It almost happened once. My oldest brother had driven down from Michigan with his wife, kids, and camping trailer, and had only been at our house for about half an hour when we got a phone call; his wife’s father had just died. They got back in the car and headed home.
That was the first, last, and only time that a “holiday season” get-together was attempted.
It all depends on who they are. I’d let my out of the state aunt stay with me at the drop of a dime but no way would I let my brother stay (we don’t always get along). If they don’t need to be entertained and can make their own food (for breakfast and lunch) then I’m fine if they want to stay a few nights. But it’s the constant entertaining I don’t like.
Ahaha I rather cleverly bought a house that does not invite overnight guests. And then I have not invited guests (except a few good friends with similar non-host tendencies).
Now that the kids are grown and gone we have at least 5 separate usable spaces to host people (office with a Murphy bed I made yrs ago, dedicated guest bedroom, den with inflatable mattress - all in the house. Also pool house with two queens upstairs and an Ikea sleeper sofa downstairs.)
They know where the motel is.
@yakkoTDI A Good One! that is what I would tell them
I don’t do it.
This does not occur in my family.

The family distracts my wife which grants me some peace.
I stole my kid brother’s Advent calendar while visiting home from college one Christmas.
I got 24 days.
I move each year so they can’t find me.
@pmarin that is sneaky!
I don’t celebrate any holidays so if I have family over that time of years it’s like having family any other time of the year.

Why?
I don’t like guests.

Bring it on.
