How about those Buckeyes?
6I don’t see much trash talking here on college sports.
Pro sports don’t get me going like the ol’ gipper does.
So when I yell OH
you respond with…
I hope the CFP expands to 8 teams, but for now I’m just glad to see the Buckeyes in the running for the National Championship.
Go Bucks!

IO!
Go Bucks!
Roy Orbison singing for the lonely!
Rooting for the UW Huskies!
We’re playing Alabama in the Peach bowl.
Might be a tough game…
Go Huskies!
Hope to play the Buckeyes in the Championship Game!
I heard that that one team did that thing with the sports item, and they ended up winning with a certain amount of point earning actions, with some of the actions being with slightly more than other actions.
@PlacidPenguin
Ever hear Patton Oswalt talking about auditioning for Big Fan? Exactly what he sounded like.
What is a buckeye anyway?
@RiotDemon
@RiotDemon - a peanut butter flavored ball dipped in chocolate.
@Pavlov now I’m hungry!
@Pavlov so the team is named after a candy?
@PlacidPenguin what makes it buckeye?
/google what is a buckeye
What is a Buckeye?
http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/trads/buckeye.html
@RiotDemon nope - they’re named after a nut - the candy looks like the nut IIRC. Cracker Barrel sells the candy everyday at most all locations. Not as good as my great aunt used to make, but passable.
@RiotDemon it’s a useless nut that is really good at football
@RiotDemon If you what horse chestnuts are, you know what buckeyes are.
@cranky1950 I’m assuming you mean that a horse chestnut is an actual nut. I owned a horse, and what we called a chestnut was the little remnant of skin on the inside of the leg that was thought to be a leftover from when horses had split toed hooves.
I actually didn’t know there was a nut called this.
@Pavlov I work close to a cracker barrel, I’ll have to see if they carry it. It looks tasty.
@RiotDemonhttp://www.gardenguides.com/93799-horse-chestnut-tree-identification.html
@RiotDemon They are pretty easy to make - kind of pricey at the Barrel, but at least you can try a couple and know if you like them! Maybe ask them for a free sample to see if you like them, make a funny face and tell them “nah” while the creamy peanut butter and chocolate goodness invades your senses. Then go make them at home.
@Pavlov I found a ridiculously easy recipe. I can’t imagine that anyone would hate them if they like Reese’s. I might give them a try soon.

@RiotDemon the buckeye tree is the state tree of OH-IO, i think.
it grows a nut cultivated to look like the candy named after it apparently. that’s crazy according to tracy jordan.
according to my current ‘home state companions’ it is a “worthless, poisonous nut”.
if the earlier post of chestnuts and buckeyes being = is true, then there goes the farm.
brutus buckeye, the mascot of The ohio state university, recently had a birthday, i think it was the 50th, (s)he has had many looks over the years.
@Yoda_Daenerys
Gotta love college sports, if only for the whole buckeye hoosier hokie wahoo nittany lion fighting illini thing
The most cherished, celebrated, time-honored rivalry is between a goat and a mule.
GO SPORTS! MOVE THE THING TO THE OTHER THING!
@jbartus
You may find that funny, but that’s seriously how my brain interprets sports.
Which is sightly frustrating since the following is true:
@PlacidPenguin I’M SUPER WORKED UP BECAUSE MY TEAM DID STUFF!
That image frustrates me too since it ignores a bunch of other professional sports teams NY has while also highlighting the disparity between NY and other less fortunate markets that ultimately perpetuates the economic disparity between NY and those other markets. Of course LA is nearly as bad.
@jbartus
Never really followed sports. The only ones I’ve ever paid any decent attention to are Drone Racing and Competitive Eating.
My mind goes fuzzy when trying to process sports. I’ve had people bring me to sports places, and I had no clue what was happening.
@jbartus
Re greater NYC
Lots of people + lots of $$$$ + major locus of media industry = a lot of sports and sports dominance.
But major pro sports had gotten so damned expensive and the NFL HQ has gotten so full of itself. Wonder if/when the rank and file fans will stop caring so much.
@f00l they already have in many cases. As for the media locus and money thing the fact that they’re there makes it a self-perpetuating situation, those dollars aren’t being shared around to other markets. I’d like to see something lime a minimum requirement of 200 mile spacing between team (same sport) locations to spread the wealth a bit.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@PlacidPenguin Much easier to ‘process’ sports if you participated as a kid. You do understand the concepts of ‘game’ and ‘winner’, right?
@compunaut
The concepts? Sure.
Go Buckeyes!
No respect for the Big Ten Champions… We Are!!!
@jml326 Well don’t lose to Pitt 42-39 and Michigan 49-10.
@Neghtasro @jml326 Despite the Pitt and Michigan losses, PSU both won the Big Ten and beat Ohio State head-to-head. It is understandable that PSU was left out of the playoff, but being replaced by OSU was the odd thing. It is the first time one of the big 4 champions was left out of the playoff due to being supplanted by a team in its own conference (not even factoring in the fact that the Lions beat the Buckeyes).
@DrWorm Compare the number of top ten teams each of these teams beat this year to reveal the answer
@Neghtasro ohio lost to an unranked psu and didnt fall from glory. There still is some bias in the ncaa world and in the cfp for ohio and other teams. Dont tell me this isnt part a money grab by the ncaa and cfp.
Yay, gooooo Horssssse Chesssnuttttttttasssssssssss
@cranky1950http://www.gardenguides.com/93799-horse-chestnut-tree-identification.html
@cranky1950 You’re cranky.
GO BUCKS! O-H
@lajmd I-O!!!
Over rated and getting blown by espn for money. O$u and Michigan always get the special treatment because the Chicago big ten office and the espn office are filled with their left over alums
@msujp sparty? sorry about your season
Not into any of the high-ranked teams.
My brother did not really love going to see a few games at Ohio State as a guest and finding out it was not unusual for sober, polite, friendly fans of the visiting teams to get spit on by drunk Ohio State fans.
Ohio State does have a great stadium.
@f00l your honor, i object! hear say!
i never spit on any opposing fans at the games i attended.
now p’ing on them is another story
@Yoda_Daenerys
Actually, he witnessed that also at least once.
Not amused.
As a Temple fan, I am eternally grateful to tOSU for keeping Penn State out of the playoffs, because Penn State fans are INSUFFERABLE about stuff like that.
I typically keep my opinions regarding this type of thing to myself, but since you specifically asked: BUCKEYES SUCK!
Their fans are the worst. Every fan-base has a few bad apples, but seemingly every Buckeye fan is a miserable jerk. And while most sports fans reserve their wrath for opponent/rival’s regalia, Buckeye fans are just obnoxious to everyone. Twice they have had bowl games in my city and were rude and insulting to everyone they encountered (as were the players and some coaches). If I were to post stories about the “nicest” OSU fans, they would come out sounding so over-the-top nasty, you would think I was making things up. Saying “Hello, how are you?” to a Buckeye fans gets a reply of “Is everybody in your $4!77y town a blanekty-blank piece of blank?” Don’t even think about talking to the male fans.
@DrWorm what’s your sample size and mean deviation?
i’ll take Dr in your UN loosely
butt, i am certain no youngters from your alma mater drink unresponsibly and act like buttheads, am i right?
@Yoda_Daenerys
I have heard stories from many sources - alumni from various schools unaware that I had heard similar from others - stating that Ohio State fans are in a league of their own.
My nephew, who chose not to apply to Ohio State, spent much of his teenage years going to games at all the schools in driving range, a number of these were Buckeye games. Those visits set his mind.
@f00l ok, i give, all ohio state fans are idiots and should be in jail.
my brilliant children get especially upset with me when i categorize people and their behaviors based on the group they belong to.
in this case i will make an exception, we all suck.
@Yoda_Daenerys
Didn’t say or imply that any of that.
Just wouldn’t mind if the tone changed at bit among the fans. A little more polite or welcoming perhaps. Not any outsider’s choice tho. Up to the alums and students.
If the rep is undeserved, my apologies. If the rep is deserved, you can’t blame people for noticing.
No-one thinks it’s “everyone” or it’s “all evil” or whatever other over-generalization. People have a right to think they don’t enjoy the overall atmosphere much if it’s consistently unpleasant. And to notice the diff with other places.
PS since you’re in the CFP, enjoy it.
@f00l hmmm, cfp?
@f00l i forget, have you been there, or this is all feedback from others? it’s all good tho, i don’t think i can change 1000000 OSU fans now or in the future.
from my own point of view, i’ve never pee’d in a UofM fan’s beer cup or sucker punched them,
/giphy unless they deserved it
but i’ve never been rude to an opponent’s fans, i’ve been to many other big ten schools football stadiums, i’ve never seen a difference between buckeye fans and others, butt this could all be my HTB.
i am taking this all as a personal attack. these are my peeps.
there is a chance is not meant to be that.
@Yoda_Daenerys
No. not personal. Kinda doubt you are one of the ones my brother or nephew wished they were not near.
Your school has that rep, deserved for undeserved. Something to be aware of. I don’t think you or any one person can change the culture, either.
Apologies if I came off as a righteous ass. Unintentional.
if my 2.5 years living in Columbus did ANYTHING, it strengthened my hatred for OSU fans.
ALL you really need to know about them is that they INSIST on emphasizing the word “the” at the beginning of “the ohio state university”, as in “THE Ohio State University”, or decal I saw in the back window of someone’s Pickup the other day(3 panel, with the opening slider in the center) Left panel FILLED with “THE”, Right panel just said “Ohio State”. No mention of “university”
if you think i’m joking, they now sell a whole line of merchandise with THE in big letters, and a little buckeye logo…
Like This:https://encrypted-tbn1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcT0ctwgIuS9m89dF5droMEtPwcTIZv79vfJl5cIEWU9h6Jq4Wkn6w
and This:
fucking assholes…
every. time. i hear that shit, it makes me want to go back in time and buy a t-shirt I saw in Athens, OH(home of Ohio university) years ago: OHIO, THE State University.(this was back when the 2 schools were having a drawn out legal battle over use of the Word “OHIO”, and the stylized “O” they had both been using for years in their respective Colors.)
and quite frankly, every time i hear someone shout out O-H!, my kneejerk response is FUCK YOU!
but i digress…
My brother travels constantly - he and/or his family love going to college games in various places even if they have no connection to the colleges on the field.
After they moved to Cinn, the family tried Ohio State games a few times. They weren’t rooting for the other team, they just wanted a great football afternoon.
After a few visits to Buckeyes football, the family decided not to go to those games anymore unless Texas or another long-time fav team was on the visiting side. One of his kids chose not to apply Ohio State based on how he’d seen the fans behave.
@f00l does your brohter tell you how great cinci is? i have family there that sing that song.
i come from a family of many OSU grads and we’re pretty alright.
most of the time at least…
@Yoda_Daenerys
Cinnci v good. Was there for a weekend - what - 2 years ago autumn I think?
Ate chili. Liked it fine.
Meh. I’m paying attention to the other side of the bracket.
Only talk to me after the team has won their football conference championship.
The college football ‘playoff’ isn’t really about the best teams being selected - it’s about selecting the teams that will generate the most revenue from the televised games.
The existing focus on $$$ (and ‘win at all costs’ attitude) is the reason I no longer watch football.
@compunaut what is the rule that got Penn State into the Big10 game instead of the Bucks?
@compunaut
I loved it when TCU messed up the NCAA BCS by being so damned good. Love TCU. And purple. And fuck the NCAA and the way they favor the power schools, including Texas.
Of course the power schools have the $ to do what they want.
@Yoda_Daenerys big ten has a rule about head to head. Psu beat osu. There is no other tie breaker in place for now. But i net the big tem is rewriting the rules as we speak. Can’t let the sweatheart team of THE osu not be #1.
@jml326 but didn’t mi beat psu h2h and osu beat mi h2h and psu beat osu h2h, or something like that? in the end i thought they may also have a tie breaker like, if you went last then it’s the other team’s turn.
Meh.be i’m wrong
@Yoda_Daenerys MI did beat PSU, but had 2 conference losses. PSU & OSU had identical conference records but PSU won H2H. Therefore PSU won Big Ten (East) & played (and won) Big Ten championship.
I could live with OSU supplanting another conference champion (perhaps UW & their pathetic non-conference schedule) but not their own division & conference champion.
Might as well have the AP poll or writers decide the champion again & skip the playoff games. Wait, I forgot: those games are worth $500M
@compunaut yea, and osu does have, like approaching, 1M graduates of which, some must have some serious bank.
I think I’m going to be sick.
@Barney
@f00l takes responsi-
Bility for @Barney be-
Ing sick. What is wrong?
@f00l OSU
@Barney I agree. Just wrong wronger WRONGEST
@Barney
@f00l has great sympa-
Thy for @barney feeling ill
Re football playoffs.
@Barney do scarlet and gray = purple?
@compunaut written off
@Yoda_Daenerys Not in a million years.
@Barney #4 University of Washington Huskies wear Gold & Purple…
@daveinwarsh Go Dawgs!
Ok we haven’t been so great recently at football, but fuck the other schools because we’re rich and we’ll have $ when everyone else including Ha-vad is flat broke.
@f00l Whoa there, cowboy. According to Bloomberg, Harvard has almost $36B endowment, while UT just surpassed Yale ($23.9B) with $25.4B.
Of course, on a per-student basis, UT is far down on the list.
@compunaut
I know. But there are suspected to be huge unsurveyed reserves reachable by the latest tech, assuming W Tx doesn’t mind more fracking. So far most of W Tx seems not to object to fracking.
The current endowment estimates only include proven reserves, I think.
Besides, Boston/Cambridge has winter.
Joking aside, I understand that schools like Harvard/Yale/Princeton/MIT and schools like Texas/Michigan/Berkeley and similar serve differing communities and offer different resources.
@f00l
I went to West Point, the USMA, back when bowl bids were common and we beat Navy every other year.
Being up north and having around 4500 students, the Ivies were our size and nearby, so we’d play Harvard and Yale off and on.
Still remember being ahead of Yale in the fourth quarter, playing in New Haven, and their student body started chanting:
That’s alright
That okay
You’re going to work for us someday.
So, yeah, fuck every one of them.
Re: 8 teams
If the NBA/NFL/MLB followed the ratios of NCAAF, they would play a 3 game season and only 1 team would make the playoffs.
@MehnofLaMehncha If the NCAAF followed the NBA/NFL/NHL/MLB their players would actually get paid, the teams would be split into leagues with relegation, and players could play more than 4 years.
For football and especially for Buckeye fans:
Todays’s Kindle Daily Deal has a list of motivational books at sale prices, and they lead off with this one:
Above the Line: Lessons in Leadership and Life from a Championship Season

by Urban Meyer (Author), Wayne Coffey (Contributor)
Today, the Kindle Edition is $3.99.
Amazon doesn’t allow sites like camelx3 to scrape Amazon for Kindle price tracking. However, I believe Amazon’s usual Kindle price for this book is close to Barnes and Noble’s e-book price, which is $13.99, so this appears to be a pretty good discount.
This price will be good until midnight Pacific Time.
