Helpful Goatly reminder: iOS update live at 1PM EST!
7We are less than 1 hour away from the official release of ios9. Apple watch OS 2.0 is out then too. 1 PM ETS. That is all. Enjoy!
Also BACKUP before you do the upgrade... I've had issues before with some people's phones randomly not accepting an upgrade and having to be restored... I'd backup to a computer, and then upgrade from said computer rather than doing OTA upgrades... OTA sometimes crashes. :(

…buuut it's not really important since we don't get the middle finger emoji until 9.1.
Give me points!
The fact that ios is updating is not an excuse for you to duck your goatly duties. You may be totally incommunicado because you're in the Evil Empire, but you're still responsible.
ETS? Is that a new time zone just for ios9?
@OldCatLady Damn autocorrect... Anyway, The build if anyone is curious is 13A344 which is slightly higher than the GM that went out to beta testers/ios devs signaling that there was some change done to the iOS, YES middle finger is in beta 9.1.
Also NO it doesn't update OTA from my public beta... It wants me to go to 9.1 with public beta... I axed the beta profile and it still wants me to go 9.1... RESTORE BUTTON! :)
@mfladd I have the "I fixed it!" on an AA shirt. Too funny, and I'm a WP user.
Downloading now on iPad 2
@Bogie pls let us know how that goes! (What storage size?) Also, is your iPad 2 on 8.4 - and did that perform OK? ('apologies if you've already answered the last question.)
@RedOak I'll try and throw it on my ipad mini 1 (16GB) tonight if I have a chance too..
@redoak I haven't answered any of that information. Current information:
Device: iPad 2, 32gb (27.8GB usable)
OS: 8.4.1(12H321)
Performance was... better than it used to be. For about 3 months my iPad was almost unusable due to how slow it was. This was ultimately fixed with a patch which improved performance. I'm pretty sure that was the update to 8.4.1.
Operational performance... It takes ~30 seconds to load chrome and be able to type something in the address bar. Most apps take 10-15 seconds to load, depending on the weight of the app. My wife's Air 2 is about twice as fast as mine loading the same apps.
Oh, and as I'm typing this it finally finished downloading. The update took ~1hr to download on my work wireless network. For a ~750mb file, that's not too bad. The install started at 1.25pm MST. I'll post when it's done.
Quick update (1:56pm MST): The progress bar has been sitting at like 95% complete for the last 6 minutes.
And it's done (2:01 pm MST). Means it took 36 minutes. Then a couple extra to re-set everything up. It forced me to put a phone number in...
@Bogie thanks for the report. Why a phone number on an iPad?
@Bogie We stupidly missed iOS 7 on our iPad 2. Still running 6. The issue - Safari crashes as more sites apparently expect 7 or 8. Now gotta decide between 8 and 9...
@RedOak So far everything looks similar. Font on keyboard changed. it's very similar, but it is different.
Apps are loading noticeably quicker.
I'll have to continue use it to see if i can see any other changes. I didn't read any update notes so I have no idea what all was changed for the iPad2
@Bogie that sounds promising. Although sometimes it seems the clutter gets flushed with an upgrade. . . only to eventually pile up again.
Downloading now on my iPhone 5. Wanna try it out before my 6s+ gets here.
Unfortunately I wasn't up at 3:01AM EST on Saturday to get my preorder in.. So my phone won't arrive until October 7th or so.. My wife's Rose Gold 6s will be here on the 25th though. Lucky her! (she needs it more, since the battery on her 4s is getting pretty bad)
And since you can only download the OTA if you're on wifi, I had to turn on the hotspot of my blackberry so I can use it to download the update.. lol
@kadagan Curious how it will run on the 5 compared to 8.4. (What storage size?)
@kadagan The battery on my 5 is going to explode any day now, I'm pretty sure. Need to place an order ASAP, but still torn between too large and way too large…
@RedOak I've got a 16GB 5 right now.. Can't wait for my 128GB 6s+!!!
@brhfl Go big or go home?
@kadagan I'm considering it since a: the 'little' one is already not a comfortable pocket size IMO, and b: I use my phone for Lightroom pretty regularly these days.
@brhfl Just get bigger pockets! lol
@kadagan I was hoping they'd release a 5-sized "6". Really like the ease of using it without needing both hands. Still like the 5 tho - not really feeling the need to replace it.
Wow - 6s+ 128GB? That's like a $grand!
@RedOak I'm big into my tech.. haha.. and I'm constantly frustrated with my lack of storage on my current phone.. With 2 young kids I take a lot of pictures and videos, and have to waste space with apps that will keep them quiet in public.. lol.. so I figured I might as well drop a little extra now for less trouble later. Definitely getting a warranty though! Probably going to go through Square Trade.. I've never warrantied a phone before, so that's new ground for me.
@kadagan hmm. I like tech too but temper it with my cheapness. And really, the 5 is still a nice phone. The 6 feels slippery to me even if it is a nice design.
I definitely get your point on the storage. 16 GB is very tight for photos. Will go with 32/64 next time. Not so concerned about apps as I only keep actively used apps on it.
@kadagan on the warranty thing - not sure whether AppleCare makes sense when you look at the deductible. Square Trade might make more sense.
Check the screen replacement costs from Apple for reference - I think they range from $99-129.
@RedOak That's without applecare. Pricing on screen replacements:
No Applecare:
Phone 6s Plus: $149
iPhone 6s, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5: $129
iPhone 6: $109
Have AppleCare+?
AppleCare+ covers two incidents of accidental damage with a $79 service fee. You can also use our Express Replacement Service to get a replacement even before sending us your iPhone. You can check if you have AppleCare+ by entering your iPhone serial number.
@kadagan Part of it is more than big-enough pockets, just overall comfort… the 5 was longer (and obviously thicker), but about the width of a credit card, so all my cards and my phone just lump up nicely together in my pocket. But, those days are past, which makes the decision all that much more difficult. My 64GB 5 is always at 0B free, so going for 128 regardless… and at that point the price differential is kind of less of an issue… bah!
@RedOak Aside from being slippery, the rounded 6* design means you can't just set it on something to take a photo on self-timer… something rather handy about the squared off 5*.
@brhfl I was mostly kidding about the bigger pockets and go big or go home.. Haha
@kadagan Oh, I know, it just got me thinking…
@sohmageek Yes, I wasn't very clear. My point was that AppleCare+ might be a questionable investment since screens (most common issue) are not that much cheaper with AC+.
I suppose if you think there's a chance of another non-abuse incident (no $79 fee). But not sure how common that is.
@brhfl Hah! A person can never have too much storage! Whatever we have, we fill.
And I should care why?
@Cerridwyn apparently enough to click thru a highly transparent title and post.
Does it work? Anyone have any issues? I tend to let others test it for a couple days before I update. ;)
@thismyusername so far I really like it! It's been good on my 5. It seems snappier than ios8 was, so that's pretty cool
@kadagan I'm liking your reports! Keep 'em coming.
@thismyusername seems so far so good. Lots of little improvements but nothing mindblowing on my 6+. I like the new battery info and saving a little space is nice.
@thismyusername I updated my 6 last night. I haven't had a ton of time to mess with it. I like that Siri has pretty colors now. Not to thrilled with having more apps I won't use, but can't delete. Find Friends and News both came with the update. They may be useful to some, but meh. Many of the apple apps seem to have to have updated. Haven't had time to poke through them, but notes says it's changed, didn't notice anything major with it.
It's running fine. So far the only app I have that no longer works (that I've tried) is Woot.
I'll be trying to update my ipad2 after work.
@remo28 I like the concept of the news app, but it doesn't seem to be as "smart" as it should be.. I took a little bit of time to customize some topics that interest me, including my political outlook and sports preferences.. And it is supposed to find articles that go along with them.. But almost all the political articles it suggests to me are the opposite of what I want to read (more in line with Apple's politics than mine). Needs a little work.. haha
Downloading now on my iPad Air2. If something bad happens I will blame @sohmageek.
@heartny I am just now seeing this... I think notifications are not 100% working as I should have gotten this e-mail... I'm sorry if something bad happens... if not I'm glad! How did it go?
@sohmageek I didn't bother with notifications and just went to settings to download the update anyway. As expected, I had to go into settings when it was done and put back everything the update changed. Why does it feel compelled to turn on Bluetooth? The icons got smaller so I can fit more into the folders. However, I am not happy about the new screen that is blank with the exception of the search bar at the top that I will never use. I shall blame you for that.
I updated OTA from iOS 8.4 to iOS 9 on my iPhone 6 today. All went well. But the Woot App isn't iOS9 ready yet, so lost that for the time being.
@shortman They have a beta... I Was invited twice... once offering me $10 and a 2nd offering me $20 to test it... It's pretty slick... but missing a search function.
@sohmageek they should put that money towards making a proper mobile or better yet a responsive site.
@Ignorant agreed. Mobile life has become App Litter Hell (ALH syndrome). I refuse to install yet another commercial app on my devices unless there is a really compelling reason. Just give me a clean, responsive mobile-optimized web site.
So the thing is that if you are on 7 you might want to wait a bit for apple to figure out what is going on with the 7-9 jump... (or just backup your phone and be prepared to wipe it to upgrade).
Have had no issues going from 8 to 9 on my ipad air2 or iphone 5s.
Updated a 4s and it seems to work too, but it's not my phone so not sure about day to day living with it.
@thismyusername Valuable information!
So weird...all is well on my 6 except sometimes the input line of the messages app has what appears to be a audio clip timed at 0:00 and I can't get rid of it. I have to close the app and restart
@tightwad the microphone icon to the right of the text entry will record an audio message for as long as it's pressed. Any chance you hit it on accident?
I sometimes get it and the dictation microphone icon on the keyboard mixed up.
@Ignorant I don't have that icon. I continues to happen although not often enough to be repeatable...haven't discovered what the trigger is yet
@tightwad very strange. You don't have the icon in the top right of this screen grab? Once you start typing it turns to "send"
And just to add, it might only be there if the person you are texting is also on an iPhone/iMessage.
@Ignorant most of my text conversations open with the send option there. I did find it on a fairly new conversation with the other icon.
@tightwad yeah it'll only show up on conversations with other iPhones/iMessage.
apple watch update is live!
