If you’re going to make a smart shower, give it features I actually need, like, blasting “keep your head up” by Andy Grammer when I start crying in the shower
@alacrity@brainmist
Hadn’t seen this one but I do love that box series. I’ve had some amazing ones in the past including the crib dribbler, and an 10-ft snugly with multiple holes for several people to be able to sit under at the same time.
My 25 yo adjustable-spray shower head is doing fine, or I might be tempted. But honestly, the gimmick that tempts me? Is the hydro-power. That’s… That’s actually pretty clever. I’m not clear how that works with low water pressure to improve pressure (maybe by reducing diameter to increase speed/pressure?) but it’s a cool idea.
Now, do I want to open an app to fiddle with temp every shower instead of the time-honored ritual of just sticking out my hand?
Ahahaha no.
Do I want my shower to nag me that I’m exceeding my water quota just trying to feel good for a few minutes, while regional data centers spike power costs, consume water, and pollute what they leave?
Also no.
I do think the hydroelectric power in your shower is cool. But maybe it could do something less depressing?
@brainmist@kuoh There was an app-controlled shower system that could set the temperature and more-or-less keep it there, but it’s not in the shower head. It’s a replacement for the temperature knob, and installation involves a lot of plumbing work. Big Clive did a teardown on youtube, search his channel for “Smartap”. Of course, it needed the cloud to work and the company went out of business because they lost money on every unit they sold. It was a seriously swanky design with really expensive components…
He also did a teardown of a water-powered LED showerhead, but that one just lit up, no weird extra features nobody asked for.
@brainmist It can’t possibly improve water pressure while using part of that water pressure to drive the turbine. Turbines remove power from the water so humans can use that power elsewhere. The way in which it “helps” low water pressure is the adjustable stream, which any showerhead with an adjustable stream can do.
Those other showerheads without a turbine inside will do it better, of course.
@brainmist Where I could see it being useful maybe is if it were IFTTT compatible. Then, if you have a shower that takes a long time to heat up, you could link the temperature sensor on this to one of the Merkury smart bulbs that pop up here on meh all the time, and have the lightbulb in another room flash red when the shower is warmed up. Then, you can get your morning coffee started while you wait for the water to come to temp and not waste all the hot water because you will know when the shower is spraying hot.
Or maybe this would be more useful for DIY projects at $30. For instance, a bit of tweaking and this might be useful plumbed into a rain diverter on gutters feeding into a rain barrel to measure how many gallons of water are going into your rain barrel. Maybe this uses the same generic bluetooth drivers lots of stuff uses, so that it would link up to one of those generic bluetooth apps like Tuya(used for the Merkury smart bulbs on here in the past), and could be plumbed into a flow measurement project of some sort other than shower use.
I have seen little inline plumbing powered fittings on Ali express that could probably do the power generation part of this equation for some project though, for cheaper, so it is tempting but not sure if I am biting or not. I just had my shower head break a few weeks ago, and shelled out $70 for a new one(with magnetic sprayer and two showerheads), or else I would totally have bought this to replace the cracked ring on the one that just went bad(I was using some alien tape stuff I bought here on Meh though to fix that thing in a mediocre way though at least!)
I do find it funny that even in liquidation, the regular flow head sells for more than the water saver. The flow restrictors of the latter model would likely have a slightly higher BOM cost. Does the manufacturer still have some say on the pricing even in closeout to incentivize buying the water saver model even if neither is insanely overpriced anymore?
@ciabelle We have about 3x the amount of 1.8GPM units and believe the 2.5GPM is more desirable, but it also lacks a neutral color option like the “moon” we have here on Meh
I used to have a Shower Massage back in the day when those were a thing. I left it in my old apartment when I moved out. I have regretted that decision ever since.
@tricityladytn They’re easy to come by, Walmart sells a selection of them. That’s where I got my current one, after the previous one ended up clogged from hard water deposits. I also got a 10ft hose after the hose that came with it burst. I find the extra length quite useful. The reason it burst is because my water pressure is extremely high. It’s awesome in many ways, but it is hard on stuff like hoses.
Pro tip: this would be a good use for your old phone that’s been hanging around that you don’t know what to do with. Using that paired to your Bluetooth shower head means you could turn off the Wi-Fi and everything else and not have to worry about losing the app when it inevitably goes tits up because it’s no longer available.
This needs to go into the pile of tra…er…“recyclables” next to the low flow toilet that you have to flush 3 times to get rid of your “morning constitutional.”
@TheDagda I have low flow toilets that work really well but I spent many hours watching videos of miso, which looks disturbing authentic, being flushed before choosing…

That sell in December
I can’t be arsed to count nozzels, meh. I ask you, which of your pictures are correct?

@therealjrn That’s a good question – I would assume the 2nd since it seems most consistent with the number of nozzles shown on their site and Amazon.
Hai @troy, that’s what I surmised as well. Thanks!
@therealjrn “29 individual spray nozzles” are claimed in the specs-text. I wouldn’t have known if you hadn’t asked the question.

@alacrity why can’t the sell something like this!
@alacrity @mycya4me We’ll always have shower beer.
@alacrity Y’know.
There used to be a shower-spraying device that would spray cleaner to reduce water deposits.
And the cleaner was loaded into a bottle you just popped into the sprayer.
It didn’t really catch on. I think it didn’t work that well. But it seemed like a neat idea (so of course I have one).
And there is nothing to stop a person rinsing the heck out of everything, loading up the bottle with margarita, and taking a margarita shower.

I wonder how many will try to program the shower head while in the shower?
HAL is in control of my cleanliness now?

@brainmist I don’t think you can change the actual water temperature with the app, just the range where it notifies you. Same with the water volume.

@brainmist I’ve always been disappointed every time I’ve seen a light-up shower head, that turns out to take batteries…
But yeah, I don’t need it to tell me the water is too hot, I have nerve receptors for that.
@brainmist @kuoh There was an app-controlled shower system that could set the temperature and more-or-less keep it there, but it’s not in the shower head. @kuoh yup, it seems to just be a notification. And um. I have my own bio sensors for that.
Although it does occur to me now that, should someone have temp sensor issues, this might be helpful.

@brainmist @smerk85
As one does in the mehverse.
I don’t hate the concept of a shower head that can measure water temperature but this should have been an LCD display instead of Bluetooth and an app.
@brennyn That’s because Hai wants to sell you the waterproof smartphone case as well.

So…Can I change the setting while my wife is showering…So she can have one of those “satisfying” showers??
I used to have a Shower Massage back in the day when those were a thing. I left it in my old apartment when I moved out. I have regretted that decision ever since.
@tricityladytn Oh, trust me, they are still a thing. Maybe not “Shower Massage” brand, but they come up regularly here and on Woot.

DIPLOMAT! RAT-A-TAT! FAT CAT! AWESOME!
@KevinS10 @tricityladytn
Did you try soaking it in vinegar first?
Look over on Sidedeal, a little price difference
@joe645 They mention that’s the 2.5GPM version in the meh description…
/showme HAL 9000 as a shower head locking the shower door so the victim can’t escape scalding water
@mediocrebot phew. I thought that might be too violent and you were going to tell me you’re afraid you can’t do that.
@mediocrebot @OnionSoup This is how it starts!

@zaphod9977 I’m not in the Executive Branch.
¯_(ツ)_/¯
Persimmon you say . . . close you say?
no.
Perfect for when you want the CIA to spy on you even while in the shower.
@Wollyhop “Alexa, play my music jams.”
How did she hear her name unless she’s always listening!
