Ribs and brats. I’m not in the mood to do a brisket. I can get one acceptably smoked in three or four hours if I load the grill correctly, (five or six if I’m being lazy) but finishing it in the oven takes overnight, and it’s too damn hot for that.
@tweezak
I’ve had pulled Jackfruit that tastes like pulled pork, not sure where I can source nutria locally. Maybe at Thanksgiving when we go to New orleans??
@chienfou@tweezak My Spanish II teacher in high school constantly tried to sell us on trapping and eating nutria. That was one I was never really keen on trying.
@sillyheathen@tweezak
When we were in Peru cuy was a big thing. Turned out to be essentially Guinea pigs. Never had a chance to try them though. I am generally not averse to putting a fork in anything you can put on a plate…
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@chienfou@sillyheathen@tweezak@pmarin
There was once a local who was trying to develop a market for nutria (as human food). No surprise, he was not successful in building a business around large river rat burgers.
@kittykat9180
Yummy. I found a great recipe for morrow relish. It is made from overly large zucchini. It has become my go-to relish for everything now.
@chienfou@kittykat9180 so it’s not for today then? Guess I’ll try some to-morrow. seriously, what is it? I love pickling and vegetable relish, but mostly just buy books and watch tv shows. In my “retirement” hope to do more.
@kittykat9180@Kyeh
You’re right, it is. Obviously need to proofread better. I blame it on the fact that I have company so I’m trying to post to this forum when I can sneak away for a few minutes! Or maybe it’s just the beer…?
@Zeusandhera
Sorry, I have to respectfully disagree.
I love fresh veggies on the grill. Did kabobs with marinated eggplant, yellow squash, and zucchini (all fresh, all from my garden) a few nights ago. They were delicious. And grilled corn turned into ‘Mexican street corn’ is one of my favorites.
@chienfou yeah, no. Say I grill a nice juicy poop burger, the then just scrape off some of the ashes of the poop, burn the rest off for 10 minutes and say it’s “effectively clean”. That’s still charred poop remains. I just find it gross as a vegetarian.
@chienfou@Zeusandhera Since we got on the subject of barbecue cleaning, I’d like to remind everyone of the danger associated with grill brush wires coming loose and possibly getting in your food and then your throat or worse. This happens way more than you expect. Destin of Smarter Every Day on YouTube invented a new safer scrubber and set about making it 100% IN THE USA! This was a major project but the results are great. I bought one and if you use it right it works excellent. It’s pricey but it’s tough. Basically a buy once, cry once product. https://www.jjgeorgestore.com/the-smarter-scrubber/
Spending the weekend hosting friends of ours who were about the first people we met when we moved to Alabama almost 40 years ago. Their kids and our kids “grew up together” even though we were over 45 minutes away. Pool time and adult beverages will be the order of the day weekend.
Yesterday was taco night, breakfast today will be fruit salad yogurt etc, lunch will involved grilling some turkey burgers, 4:00 will find us plunked in front of the 4K TV in the pool house watching the France play Paraguay, and after the game we will do homemade pizzas in the pizza oven I have that fits inside my gas grill. There’s also a fresh watermelon in the fridge getting cold. Picked it yesterday.
All of this will involve intermittent pool time (with beers and/or rum drinks) and hanging out catching up with what’s been going on with our families. They’re planning to downsize from the rural 40 acre property they’ve lived on since before we knew them to a garden home in a town. Major change! We haven’t seen each other for three or four months so there’s lots to talk about…
Impossible burger. I made a pasta salad, fruit salad, veggie tray and Rice Krispies. We also have chicken kabobs, a regular salad, rolls and cookies for dinner. Chips, salsa and queso dip for boat with a full cooler. Just get breakfast done before a full day of drinking starts on the lake.
Only thing that sucks is that it’s been sunny every day for the past week and today is cloudy. I’m hoping it clears up. I’ll still have fun no matter what.
Brats and wings, pasta salad with veggies from the garden, crispy smashed parm and chive potatoes, corn on the cob/elote, watermelon, berry trifle. Cornhole, movie on the lawn and lots of laughing.
@DWend
I hear you. In honor of our multicultural heritage (and the FIFA world cup) we did tacos Friday night, grilled burgers with elote (mexican street corn) for lunch, and home-made pizza after the France Paraguay game. Multinational beverages were also part of the days.
Been boiling hotdogs all afternoon. I’ve been searing them as I toasted Hawaiian bread and cheeses. Tomorrow is going to be more toasting (rye) and all the bacon and eggs I have.
Hope you all had a fantastic fourth. We have company over for the weekend but I did take a break to watch the France Paraguay game yesterday. France advances to meet Morocco in the quarters.
Grilled burgers and corn for elotes before the match for lunch. Made pizza for dinner…

Nice to know I can still do that after 50 years!

@sillyheathen f00l
We made three. One with freshly made pizza sauce and other veggies from the garden, one with olive oil, fresh mozzarella balls, tomatoes, and basil (margarite) and one with fresh pesto, preserved figs, and some roasted eggplant.
All of them were on fresh dough I made from my sourdough starter and proofed in the fridge over the last 2 days. The four of us managed to polish off all three pizzas!
I don’t have an ooni, but I do have a pizza oven that sits inside my gas barbecue grill which works wonderfully.
Smoking some ribs, pulled pork, and chicken wings for the fam.
40% of the options are rabbit food? Really?
BBQ ribs, home made french fries, chips, guacamole, and another dip.
@duodec Even as somewhat that doesn’t eat meat on a regular basis, I’ll take real meat or real vegetables over a false beef patty any day.
@brennyn @duodec
What about a black bean burger?
@brennyn @kittykat9180 Still rabbit food. I have no problem with vegetables. I do have problems with fake meat products.
I’ve had black bean patties (not burgers). They’re ok, but they are not burgers.
@brennyn @duodec
I used to get them from Trader Joe’s
Grilling “out” implies the existence of grilling in.
@brennyn George Foreman enters the room
@brennyn @nobile I happen to have a tabletop grill (electric) that we use indoors.
@brennyn I just meant that the poll’s terminology is silly. Both are grilling. When I make cookies, I don’t say that I’m “baking in”.
@brennyn Well, why not?
@brennyn
My gas stove has an interchangeable grill/griddle top.
We’re making mixtas: corn tortillas with guac, pickled cabbage, a hot dog link, mayo, ketchup, and mustard.
I’ll take 3 Bahama Mamas
with the works!! Oh, and a Pepsi too!
Ribs and brats. I’m not in the mood to do a brisket. I can get one acceptably smoked in three or four hours if I load the grill correctly, (five or six if I’m being lazy) but finishing it in the oven takes overnight, and it’s too damn hot for that.
Ribeye steak!
Could I have some potato salad with that, please?
Porterhouse steak, medium rare.
@tweezak

@chienfou @sillyheathen @tweezak small cute animal begs to differ…
@pmarin @sillyheathen @tweezak
Hold my lamb slider while I think about that…
@chienfou @sillyheathen @tweezak @pmarin
There was once a local who was trying to develop a market for nutria (as human food). No surprise, he was not successful in building a business around large river rat burgers.
@chienfou @macromeh @pmarin @sillyheathen @tweezak
Then he was possibly not in Louisiana?
I hear the locals there will cook and eat almost anything. Furthermore, whatever they make is excellent.
I’ve been told that the grocery stores around Baton Rouge are a marvel. They supposedly sell everything that the locals might cook.
Cheeseburgers!
We’re having beef ribs cooked on a traeger, green beans and deviled eggs with bacon on top.
Bacon cheese burger or a brat with mustard and dill relish.
@kittykat9180
Yummy. I found a great recipe for morrow relish. It is made from overly large zucchini. It has become my go-to relish for everything now.

@chienfou that sounds interesting. I’d give it a try.
@kittykat9180
Morrows are essentially the zucchinis that get away from you and end up being the size of a small volkswagen…
@chienfou @kittykat9180 I thought it was “marrow”?
@kittykat9180 @Kyeh
You’re right, it is. Obviously need to proofread better. I blame it on the fact that I have company so I’m trying to post to this forum when I can sneak away for a few minutes! Or maybe it’s just the beer…?
Thanks for including veggie options! I’ll microwave mine though, grills are gross!
@Zeusandhera
@chienfou ah maybe if I had a dedicated veggie grill. I find the way normal grills are “cleaned” gross.
@Zeusandhera
Turning the grill on for 10 minutes to preheat before you cook anything means everything is effectively burned off the cast iron grates…
@chienfou yeah, no. Say I grill a nice juicy poop burger, the then just scrape off some of the ashes of the poop, burn the rest off for 10 minutes and say it’s “effectively clean”. That’s still charred poop remains. I just find it gross as a vegetarian.

Still safer than using spinach or lettuce tainted with e coli…

All of the above that do not start with the word veggie.
Don’t not like them. Just don’t choose them.
I’d like a bratwurst!
@user74860313 I think I’d prefer a bratbest.
The baby backs are ready to go into the smoker. Fresh corn on the cob and baked beans will go at the end.

Oh! And bacon wrapped grilled jalapeno poppers
@sillyheathen
I did elotes as well, good stuff. Didn’t do poppers this time . Love them stuffed with smoked cream cheese.
Bought myself a steak. Home alone don’t will be nice and quiet!
I am a pure bred American! So I am making tacos!
