@tightwad Had spam- spam and eggs was good, spam burger was tasty, and I know people who enjoyed the spam musubi they had.

What about the idea that new posters can’t post links, except to Wikipedia and similar?

Would that work?

The posting page could warn them of the newbie restrictions.

Also I suppose you could strip referral links while you’re at it? Or is that a PITA?

@f00l shitcanning new threads with (more than a certain threshold of) Chinese, kanji, or other foreign characters and placing the offenders on a no-post list would take care of ones like OP posted.

Keeping it to new threads would still allow our Korean friends to ask questions in the product threads.

Stripping links from posts created by users less than a certain age or without a certain number of posts would slow it down as well. If the criteria were a number of posts it shouldn’t necessarily be posted as you might get users signing up, posting ten “me too” comments then spamming.

The thing is, you don’t have to make it all Fort Knox up in here, you just have to make yourself less of a low hanging fruit than other sites that allow posting and have similar traffic levels. I suspect part of the increased popularity in spamming here comes from Meh’s traffic levels, subsequent high placement in Google results, and virtually non-existent barriers to entry for posting. Those are also some things that help it be a successful community, so it’s a double edged sword.
