Because of a bad back, vacuuming and mopping really exacerbate it, but I can do a room or two at a time. But if I'm having a lot of people over and I need the whole house vacuumed and mopped at once, I pay various grandkids. And pay them well.
I have someone in for cleaning if we are hosting a party or family gathering. I'm too broken to keep house properly any more, so it gets pretty disastrous up in here. I wish I could afford to have someone come in regularly.
It's not cheap but it sure is nice to have someone else do the cleaning. I don't usually like to admit to anyone that I pay for it though, feels too elitist and strange.
One day I will take advantage of a groupon or amazone local deal on house cleaning.
Until then, I'll do it myself, using the roombas from woot (sorry meh... you haven't sent me one in a fuku yet) and the dyson (also from woot... might eventually need a replacement) and other cleaning supplies I've purchased from more local stores.
Joan comes every two weeks. She does in five hours what would take me two days. Completely worth the money. Otherwise I'd spend every other weekend cleaning or have a dirty house. And there's no way I'd spend every other weekend cleaning.
BTW, she loves the Dyson I bought last time they went up for sale here.
@SSteve Ditto, except her name is Lisa at my house. More time for my family and myself is well worth the money. She even changes and washes the sheets!!
I've had to hire a cleaning service once. For what I paid it wasn't worth it. At least not in my area. I wish I could do it myself but that isn't an option. I just have Thing 1 and Thing 2 clean, they are weird and love chores.
@xarous Are you Adam Savage incognito or did you just steal the "Thing 1 and Thing 2" thing from him? I suppose you could have come up with it on your own too, but Adam Savage is the first person I've ever heard refer to his children that way (and only person up until now).
@elangomatt I have a twin and because of Dr. Seuss we were called Thing 1 and Thing 2 after our births because at that point they couldn't tell us apart. So when I had children and started yelling the wrong name it became Thing 1, Thing 2, Thing 3. :)
@elangomatt Maggie Stiefvater also does that, as does my friend Andrew. It's not as odd as you think. (Both are book people, maybe it's a book nerd thing?)
Like pooflady said 9 hours ago: I can clean and be miserable for 3 days, or I can live with the dirt and dust. So I'm choosing to keep my old car, wear my clothes out before buying new, and availing myself of a capable woman who supports her kids by cleaning houses. Make jobs; hire a house cleaner!
Had cleaning services come in twice. First time they broke a Tiffany-style lampshade, $500 to repair, they claimed no responsibility. They're gone. A year later we hired a private individual, highly recommended, after 3 months we found $3,000 in inherited jewelry missing and he'd made a midnight move to another state 1,000 miles away. Cops couldn't help. Cleaning service? No way.
I would, except the things I most hate cleaning are things the cleaning services I've looked at don't do either: Bathrooms and scrubbing down the kitchen. And they won't organize my house for me either. So basically they just do the cleaning stuff I already don't mind doing and do adequately. No point.
We do, twice a month. They get kitchen and bathrooms cleaner than we've ever been able too. It's so nice walking in after work into a freshly cleaned and scrubbed down house. Knowing she's coming also helps us keep the place clean in between visit.
We tried once a month while in the apartment, but quickly went back to twice a month. Just feels better in this small place and keeps our cleaners income level the same from us. Although once house is finished could cost more due to increased sqft and additional bath.
I have two people come in twice a month. They do an awesome job on the kitchen and bathrooms and finish in about 1.5 hours. They are fantastic and way cheaper than you would ever expect.
Miss Betty comes every tuesday from 8:30a-3pm. I have real LOVE for her. Seriously...She's like a 65 year old whirlwind! I don't know how she does it all. I hope when I get her age I can still move like that. I have to work too many hours at my job to have time for everything she does. And..I'm very stingy with my days off...not spending them doing laundry!
I wish I could, but at least there was a Roomba in my fuku. Thanks Meh!
It depends. Not sure if I was paying her to clean or to wear the French maid costume. ;)
@eyewerks This is a long running fantasy. Still just a fantasy, sadly.

I paid for a neato to clean my house, does that count?
I wouldn't feel comfortable with a stranger cleaning my house... what if they find the bodies?

@elangomatt Have... have you never read The Cat in the Hat ?!?!?
@elangomatt when was this? A friend and her brother were occassionally referred to as Thing 1 and Thing 2 by her parents in the 90s.
@jqubed I cannot believe you have never read that
Use your eyes to see the words you would
I am sure that you could.
I like pie!
No answer for being too cheap/poor to pay someone else to do it? Well, that's me!
@luvche21 Does that differ from "No, but I would if I could"?

@MSticklefeather Ditto! Well said. I agree totally!
