google workspace
6Any chance someone could help me set it up?
I’ve been working on this for two days and I’m totally lost about DNS and nameservers.
Gmail is doing away with pop3, forwarding mail is just weird and, even though he’s probably retiring next year, he still needs to get his mail and be able to respond (he’s not technically inclined in the least).
It’s a mess.
Thanks. Things have just been pretty weird around here for a couple of years. Health, work, critters…

Admittedly, I did VERY little research, but I, too, have been meaning to set up my personal domain in a google workspace for emails and such. No luck so far, but I haven’t even picked a webhost to point traffic to, either. Just have a few domains on porkbun currently.
@ExtraMedium I have our domains on ace-host.net.
Usually they’re pretty good at helping, but not this weekend.
Would be important to know which functionality you’re actually trying to replace. I don’t know why POP3 being retired would require any of the stuff you’re talking about. If the user currently fetches mail from Gmail with a POP3 client, change to an IMAP client. If the user currently fetches mail from another account using the now-retired ‘Check mail from other accounts’ tool, configure forwarding on the other account.
@Aspirant_Fool I do have the forwarding configured, but occasionally the “reply to” option sends the mail back to me.
I can deal with that at the time I reply, but for my husband’s company, well, let’s just say, he still has problems moving photos off of the memory card.
He doesn’t always pay attention and I’ll catch it hours later. I’m trying to make it as trouble free as possible for him. Which is why I’m working on my own email first.
@Aspirant_Fool Also, one of the problems is the massive amount of old email he has. He uses that like a file cabinet. When a previous customer has a question, he can just pull up the old email (we have a lifetime warranty on our product) to find out when it was originally ordered when there’s a problem. It seems like it would be pretty easy to just move all that data to the Google Workspace.
Since it’s kind of working now, I guess we can just get along until I figure something else out.
@lisaviolet I may understand a little better now: My guess based on what you’ve said is that the situation is something like this:
If that’s all accurate, then the next question is: You mentioned you have hosting via ace-host.net. Are they also your domain registrar? I.e., are you paying anyone else for domain renewals, like GoDaddy, or Cloudflare, or Namecheap, or any other registrar? Or is ace-host the only company you currently pay for anything domain/email related?
What you’re trying to do by setting up workspace would mean that ace-host would no longer be providing mail hosting services for you, instead Google would provide those services. You might also have websites or similar hosted by ace-host, and those could continue. If ace-host controls your domain in addition to your hosting, you’ll need to contact them for assistance in configuring the DNS records required to move mail to Gmail. They likely won’t be thrilled about helping you, as it means you won’t be paying them for email hosting anymore. If ace-host doesn’t control your domain and instead you’re paying for that separately through some registrar, that registrar is who you would contact for assistance in updating the DNS records as required for Google Workspace to take over mail hosting.
@Aspirant_Fool Exactly.
Right now I’m in the process of validating my whois for my little account. It’s a problem because I started the domain (on GoDaddy) back in the 90s when I had a post office box and a little online company and a different phone number.
I never changed any of the information. I’d pay for the domain when I got an email that it needed to be renewed. I’m regretting that I didn’t do my due diligence at the time. Yesterday afternoon with a call to GoDaddy I set up the 2f login function and have to wait for 24 hours until I can edit the information. (I hate having to use the cellphone.)
There’s a string of code that needs to be inserted into the DNS area and this is where I’m hitting the wall. I know the only thing I need to change at Ace-host.net is the MX record, but I can’t do anything with Workspace until I can access the DNS record to insert the code to prove I own the domain. Which I’ve had since the mid 90s.
Sigh…first world problems.
@lisaviolet It sounds like you’re on the right track, the only thing that seems a little off here is the bit about the MX record at ace-host. The MX record is one of several types of DNS records, and those should all be managed on the GoDaddy side, unless you have the GoDaddy side configured to use name servers belonging to ace-host. In that case, you either:
Usually the code to prove you own the domain gets inserted in a TXT record, which should be something ace-host will let you add if they have a DNS control panel for your domain. However, my preference would be to take control of the domain registration and DNS via GoDaddy, and keep ace-host only for hosting. While it might be more convenient in some respects to let the hosting provider also handle the DNS, you’re effectively moving away from ace-host being your sole provider, so I think it’d be to your benefit to establish your ownership and control on the GoDaddy side, as that’ll ensure your domain can’t be held hostage/‘accidentally’ affected by service changes if/when you terminate mail hosting through ace-host.
While my host support was useless, I found the information I wanted on Google.
There’s a “Zone Editor” in the cPanel and I was able to add the code and my domain is verified.
It shouldn’t have been this difficult. Support should have said “this is where to do this”. (I did search their knowledge base before placing a ticket for help.)
@lisaviolet I have no idea what you are talking about, but it’s nice to see you again.
@Barney Aw, thanks. I’ve been doing more lurking than posting on social media the past year or so.
Seems to take more energy to join in than it used to.
I’m glad you’re still around.
All done with the test account! Surprising how quickly it went, once I was able to get the verification done.
If anyone decides to jump in and needs help, I can try.
The business account should go very smoothly.
A quick warning if you decide to go this way.
Do not add users to the account. You will be charged for each user. Set up alternate emails.
Everything will go to the main email account, but filters will take care of that.
I’m glad I caught it before I started getting charged.
I’d rather be washing windows in the wind and rain than this shit.
I never really liked Gmail. the only reason I have one, well it is one of my Throw away one, also the one linked to YouTube. I also never had a AOL email, I had our grown AOL when it came out!
@lisaviolet all set or still need help?
@LJeAYsy4LoqxEC Well, yes, kinda.
I cannot send an invoice through Quickbooks to Gmail without some sort of MFA. I will be sending using an alias. It will not send at all.
I ordered 2 Yubikeys, one basic, one more functional. One for my husband to leave attached to his computer, one for me that I’ll use on the PC and the laptop. From what I read, this MFA will be needed to access the email which is why the Yubikey for him.
So, right now, I’m not sending any invoices. Nice, right?
There is one login. There is one password. One would expect there would only be one MFA code.
So, how does that work with two Yubikeys?
Sorry, I’m such a dolt on this, but it’s way out of my pay grade, which is a can of Diet Coke and a handful of peanut butter filled pretzels.
Thanks for your offer of help.
@LJeAYsy4LoqxEC It looks like I have it sorted.
Thanks.
