Handmade. I’ve progressed a long way since I was 8, and painted a cardboard box to be an alien. (Got the eye holes all wrong, had to be steered the whole night.)
I’m not particularly skilled, but since most of my looks involve being dead for a while, lack of skill translates as advanced deterioration. And for the less decayed…I can kinda just raid my closet.
I will confess to having some storemaid stretch velvet costumes. Those evil cultist robes make excellent jammies.
@heartny My nephew’s wife sent me a pic of this and said I should wear it. I had to tell her it is not as lazy as the one year I went as a jogger wearing the t-shirt and shorts I had been wearing all day.
You’re not likely to run into someone wearing the same thing as you when you make it. I did a Crash Test Dummy in like 1990 and haven’t seen another since.
I assembled my Evil Mad Scientist costume from store-bought parts. Ultimately, you will have to buy something unless you can spin your own cotton or you’re “Corn-Husk Guy.”
I made my grim reaper costume except my mask and gloves… So technically, both.
Here it is for anyone who hasn’t seen it:
I’d say, more hand-assembled than hand-made; the components were made by someone else.
@phendrick This.
Handmade BY THE KIDS!

Usually a combination of the two. Pieces and parts to make something different
Got this from Wal-Mart. Works for me.

Here’s my homemade pirate costume, a Buck-an-ear:
Growing up handmade or assembled out of dress up clothes, with my kid the same.
Store bought if I bother to dress up. Usually I just buy myself bags of candy the day after Halloween. Much more satisfying.
I’m so ecclectic I just go to my closet or clothes storage. I even have weird hats.

Store Bought because the best costumes require quality work and patients, and I don’t want to do any of that.
@bubbatank patients? For spare parts?
@st_ellis Woops! Joke fail. I meant patience.
Store bought because I’m lazy and lack talent in the assemblage of said costumes. Also, I’m tired. Really, really tired.
Husband and I dress up most years because it’s the anniversary of our first date. Homemade because it’s fun and we can be more creative.
