@jouest I am still LOL at the “ peak gas station sushi” concept. But never been to a country fair; what states are they in? I could put it on bucket list “get gas station sushi at country fair.”
@narfcake Good thing about that is inside you can get 2lb bags of whatever snacks you want for only a bit more than the 2oz bags at 7-11. Though I usually opt for nuts and cheese to use on long road trips. Maybe some jerky.
Of course any trip inside will be at least $100; that’s just the way it goes.but then so is the trip to the gas pump.
Of course any trip inside will be at least $100; that’s just the way it goes.
@pmarin For me, it’s usually not. I mean, it’s not like they sell catshirts by the dozen there, y’know.
but then so is the trip to the gas pump.
I drive a hybrid. I’ll get an EV eventually, but the numbers have to make sense. Between the purchase and high electricity prices here, currently they don’t.
Maybe if I find one that’s sold as “needs high voltage battery replacement” but turns out that it could be fixed in 15 minutes …
I don’t bother either. I have enough ‘real’ options for emergency milk runs (not milk, but you know when you run outta something they carry) and I don’t use Costco but I don’t go inside.
We have a ‘convenience’ store at the complex next door (same owner). It’s local, they have one large retail location up in the mountains where chain stores fear to tread, And a couple of local corner market type things in areas down here. Target and Aldi are about 2 blocks away. This is 1/2 block but more convenient for a few things.
Since they opened in late 2020 yeah then they have revamped merchandise for what is selling. They were originally very organic, now, much less produce, much more convenient foods. Still handy for when the yoghurt went off.
I’m fine with QT, the newer RaceTrac locations, Sheetz in the eastern states, Love’s truck stops in most places, Pilot or Flying J where no better option is evident, and a smattering of specific other ones that I know when I see them.
@werehatrack I live in an eastern state and I’ve never heard of or seen a Sheetz and with that name I’m sure I’d remember. I’ll bet they have mean bean burritos!
@ItalianScallion@werehatrack fun fact about Sheetz: it’s actually the family name. sounds super made up but it’s run by a guy named like Bob Sheetz or something.
@jouest@werehatrack I figured it was something like that. I mean, who would pick a name that had such an obvious implication. Oh wait, there’s Kum & Go…
@werehatrack I think 2019 or so was peak Buc-ee’s for me. Having discovered them traveling to Texas they were amazing and a must stop every time I passed one.
Week before last I stopped at the one in Foley, AL and it was such a a teeming mass of people that I didn’t enjoy it at all. Talked to the cashier while checking out and they said it was actually slow for a Saturday. Grabbed road lunch for 2.5 and one bag of beaver nuggets and $50 disappeared from my wallet.
They’re building one an hour away from me now, and by the time it gets built I don’t think I’ll want to stop there very often.
Now I did go to a newer Racetrac that had an ice cream bar a lot like a froyo place and that was pretty cool.
@djslack@werehatrack I was on a cross-country road trip last week and saw a sign for Buc-ee’s and was so excited. Except it fifty miles past my final destination. Why would they post a sign 268 miles away? It’s mean. Maybe next time.
@sammydog01 right now I think the nearest Buc-ee’s is 180 miles west of me (if no more have sprung up from all this rain). There are billboards for it east of my home. They really want to put that excitement in you to keep on truckin past the QT, Loves, and Pilots of the world to get to their beaver mecca.
@djslack@werehatrack Buc-ee’s is aggressively expanding. I go for the alcohol-free gas and the restroom. Weekends are brutal. During the week is much better.
(I drive a hybrid, so alcohol-free gas gives me the opportunity to try to squeeze out a couple more MPG. And once it was cheaper than unleaded, probably because it was close to expiration.)
“Convenient” is a relative term. We live in a rural area - the nearest (independent) gas/basic grocery mini-store is 5.5 miles away (the next large grocery chain store is 12 miles away). Fortunately, the mini is actually a nice, homey, friendly place, with fairly reasonable prices (as convenience stores go). And I’ve known the owner since high school.
QT or Racetrac. They have the best iced tea. I only go to 7-Eleven on free slurpee day as most of the stores around here don’t make iced tea year round. To them, it’s a “seasonal” item.
Buc-ee’s only if I’m on the road or I need a Texas themed type gift for an out of towner
country fair is peak gas station sushi, that’s all I’m saying
@jouest I am still LOL at the “ peak gas station sushi” concept. But never been to a country fair; what states are they in? I could put it on bucket list “get gas station sushi at country fair.”
@jouest @pmarin And worry about how fresh the hot dogs on that rolly machine are.
@ItalianScallion @jouest I think the point of hot dogs is you don’t need to care. Or think about it. Or what it came from.
@pmarin mostly Pennsylvania. it’s really something.
@jouest @pmarin Wow, I googled it - that’s almost a regular grocery store, isn’t it?
@Kyeh @pmarin for disclosure: this makes it look much nicer and cleaner than it actually is
@jouest @pmarin Really! How disappointing.
Am I the only one who never bothers?
Then again, I pretty much only fuel up at Costco so there’s no option for such anyway.
@narfcake Good thing about that is inside you can get 2lb bags of whatever snacks you want for only a bit more than the 2oz bags at 7-11. Though I usually opt for nuts and cheese to use on long road trips. Maybe some jerky.

@narfcake perfect opportunity to get gas and then impulse purchase eight pounds of sausage and a patio set while you’re there.
Gee… I wonder what prompted that?

@Cerridwyn where does your yoghurt go off to? Summer vacation? Maybe because it feels entitled because it has the extra h you don’t pronounce?
In my experience my yogurt (without the h) likes to age gracefully in the refrigerator even if I don’t find it till weeks or months later.
@pmarin into my overnight oats and into my tummy
Little General.
Wawa. Italian classic hoagies. Bacon croissant Sizzli a close second.
@aetris Delaware native chiming in with full support for Wawa.
@aetris @jouest Wawa is the best for an actual meal, it’s my roadtrip favorite. But 7-11 is everywhere.
@sammydog01 But is there anything GOOD at 7-11?
@aetris our first Wawa is under construction. I look forward to visiting it after the crowds subside.
@craigthom Where WE live, the crowds subside after 9:30 AM and 6:30 PM. I recommend getting the app and ordering ahead.
@aetris Slurpees are excellent.
@aetris I mean the grand opening crowd. I think this will be the first Wawa in the state.

Some would say (usually loudly) Buc-ees!

@djslack @sammydog01 @werehatrack
they post those signs when Buckys is far away, as humor and his promotion
They you should have a sign in New Jersey pointing to Buckys more than 500 miles away and you were supposed to turn around
I don’t go to Buckys much anymore because they’ve gotten very generic and they killed off the kiosk menu where you can custom order
@f00l I did think I remembered ordering from a kiosk before. Now it’s sandwiches and burritos en masse.

The mention of Buc-ee’s got me thinking… Can Wall Drug be considered a convenience store?
@ItalianScallion is that still a thing? also yes.
@jouest I think it is. Haven’t been out that way in years.
QT or Racetrac. They have the best iced tea. I only go to 7-Eleven on free slurpee day as most of the stores around here don’t make iced tea year round. To them, it’s a “seasonal” item.

@ironcheftoni iced tea as seasonal is madness
@ironcheftoni
yeah usually fuel at QT or RT.
Fuel City around DFW has amazing tacos.
@f00l I love a good road taco
@f00l @jouest Road pizza, OTOH, is generally best avoided.
@jouest
They have a 24 hour active kitchen. All is made to order.
