Elf vs The Santa Clause: Ho ho how are you going to choose?
7Just a little holiday fun here on your Black Friday. One has to go, in a simple 1 v 1 format.
We’ll do more of these movie duels throughout the month, so look for them.
Which do you choose? Be sure to let us know why!

I’ve seen Santa Clause and wasn’t all that impressed, so I’ll choose Elf because I’ve never seen it.
@werehatrack #notthetargetaudience
@ChadP Will Farrell vs Tim Allen, I choose Will. (Usually. Allen’s best work was in Galaxy Quest.)
@ChadP @werehatrack
My favourite movie of all time stars Will Farrell, and it’s one where he’s not playing an out-and-out comedic role (has lots of comedians in it, and has comedic moments, but don’t know I’d classify it as a comedy):
Stranger Than Fiction
Is this where I come to shout that Bell, Book and Candle is a Chrismas movie?
@mossygreen but the only thing I like about that movie is Jack Lemmon. He’s terrific.
My mom, however, loves it. She had a car named Pyewacket before she was my mom.
@craigthom Aw, you don’t even like Kim Novak’s ridiculous, dramatic eyebrows?
Also: I love your mom.
I would have to go with the first Santa Clause, it’s not quite as juvenile as Elf.
But not it’s sequels or the current series on mouse+
My kids didn’t care for the Santa Clause. We Love Elf. Even sober, it’s hilarious.
Elf. Will Ferrel is hilarious and Tim Allen is too political.
Plot-wise The Santa Clause is probably better.
The Santa Claus!!!
I’ve seen neither so I’ll wait until the end of posts here to decide which one to try to find free online to watch.
Elf because it’s way more quotable. Plus, we’ve already watched it.
Elf. I love James Caan.
Elf because Tim is rarely funny.
@yakkoTDI But it’s kind of fun seeing him made a fool of and having to struggle.
Neither of the above because I outgrew weird Christmas movies 20 years ago. I am honestly serious on that and it might be more than 20. Yeah I’m an old funny daddy in some cases
@Cerridwyn funny daddy?
@Cerridwyn @Kyeh I suspect autocorrupt
@Cerridwyn @werehatrack
I was thinking it’s speech-to-text.
@Cerridwyn @Kyeh They go hoof in claw, so yeah, that’s even more probable.
@Kyeh @werehatrack yes it was speech to text and it was late and I was tired and I didn’t look. It was supposed to say fuddyduddy
@werehatrack @Cerridwyn I was pretty sure that’s what you meant. This is funnier though!
@Kyeh @werehatrack especially since I’m not male
@Cerridwyn @werehatrack Right
I like the (dark) writing in Clause, and the cast (Judge Reinhold, David Krumholtz provide a lot of smirks and chuckles), but Elf is just high energy, mirthful mayhem, and provides more laughs.
Will Ferrel is really… “in control” of his chaos here; not too wild, not too stupid, just a perfect amount of silly.
I’m bumping this. I want to hear more opinions on these.
Elf. It’s got a little bit of everything, some funny, some romance, some holiday feels and I’ve enjoyed Will’s comedy. I’ll be leaving cookies out for Buddy and Santa all the same.
You can get Elf socks at Target:
@Kyeh The low-cuts are all “Why bother?” since they’ll be hidden by shoes.
@Kyeh @werehatrack You’re not wearing them with your sandals?
@phendrick @werehatrack I think you’re supposed to wear them when you’re lounging around the house Christmas afternoon.
@phendrick @werehatrack
Without shoes, I mean.
@Kyeh @phendrick My usual footwear is closer to ballet flats, which would display much of the top side, but I don’t go around with just socks in a house shared with this many cats.
@Kyeh @werehatrack I have to wear shoes in the house, or risk stubbing my unprotected toes on the stacks of unopened Meh merchandise.
@Kyeh @phendrick @werehatrack
Let’s see all this unopened meh merchandise? You should auction off a random box this month. lol. Could be an irk from 3 years ago I or something you ordered last week
@Kyeh @Star2236 @werehatrack Do my own IRK events? I don’t need to face the pitchforks of the Meh citizenry who are getting restless over the official IRKs lately anyway. [Even though it is tempting to get rid of some Trakrs that way.]
ooooh… That’s a hard pick, they’re both decent movies.
Have to go with Santa Clause though because thematically it more completely tells the Western Secular Christmas myth. Elf, probably better humor, but SC probably more on-point.
@OnionSoup “Myth”? Didn’t your parents tell you Santa is real and Santa really did bring you your bicycle down the chimney?
@phendrick my parents didn’t want to share credit with Santa. My Christmas gifts were all labeled from “Father Christmas, Mum, and Dad”
Elf all the way. It’s goofy without being too goofy, and it’s joyful. Some movies (Christmas Vacation) are a little on the mean-spirited side. Oh, and with bit parts played by Peter Dinklage, Andy Richter, and Bob Newhart, the cast is great.
“But the children love the books!”
Elf is a must watch every year, The Santa Claus some years.
Voting for Elf as the winner. But, saying one has to go, that’s the loser right?
@edsa There’s no real loser honestly. Just sort of meant to be a fun “duel” between movies people generally enjoy around the holidays and create a little discussion in the process.
SO many people don’t get that the title “The Santa Clause” is a pun and now misspell Santa Claus!
Tim Allen kills Santa Claus and by way of a legal clause, becomes the new Santa Claus.
@PSUClaus1
Username checks out!
(And they even highlighted the “E” in red…)
@Kyeh In my blind rage, I’ve never noticed they highlighted the “E” in red. lol
I’m going with the Santa clause. It’s more my time period (as I was born in 83) and have seen it way more times than elf. Will Ferrell annoys the shit out of me in about 90% of the stuff he does and I can’t watch it. I’ve only seen elf a few times.
Has anyone seen the Capital One ad with John Travolta as Santa?! Creepy!
@Kyeh Oh, that’s cute!
@callow I don’t like JT that much,
so I think it’s weird!
@callow @Kyeh Every time I go to the theater. I think it’s cute.
@callow @sammydog01
Anyone who thinks that a movie whose plot starts with causing Santa to fall from his roof, so he could take over his job (ala Death in the book “On Pale Horse”) a the premise for a movie, is crazy. Elf is much more “Authentic” in it’s innocence.
I remember reading the reviews when it came out , and said, “Yeah that go nowhere”, which is the same I said watching “Spongebob” for the first time, which shows you why I am not in entertainment.
