Hey meh! Quit SPAVING us with mehrathons!!
4The TRUTH is out ya’ll … read the following and see if you think this sounds like what you’ve encountered lately with the mehrathons:
Spaving, a term derived from the combination of “spending” and “saving,” is a cunning marketing strategy employed by companies to entice consumers into purchasing products they may not necessarily need. This tactic plays on the psychological inclination of individuals to feel like they are saving money while spending, creating a sense of value and urgency that drives impulse buying.
We’re being enticed to buy a certain amount of items with the idea we’ll be “saving” on the IRK! Here’s a more in-depth article:
Any thoughts??

Well and of course meh prices lower to also trigger the “saving” idea as well. The X dollars at Amazon, or where ever, pushes that button as well.
@Kidsandliz they used to… Lately I’ve been thinking about a lot of their products “I’ve seen similar cheaper elsewhere”.
I suspect there is a lot more competition to buy the stuff that sellers can’t sell. A lot more companies trying to fill the niche that Meh does (and woot once did). Meh isn’t the bargain site it once was.
That is a marketing pitch that has been made in many forms over the years. Only works if you don’t have will-power, common sense, or are particularly bad at math.
kohl’s does this with their “kohl’s cash” program. Sometimes it is mathematically advantageous to buy $5 more stuff to the get the $50 in sales needed to trigger a $10 certificate valid in a few days. But
A) do you need that last product
B) will you spend more than the “free” $10 on your next purchase (that’s what they a betting on)
@chienfou
Weird … the (“B”) showed up as an icon with sunglasses on! (edit window closed before I could fix it)
{VMod edit: sort of fixed it.}
@chienfou I’m aware of what Kohl’s is up to but they STILL rope me in.
@chienfou or sometimes it will push you over the threshold for free shipping. I feel like I would rather find another item for myself or a gift I can put away for someone else than pay for shipping
@tinamarie1974
exactly. You have to understand the system and play it to your advantage. I do the same at Kohl’s or with the recycling of ink cartridges at Office Depot. You have to spend $10 to get $2/cartridge in credit (up to 10) so I buy stuff for the hospital (low effort staplers, tape dispensers) or the house (K-cups etc) then use the $20 the next month with that month’s $10 minimum purchase to buy bigger stuff like wireless keyboards etc. I can always find ways to earn that money and over the years have gotten free monitors and even an apartment size fridge for the pool house using the rewards credits.
@chienfou So, I don’t have will power, but I’ve got a bit of common sense and am pretty decent with math. And I also have been married for 24 years to a woman who likes to ask:
/giphy What’s in the box
That helps keep me in line.
@capnjb @chienfou …that’s not a(n animated) GIF!
@chienfou @pakopako You just can’t see it.
@chienfou @Kyeh
Kohls does it to me too. All the fucking time with that $5 more till free shipping or $10 kohls cash.
@chienfou @Star2236 And the 30% off which they upgrade to 40% off on certain days - I have gotten some pretty great deals with those. Although they’re restricting those discounts more all the time.
@Kyeh @Star2236
The VAST majority of my ‘nice’ clothes are from Kohl’s. T-shirts are mostly from Lifesouth for giving blood!
@capnjb @pakopako
no… but it needn’t be:

@capnjb @chienfou @pakopako Huh! TIL!
@chienfou @tinamarie1974 @Star2236
Another thing with Kohl’s is the generous return policy; that gets me thinking “oh, if I don’t love it I can always return it,” and then as often as not I do keep it.
@chienfou @Kyeh @Star2236 @tinamarie1974 Or when you do return it, you only get $5 back because of all the Kohls Cash you spent/have spent from the purchase already
@chienfou @DLPanther @Star2236 @tinamarie1974 I’ve let Kohl’s cash go unspent a number of times though.
@chienfou @Kyeh @Star2236 @tinamarie1974
Heresy of the highest order!
@chienfou @DLPanther @Star2236 @tinamarie1974 Spaciness, mostly.
@chienfou @DLPanther @Kyeh @Star2236 I always give my KC to mom. Mind you she does not let it go to waste
@chienfou @DLPanther @Star2236 @tinamarie1974 Nice of you!
@chienfou @DLPanther @Kyeh @Star2236 nah, usually Ive gotten what I need already, so it is mad money for mom
@tinamarie1974
You, my dear, are up for daughter of the year!
@chienfou @Kyeh @tinamarie1974
I have probably $150 in kohls stuff sitting in my back seat I need to return but not in a hurry bc I got 6 months.
During Covid (when all stores were closed) I got screwed, the return time went from a year to 6 month and missed it by 2 days. Instead of things going back to my card I got store credit (that never expired) of $265. I just spent it on a cuisinart 3 in 1 pizza oven. I’m still looking for a decent priced stainless steel cart to put the pizza oven on. So I can wheel it in and out if my garage. I should at least open the box and make sure things look okay though.
"Any thoughts?? "
Don’t buy things you don’t want and don’t need?
@brainmist Huh? No comprende.
I mean, who are you with your sensible attitude and what are you doing on Meh?
That’s kind of the whole point of this site. I can’t think of something more likely to make you buy something you normally wouldn’t than “knowing” that you may not get that same deal again.
We’ll just go ahead and forget SideDeal exists…
The last mehrathon was not good…
@somf69
@somf69
Not totally sure I agree since it’s the first time in forever that I actually bought something.
Just sayin’…
That’s why I don’t belong to BJ’s, Sam’s, or Costco. I can’t afford to save that much money.
@lisagd I converted a bunch of people to Costco during the first pandemic round of gas price hikes, where Costco was consistently 70-75 cents a gallon cheaper. If there’s a Costco gas station anywhere in your normal travel area, it is definitely worth it. Even if you never enter the store!
@lisagd @oxling Ah yes. The savings cults and their different sects.
@lisagd @oxling Except you will need to save more in gas than the membership costs to make it worth it.
@Kidsandliz Sure, if you use less than 100 gallons of gas a year, this probably isn’t advice for you.
@Kidsandliz @oxling I only drive about 5K miles a year, so it wouldn’t be worth it for me. Plus, both Costcos are out of my way.
My thought is “Friends don’t link friends to Fox News”.

Welcome to Western capitalism.
Where have you been the last sixty years?

One of us! One of us!
When I read the Fox article a few days ago, I also thought of the Spaving on the Meh-rathons.
“Buy more-save more” on the IRKs.
It seems that the $99 price and the Meh-rathon offerings were just too much, or we are getting wiser, because at the end of the sale, sidedeal only listed 300+ sold; usually 3x + sold.
