I am selective. I only like certain types. Big Mead fan so i always go to that section first. if i am feeling i want something different i like Moscato d’Asti of a few table wines from a few certain wineries.

Local wines that I can taste first before purchase. I appreciate a long finish without a strong alcohol “vapor” when swallowing. Complex flavor notes with floral, or earthy notes depending on the type of wine.
I generally like an old vine Zinfandel with a charcuterie of olives, cheeses and smoked or cured meat.
“What’s the driest red you have?” Unless I find something I already know I like. Also, it’s pretty rare that I’ll drink wine because I’d almost always rather have a cocktail or a beer.
I have a couple favorites and I stick to those.

What my local wine merchant recommends. He’s a nice guy who likes grower champagne and northern Italy.
Also love Old World rieslings and Loire Valley wines. Sicily was definitely underrated for a while.
Personally, since I seldom drink wine, I’m usually buying whatever’s cheap that seems to fit the requirements for the food recipe that needs some.

They will generally let you taste their wines, frequently for free, especially if you make a purchase.

Always the label for a starting point but I do read the back to know what I’m dealing with and I ask people.
