I’ve been saving $25/week in a high yield savings account since the closing ceremonies of the Rio Olympics. Hopefully that should cover a visit to Tokyo for the 2020 Summer games.
@theredia You may want to go prior to the games, unless you’re willing to brave what will likely become the most crowded public transit system in world history, during the country’s rainy season and the hottest time of the year. I had a bad enough time dealing with other tourists and weather in early May, so I can’t imagine what things will be like during the games.
I miss that place sooooo bad! Virtually no crime, everyone is polite, the food is amazing, and there always seems to be something cool/weird going on. Granted I lived near Tokyo so results may very on amount of activities, but everything else is country-wide.
Went to college in west Tokyo. None of my colleagues actually believe me because I’m basically the whitest girl. (Hey the uni paid tuition/housing/food stipend as long as I taught college level English, so I walked out of college with no debt!)
In middle school I got select as 1 of 20 students to participate in a student exchange program. I got to go live in Japan with a family for 2 weeks. A few months later, their son came to the US and lived with my family for 2 weeks.
It was a lot of fun. I really want to go back now that I’m an adult. I get to interact with people from Japan through my work on a regular basis. Still trying to figure out how to get myself sent to that fab (Oh, and Singapore too).
Attended the 1970 World’s Fair in Osaka, with family. Two week tour of the country by JTB, then two more weeks on our own. At 16, it was a life-changing, or at least a palate-changing, experience. My dad was stationed there in 1945, and had always wanted to return.
Attended Worldcon in Yokohama. Spent three weeks touring China before the convention and a week in Yokohama. My best friend couldn’t afford to go, so I used many years of frequent flyer miles to buy him a plane ticket to Japan for his birthday.
A sign outside the visitors’ center at Mount Fuji.
Just because of hilarious we ate at a terrible Mexican restaurant in Yokohama (“enchiladas” eaten with chopsticks), and were surprised at how good the mariachi was. My friend Steve took this video. I wish he’d panned around a bit and showed our plates.
I just got back from a 10-day honeymoon there. We went to Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and Hakone. It was awesome and we both want to go back very badly, we fell in love with the Saga-Arashiyama area of Kyoto especially. Had the best steak of my life there, too.
And yeah, Don Quijote is something else. I hope you went to Ichiran while you were nearby, @skemmehs.
I’ve never been to Japan, but I’ll go if someone pays for my plane ticket!

No, but I’ve been to South Korea (and I’d visit SK again).

No, but I’ve owned seven or eight Hondas starting with a red Honda 600 sedan in 1972.

Does the Japan section of the World Showcase at Epcot count?
No, but I have seen an original godzilla movie or 2.

@division10 That’s a good deal! My wife and I have both briefly considered JET but it’s sadly not plausible with our student loans.
Went last year for a week. It was amazing.

私は沖縄に3年間住んでいました。

I went to Sendai. Lot of weird stuff, but the thing I wasn’t prepared for was everyone saying “Are you Mormon?” as an introduction.
