpheus (Marcel Camus, 1959)
make a great back to back, if you’re in an art-house mood.
Zero movies in the theater and home. I think I’m movied-out from being a projectionist for many years at college.
How many times have you walked out of a movie theater and badly wished you could get that two hours & $20 back? Netflix anyone?
@bellaopera I see where Netflix helps with the $20, but how exactly does it help with the two hours? Is there a new time machine plan?

@simplersimon
Did they do the extended version of ROTK? I thought that one had never been in theaters.
My Precious?
@f00l yep, they had them all. I had thought the same, but was happily wrong.
@simplersimon
Then I will keep an eye for the Next Showing. Good to know.

During a long period of funemployment, I managed to see 100 movies at a single theater on an annual all-you-can-watch pass.
In previous years, about 4 or 5. This year, we’ve gone to about 6. That’s different movies. Some of those I saw 3-4 times.
We used to try to see 1-2 movies a month in theater, but this year so far has been waylaid. Haven’t even made it to the drive-in across town. Radda.
