If you want a kid to learn guitar look for a Fender Squier or similar entry level from Yamaha or Samick/Silvertone or Hondo or Washburn on Craigslist or at the local Goodwill, and have a local luthier give it a set-up.
If you want your kid to hate the guitar, get one of these Chinese disappointments.
Tbh I had my doubts but it’s definitely mahogany, same as my Yamaha. It looks deceptively toy like with the super monotone paint, but it’s really not.
Everything on it is actually well built. Yeah it isn’t great sounding because it’s small, can’t produce low end even with the solid top, but as far as staying in tune well and feeling sturdy, it’s pretty solid. Adjustable truss rod I was able to get my action down to where I like it with the included Allen wrench. I would say for a kid or a reluctant adult it’s actually a great cheap starting point, won’t ruin the experience with shitty tuning stability or terrible intonation (although it’s not great obviously, it’s on par with starter guitars). And definitely easier to play than a dreadnought, which I learned on.
I took the risk buying one because I suspected from the description it might be well made and wanted something I don’t feel bad about dropping, leaving out, stepping on, etc. Not disappointed yet!
The accessories it comes with are nice too, actually good picks, good strap, good strong soft bag. Anyone playing will just want to buy a capo, tuner (or use phone), and a combo winder/string cutter and peg puller.
Oh and the strings it comes with are a great brand and type, I get dadarrio when I don’t want to pay 5x for easier sliding elixers. But they’ve clearly been sitting around a while. The guitar is prestrung which is nice for beginners, but even with a wrap of moisture absorbing paper they have rusted a bit. Still plenty usable but they will leave black marks on your fingers and even harder to slide on. They’re usually like $4 on amazon if you want to replace them though.
(PS you’re welcome for the (good) review, meh! put some extra crap in my irk!)
