Happy July 4th! What are your plans today?
9Tonight I am taking the kids to the local Minor League game. I bought tickets to the Executive Suite event which includes indoor/outdoor seating, a picnic buffet, and a fireworks show (I am glad about the air conditioned suite today). Arthur Perdue Stadium is a really great minor league ball park, which includes all reserved seating, numerous events, and even an classic carousel for the kids. A big draw for the team right now is that they have Ryan Ripken - son of Oriole’s legend Cal Ripken.
So tell us what your plans are. Whatever they are - Enjoy, and be safe!
(edit: I am leaving the meh generated topic bubble for once. Nice job @mediocrebot!)

Watching fireworks. Starting on the list of things mom needs done (got here late last night - I drove through way too many (short) torrential downpours and, for a change, traffic slowed to a crawl rather than trying to out run the rain drops.
Plus earlier I had to stop about every (literally) 50 miles to clean the windshield because there was a torrential downpour of suicidal bugs. Seriously it sounded like rain on my windshield. Some stops to clean the windshield they all came off with almost no scrubbing and others I swear they only had water in there to use.
You know it just occurred to me that this wasn’t nearly as big a problem on the highways as it was for the first 3 hours on rural farm roads maybe because the traffic on the highway ahead of me already thinned out the bug herd?
Neighborhood pool party. Free food I don’t have to cook!
Latté, bacon & eggs, a little yard work, practice with my band, then to the next-door neighbor’s for an impromptu pot luck.
@SSteve What strain/variety of pot?
@OldCatLady My friend is chief chemist at https://getbloomfarms.com so I have a nice selection of Chemist’s Choice cartridges.
@OldCatLady @SSteve the website is blocked and I’m not even at work. Must have some setting fucked up on my phone…
@SSteve Daayummm. Ask them when they are expanding into Florida.
@llangley Maybe you have an ad blocker that considers it an adult site?
Sit in my cube in work if I want to get paid.
All I have to do is be at work. Completed half my pushup/chinup routines so far, listening to '70s rock and contemplating a coffee machine! I must go out for a jog around the building - I’ll still be on-camera.
Wound up being better than expected - got a text from an old school friend and spent the evening at his hillside place target shooting with slingshots, eating German pastries his wife made and sipping the Amrita from Casemates that I provided. Got home before the rain and spotted some nearby fireworks which was plenty for US!
Big family cookout then fireworks.
3 racks of baby-back ribs in the smoker for 4-5 hrs.
Also 12 bratwurst going in smoker later.
@daveinwarsh Yum!
Lazing and cleaning.
@f00l I’m transplanting tomatoes and annuals and making a succulent dish garden. And cooking.
Working at home. Got an unexpected project dropped on my desk late Tuesday that starts Thursday morning; there’s hours of prep to do. At least I didn’t have to go to the office.
But we are going to grill tonight, burgers and beans, potato salad, cinnamon rolls for desert, and wave our wimpy sparklers and party-poppers at the police when they drive by looking for anyone with actual fireworks.
@duodec And the burgers turned out perfect. I don’t grill enough to really get good at it but these were awesome! Only the cinnabuns left to eat while watching fireworks!
Chilling with the boy…hubby and the girl are taking a canopy tour somewhere in the wilds of w. Va… think we have the better plans!!
@mikibell watching back to the future! Introducing him to bad 1985 cgi!! Remember when this was considered state of the art?!?!
@mikibell And to the days when there were Fox Photo booths in every thriving mall parking lot?
@therealjrn kodak in my memory…but yeah!! I have to say the kid has chuckled quite a bit!
Oh and I am not being a slacker mom for fireworks. Our town had fireworks on Sunday and neighboring had them last night, we went to each. Think they took those dates for the discount!
@mikibell They were Kodak here too, but the movie features Libyan terrorists crashing into a Fox Photo booth in Twin Pines Mall.
@therealjrn yup just saw that and pointed it out to the kid – he just called me old… sigh
Watching Part II now!!
@mikibell ‘canopy tour’?
@compunaut ziplining through the treetops. Not as amazing as it sounds, they said. They said the 2 mile long zipline was better and the whitewater rafting was the best!
@mikibell ended up watching all three Back to the Future movies. Was cool to sit with the kid that long… Even if his head was in his laptop, programming something he calls Jarvis. I now have to secretly watch Iron Man to understand!
Minor league AA Tulsa Drillers game, then fireworks. No cookout–it’s too hot.
@therealjrn Minor league baseball is fun! I’ve been to a couple Sacramento River Cats games.
Work is done. Going to stop at the grocery store which hopefully won’t be crazy.
Then just chilling. My neighbors light fireworks so I might open the curtain and look out.
Happy Independence Day from Fenris! Fireworks aren’t the only thing we’re blowing up in my yard tonight
Watching Boston Pops on Bloomberg TV, and ‘1776’ on TCM later. Less than a mile away are three Fleet Reserves, and Moosehaven and the Naval Air Station are each about 3 miles away. Usually everyone sits in their driveway and rotates their chairs as the shows go on.
Eat
Game
Sleep
Listen to Politics Takes a Holiday (awesome as always)
Great day. Kids wanted to go to a beach today. I was like, ugh…no way I am going near O.C. or Assateague today. Instead we searched for a well kept secret beach on the Nanticoke River. 1 p.m. on July 4th and the beach only had a small scattering of people! SweeT!
Baseball game was great! It appears the special seats/picnic package I purchased I got lucky on for it was meant to be offered only to season ticket holders The team had an auction for specialty game shirts the players wore tonight. All money goes to charity. I shouldn’t have from a financial standpoint, but for the kids I put my name in and won a pitchers shirt. I look for the players who have no ones name down yet and hope no one else will sign up. That way I win the shirt for $100 w/o an auction. That $100 was my money for 2 Subaru Outback door panels, but the kids… They then go on the field, the player takes off the jersey, signs it and poses for pics with them. The kids were soooo excited. My daughter posted the pic to instagram, found the pitcher on it, and wrote him a note about buying the shirt and wishing him well in his career. Within minutes he had written her back and followed her on instagram. She was elated (mostly cause he is HoooT I am told
One jersey sold for $4000 - WTF!!! are people thinking?!
All in all, a very good 4th of July. Fireworks too were wonderful. Hope everyone else had a wonderful day!
@mfladd
So precisely where is this beach?
@PlacidPenguin
I can’t remember.
@mfladd They’re thinking “Damn those beers were tasty.”
@mfladd
Well, when you remember, I’ll be right here.
@mfladd @mfladd Sometimes people deliberately bid up stuff to support the charity. I went to a charity auction at a game convention. Normally the charity was a children’s reading program. But a few months earlier a convention regular was injured by a mugger and left in a coma. They decided to give half the auction proceeds toward his medical bills and people bid with a will on everything. After the donated games were sold, some people returned them to be auctioned again. The guests donated their talents and folks bid hundreds for seats at gaming tables with developers, for their names and likenesses to be used in CCGs or in guest authors’ novels. When they ran out of things to auction, they auctioned off the pencil, the auctioneers coffee cup and finally the gavel. I’ve never seen such a spirit of giving.
@moondrake I was sitting near the woman who was outbid on the $4000 jersey. She was not a happy camper about it

Drove up to Denver for Western Regional Science Fiction Convention (Westercon). Had dinner at a little neighborhood pizza place on the patio, to soak up the cool weather after leaving the desert. Watching a bunch of fireworks. Now I’m enjoying a leisurely breakfast at this very nice Marriott before hanging my art.
work… sigh…
Hung out at the guest dock at the marina with our boating group. Good time.
