Hot Dog Mustard AND Ketchup. I DON’T CARE.
So Shut Up. Been doin’ it that way, MY WAY, since I was a single-digit kid.
Adulthood added the chopped onions and sauerkraut (and dropped the ketchup in that case, because, just NO).
Strong Feelings here.
Yes and I am brand picky. And the brand I like other people don’t. I can’t stand the hot dogs at Costco I think they taste like ass. And my favorite way to have hot dogs this was cheese and chili. None of this mustard or ketchup or relish b******* chili
@Cerridwyn there is a regional hotdog/sausage company that operates from my town and people here act like it is the only acceptable hotdog in the country.
I actually find hot dogs come in two basic taste categories. Showing my age here but:
oscar meyer and farmer john
now, the all beef and kosher ones are neither but they are often closer to one taste palate than another
and neither include the sausages that are often served on buns instead of hot dogs.
or brats
just hot dogs
@Cerridwyn@jouest I’m not a connoisseur of hot dogs by any means, but since I was raised in Rhode Island, I’m partial to Saugy’s hot dogs. When I go to R.I., I try to come home with a package of Saugy’s and some traditional hard soppressata (“soupy”) made by a specific Calabrian family. The real thing isn’t the large soft soppressata you often see in supermarkets.
@Cerridwyn
When you are in Berkeley, California, seek out and eat at Top Dog.
(Near Cal, Southside; there’s one in Oakland too by the Lake)
Your taste buds will be rewarded by the selections.
@JohnQ118 there is a place in Visalia called grill a dog that is really good. They strangely had a second location for a while down here where I am. And it was worth going out for hot dogs
@JohnQ118 I’ve never been to that one but my hot dog disliking daughter has and likes them and I went to the one in Southern California in about the year it was here and I really did like them. Biggest corn dog I’ve ever eaten and better than wanted a County Fair
@sammydog01@Star2236 Not to fan the Upstate New York regional food fires any more than necessary…but Hoffman whites (a/k/a coneys) from the 315 and also available at Wegmans, are hard to beat.
@edsa Doctors that promote carnivore diets say they aren’t that bad for you, esp. the ones that are lower in nitrites.
That’s my excuse for eating them. lol
I love them when they’re really good but I’m usually disappointed by them. They’re not great when I make them at home and the Costco ones are a bargain but not that great either.
Grilled with mustard and dill relish and a toasted bun… Occasionally a chili dog with cheez whiz type cheese like substance. Gods, I miss James Coney Island. Houston people get it.
@ironcheftoni I haven’t bought any recently. I’d suspect hot dogs in packages of 8 are the ‘keep the price the same but make it less quantity’ type of inflation just as a half gallon of ice cream is no longer a half gallon.
@Kidsandliz Hebrew National sells their regular ones in packs of seven, which neatly compensates for the inevitable one bun that’s misshapen or crushed in a pack of eight.
@ItalianScallion@pakopako@yakkoTDI I made Mexican style hot dogs once, bacon-wrapped with salsa, avocado, etc. They were delicious but took so long to make that we ate really late!
I want to eat hot dogs like I did as a kid (which is to say “by the bag”), partially because of nostalgia, possibly because I want to feel young again, but the meat sweats from just 2 stop me.

it’s a damn hot dog. it tastes like a hotdog.
@jouest
LOL

@Cerridwyn I’ve never stopped in there but looks like worth a trip to JoJo’s Grill-A-Dog when driving down on 99 (5101 W Walnut Ave).

JoJo’s

@Cerridwyn so how often do go tasting someone Ass?
https://shirt.woot.com/offers/hot-dogs-identity-crisis
@narfcake oh I love this though
@jouest @narfcake I got that shirt!
You have to cook them until they split open to get the poison out.
@zhicks1987 I like this take
White hots are the best.
@sammydog01
Do you mean fresh polish sausage or is there something new I don’t know about!
@Star2236

It’s a local delicacy but if you’re lucky enough to have a Wegman’s supermarket you can get them.
@sammydog01 @Star2236 Not to fan the Upstate New York regional food fires any more than necessary…but Hoffman whites (a/k/a coneys) from the 315 and also available at Wegmans, are hard to beat.
@Frcal @sammydog01
I had to read on it but I get the difference.
@sammydog01 Why did I read that as
POPCORN Hotdogs? In a Natural Casing…
@Frcal @Star2236 I’ll give them a shot next time I’m at Wegmans but I bet they make an inferior garbage plate.
It is so sad hotdogs are so bad for ones health as they are delicious.
@edsa Doctors that promote carnivore diets say they aren’t that bad for you, esp. the ones that are lower in nitrites.
That’s my excuse for eating them. lol
@edsa @Tadlem43 “lower?” How much lower?
@edsa @Some organic beef hot dogs don’t have any.
I love them when they’re really good but I’m usually disappointed by them. They’re not great when I make them at home and the Costco ones are a bargain but not that great either.

Brand matters too. Anything but Oscar Meyer.
Air fryer. They mostly taste the same to me aside from that.
So why are there a different number of hot dog buns (8) in the package than there are hot dogs in the package (10)?
@Kidsandliz actually, all the ones I’ve bought recently, the hot dogs are in packages of 8 as well
@ironcheftoni I haven’t bought any recently. I’d suspect hot dogs in packages of 8 are the ‘keep the price the same but make it less quantity’ type of inflation just as a half gallon of ice cream is no longer a half gallon.
@Kidsandliz At my house, that means 2 for the (furry, 4-legged) dog.
@Kidsandliz Blue Bell is still half a gallon but it’s also a lot higher than other ice cream
@ironcheftoni @Kidsandliz They’ve come in 8-packs forever though.
I usually chop the extras up and put them in soup or mac&cheese.
@ironcheftoni @Kyeh Well then it has been forever plus 1 day since I bought hot dogs then. I did say I hadn’t bought them in a while.
@ironcheftoni @Kidsandliz Here’s what The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council has to say about it!
https://www.hot-dog.org/culture/hot-dog-fast-facts
@Kidsandliz Hebrew National sells their regular ones in packs of seven, which neatly compensates for the inevitable one bun that’s misshapen or crushed in a pack of eight.
@Kidsandliz two are for the dog
My strong feelings: a hot dog is not a sandwich.
@ItalianScallion Of course not. Hot dogs are tacos.
@yakkoTDI Hot dog in a soft flour tortilla with grated cheese and salsa. It’s what’s for dinner!
@ItalianScallion I have made hot dog tacos and burritos before.
@ItalianScallion @yakkoTDI that’s not too far from a Chicago style
@ItalianScallion @pakopako @yakkoTDI I made Mexican style hot dogs once, bacon-wrapped with salsa, avocado, etc. They were delicious but took so long to make that we ate really late!
@ItalianScallion @yakkoTDI At least hot dogs aren’t soup like cereal is.
I don’t eat hot dogs
I want to eat hot dogs like I did as a kid (which is to say “by the bag”), partially because of nostalgia, possibly because I want to feel young again, but the meat sweats from just 2 stop me.
Nothing I have found locally is better than Hebrew National.
@werehatrack yes Kosher Hot Dog
would taste pretty good!
/showme cats eating Hot Dogs!
