How about another Silicone Ice Ball Deal Again
1I bought a set of Silicone Ice Molds the last time they were offered and I love them. They’re easy to use, don’t leak and I’m just getting into putting fruit in the bottom half and filling the rest with water. Coconut water works great too. Strawberry Lemonade is great that way. These molds are a lot of fun and I’ve had several people ask where they could get them at the price I paid. Come on Meh, they sold out. Time for another round.

@DaveInSoCal These are close but the Meh deal of 8 for $8 was a steal. I’m impressed how easy and well they work. I just have to watch when my son comes to visit since they’re small enough to “accidentally” mix in with his other stuff. I don’t want to have to frisk him before he leaves. I will but I don’t want to.
I love them. I’ve been using them for when I need an ice bath for things, like hard-boiled eggs. One or two of those orbs are perfect.
I wonder how this would work for freezing individual portions of stock…
@conandlibrarian Interesting thought. I thought the coconut water was a novel idea but stock for soup, that might be a really good idea.
@bsci87 for stock I like ziplocs laid flat as it stores easy in freezers.
@CaptAmehrican Good thinking. I normally don’t make soup from scratch but I do make gravy that way. I never thought of that for before Thanksgiving or Christmas. Thanks for the idea.
@conandlibrarian i freeze stock in snapware containers, then take it out and put it in a vacuum sealed bag, extra steps but it “freeze” up the snapware.
i’ve taken to just throwing scraps from salad trimmings (carrots, celery, peppers, onion skins, etc.) into a gallon freezer bag until it’s about full and then simmer for a couple hours - makes super tasty vege stock, and it’s made from garbage - what a deal!
@Yoda_Daenerys I like that idea!
Sold out… as in they don’t have any more. o___O
It’s not like Meh buys this stuff from the manufacturers, it’s all closeouts and the like (well they probably do with overstock but that’s another matter) – I’m sure they’re aware of the fact that they sold out and keeping an eye out for more but it’s not like they’re avoiding selling them out of spite or something.
@jbartus OK but I can’t complain about something I can’t do anything about? This is America!!
How about guitars? , good guitars!
How about kites? , good kites!
@ELUNO Wouldn’t a frozen kite be heavy and hard to fly? I suppose if you got a good running start you could get it going but with my luck it would take a nose dive into the ground and break.
@bsci87 You are lucky then. With my head it would take a nose dive into my head and break my skull.
@ELUNO LOL. I like your sense of humor. Yeah, I would either break my skull or be slowly digested by a kite eating tree.

I havent actually broken those out yet. need to give them a try.
@MrGlass They are actually pretty fun but I have no life so your opinion may differ.
I have a set & they really are cool (literally).
The water does not freeze clear like the photos, but I really don’t care. One dropped in my Scotch is just right.
@daveinwarsh if you freeze them upside down inside another bath of water and them chip them out they SHOULD freeze clear.
@Kirgen try boiling water it comes out much clearer.
@daveinwarsh using a water that has been cleared of impurities (boiling, distilled, etc) helps. There is also a lot that happens in how quickly it freezes that affects things. If you look up how they make those giant ice sculpting blocks theres a bunch of info on it.
@MrGlass All the ideas everyone had sound like a bit of work. I may just try distilled water first & see what happens.
@daveinwarsh @MrGlass @Eluno @Kirgen @CaptAmehrican
Filtered versus distilled water
Both cracked… Dunno why. Both are cloudy as hell. There might be a slight difference on the distilled one. It looked slightly clear on the one side.
Here’s a pile of clear ice chunks that I made employing the method in the video. You can see how clear it is because the bottom piece blends well into the plate.
The clear spheres I made are at the bottom of a bag and I didn’t feel like pulling them out. Sorry.
@RiotDemon Did you boil any of them?
So the unseen clear spheres were successful clear spheres?! Where those made just like in the video?
@ELUNO no. Didn’t boil any of them. I already knew that the filtered or distilled water wouldn’t work to make perfectly clear ice. I’ve read about clear ice many times in the past… But I had the water on hand, and it didn’t take long, so why not.
Here’s a quick blog post that someone did showing boiled water.

Two of the clear ice spheres worked. I don’t know if I could be bothered to make them again. I’m trying to figure out how to suspend my ice shot glass mold upside down in the cooler to make them clear.
@RiotDemon Oh, shot glass mold sounds like a good idea. What material is it? Would it be easy to take the ice out?
Yeah, making clear ice looks to be a super time consuming chore. I’ll take my cloudy ice anytime. I think I will make coke/soda ice to go along with my coke/soda drinks.
@ELUNO it’s a silicone mold that makes 8 at a time. I bought it because any party I go to, the host never has enough shot glasses, so I figured I could make a big bag and bring them. They look kinda… Eh, whatever… with cloudy ice. I have thought about using them for jolly rancher shot glasses.
I also thought about adding food color since they’re cloudy anyway.
Maybe I’ll try that next.
@RiotDemon You have to do the pokeball colored ice balls!
@RiotDemon use flavored liquids. Aka ginger beer with lime for rum shots. Lime juice in water for tequila.coffee for baileys ect
@CaptAmehrican great ideas, thanks!
Wish I had a pair of silicone balls. Then it might not hurt so much when I get hit in them.
@Felton10 I wish I had a pair too. I don’t have any at all now.
@sammydog01 I think I like you better without
/giphy better without balls
@compunaut My husband would probably agree with you.
There’s a really classy Latin food joint near me in Indianapolis called Declicia, they have this amazing cocktail called Fire and Ice… I can’t remember the liquors in it, but it comes with a frozen ball the size of a golfball that is infused with jalapeno peppers and habanero I believe, so the longer you take to drink it, the more ice melts and the spicier the drink gets. I like spicy stuff but 10+ minutes into the drink and I’m searching for bread or cheese or anything to cool my mouth off.
Edit: found a description: It is made with jalapeño infused reposado tequila, hibiscus, basil, habanero reduction, tres chiles in an ice ball.
