@gnext2 I had to listen to the songs to recognize them. I put Spotify on random for the top lists sometimes and that's the only reason I know them at all (and why I don't know the names/artists/albums). As long as I keep doing that I can keep up with the kids these days.
@gnext2 I'm 31 also but only knew 17 of them. I tend to stick to the alt rock and electronic channels on my satellite radio, though, and I've never really been on top of pop music anyway.
@looseneck Sirius has a kick ass new channel, Drive Radio. It's currently on channel 147, but moves to 18 next week. I've been stuck in the 60's on 6 through 80's on 8, but the new channel has exposed me to a bunch of new stuff. I love it.
Four, I do believe. Of course, there's not really 100 songs on this list as "rap" doesn't qualify as a song, it qualifies as loud racket from someone who can't "sing."
@Pony I was shocked to find that I only know 3 as well! And one of them I only know because my wife played it last night and told me to listen (which I didn't do.. but I caught the name). My kids love Uptown Funk.. and I forget the other one I knew.. lol.. But I figured that with as much crap as my wife plays, I would know at least a handful!
That's what I get for only listening to sports talk and political talk.. lol
@thismyusername That was a good one, but all pale next to the Joseph Gordon Levitt and Stephen Merchant one. And Cruise is getting even creepier looking, if that were possible.
Precisely three, though I scanned it pretty quickly, so let's give it a potential three-five. One of these (Shake It Off) was because of meh. This is weird to me.
@KDemo There was also one called "Uma Thurman" that had me doing a double-take. Followed by an eye-roll.
I think the kids these days have officially run out of creative titles (i.e. words that they know) for their "music".
After all, one of the songs was named, "Bitch Better Have My Money".
Maybe it would help if they took a lesson from the old-school masters of creativity, dropped some acid, and tried to work words like "Octopus" and "Submarine" and "Truffle" into the song title. And preferably without using them all as euphemisms for genitalia.
First I googled the Billboard 100 and went to the website and it froze my browser. I shut it down and opened it up again after closing some tabs. I didn't see one Spanish song on the list, and my operating system is in English, but all over the page I got Coors light ads in Spanish. I figure if Billboard can't figure out how to create a decent web page that can figure out who is using it, and how not to freeze my powerful and up to date computer, how can I trust them to know what people are really listening to. The Meh page say "Who's buying this crap" Really, can Billboard tell us, "Who's listening to this crap?"
I stopped about halfway down the list after not recognizing shit, though I imagine if I actually listened to em I'd go "ooooooh, that song". I'm completely useless when it comes to naming musicians, or actors, or names of streets. You want me to tell you how to get somewhere then you better be prepared to turn at a big tree.
Instead of the last answer being "none of them", how about "some, but good music never makes the charts". Because I recognize them, but that doesn't mean I think they're good.
@condega5 it froze my browser too. All those charts jamming up my mac w/ music I never knew I didn't want to listen to.
ps I recognized 1, and only because you would have to be in a coma not to have heard Taylor Swift "shaking it off" this summer. I blame the internet and music streaming and @mfladd for my ignorance. Because of all that, I don't listen to the radio anymore. I'm sure if I did I would be one of the cool kids. Or not. sigh.
@kadagan They do, but you are right it's coming to that time of year when I will probably only be listening to NFL and fantasy sports network (I had to upgrade for that one, but it is worth it.)
There really should be another option. Pretty much all except one genre, which was for me Country. I still knew who 95% of the artists were country is just not my everyday go to music.
Well, Billboard's website was the first few hits, and it said I had to subscribe to view the Hot 100, so nogo on that. Didn't recognize the top 3, which were visible. Also, don't care that I don't know them. As long as I can find good music that I like to listen to, I don't care what "the kids" are listening to. Lately, it has been traditional Irish songs (like the traditional Sam Hall).
The number of artists whose names I recognized is not much more than the number of songs I recognized by name. And only a couple of songs I even heard before.
Soon figured out I didn't know any of the songs. So counted names I recognized instead. Lets just say I had enough fingers to count on without needing extra hands.
@ChadP Sad part was that a year ago there was a song on the chart called "Weekend" at the same time the Weeknd were also on the chart. It was confusing to listen to on Hits1 (go satellite or don't, I don't judge)
I recognized seven songs. Two songs out of the top ten. Also, I just want to point out that the #7 & #8 positions are held by an artist named "Fetty Wap" and one of the songs is called "Trap Queen."
The music I hear influences me, not sales numbers.
I just don't care if I'm hip. I'm middle aged and I listen to shit I like, and every now and then I find new artists that are great. Jason Isbell has been on my radar a long time and is now getting mainstream appeal and financial success. Houndmouth is a great Americana band that I love too. Others I know only because they've creeped into the current pop culture lexicon, and most are sophomoric. Taylor Swift? I don't even like just LOOKING at her anymore. She could make me a sammy tho.
@irishbyblood Do you ever find a band that is so perfect that you realize you may have found that band that will be your best band for the rest of your life? Pandora showed me that band and I fear the day they stop releasing albums. (IAMX)
@darkzrobe I do...I have, but I don't expect them, or he or she to be there for the rest of my life. Like love, it can be perfect at first. But then, repetition can reveal that it's not really all that, at that moment. But it once was, and I respect the positive influence it had on me. As we age and allegedly mature, we change. The artists do too, but rarely in the same way or at the same times.
@irishbyblood I was that way at first, but every new album that came out was even better than the one before... And the old ones have gotten even better the more I listen to them. I hope I find something new... But at the same time I am content knowing I found what I found.
@Teripie ...and I'm completely good with that. When they're not with me in the vehicle I listen to podcasts, mostly news. I would be completely fine with not knowing any pop music.
When I was a kid, I read that some executives of Pepsi had never heard of Michael Jackson before they signed him to be a spokesperson. I vowed that I would never grow up to be so musically antiquated. I regret to inform my younger self that yes, you did.
I may have known more had I listened to them, but just going by song names that I recognized, there were maybe 3-4 at the most. I primarily listen to the Spectrum on Sirius so I guess I need to give them credit for recognizing any of them. I did know more artists than songs.
My teenage son is often embarrassed or just amused by the music I love. I've introduced him to bluegrass, Johnny Cash, Metallica, and everything in between (except for any country music from the last 20 plus years). But what really kills him is the rap/hip hop. He can't wrap his head around mom losing her mind when she hears Cypress Hill or Public Enemy. But that's just one type of music that my generation grew up with.
I've realized I just don't have a great outlet for consuming popular culture. I have nothing against it, but I have higher priorities for my expenditures. Spotify is probably my safest avenue, but the UI is so loathsome that I spend less and less time in it. I realized the AM station I pick up the Nats on eventually turns to music, and I've learned a thing or two that way, but it's not necessarily mainstream stuff when I Shazam something and it tells me I'm only the second person to do so. Anyway, TL;DR, I'm out of the loop and it kind of bums me out.
I'm 31 so I am still pretty on top of things but I am worried soon I will be clueless on things like this.
@gnext2 Don't worry, when the moment comes, it feels more like a blissful relief.
@gnext2 I know only 2. I'm an old and listen to Hair Band and 80s on Sirius almost exclusively.
@looseneck Sirius has a kick ass new channel, Drive Radio. It's currently on channel 147, but moves to 18 next week. I've been stuck in the 60's on 6 through 80's on 8, but the new channel has exposed me to a bunch of new stuff. I love it.
@Teripie I will check it out this afternoon - thanks! I loved billy joel radio a few minths ago. It was a nice break
@gnext2 I'll let you know what happens at 32 next month so you can prepare
@gnext2 I'm 25 and don't recognize any of the songs. But I'm a big metalhead so that's to be expected.
Four, I do believe. Of course, there's not really 100 songs on this list as "rap" doesn't qualify as a song, it qualifies as loud racket from someone who can't "sing."
@juststephen I'll be sure to stay off your lawn.
@brhfl I won't. I'm gonna poop on his lawn!
@WINTERMUTE or you could just play some average rap on his lawn.... same thing.
Three. I hate two of them, and barely tolerate the third.
@Pony that's exactly how i feel.
That's what I get for only listening to sports talk and political talk.. lol
Four. I'm in my late twenties and only recognize four of them.
Darn kids need to get off my lawn.
@thismyusername That was a good one, but all pale next to the Joseph Gordon Levitt and Stephen Merchant one. And Cruise is getting even creepier looking, if that were possible.
@jaremelz well looking over the charts I felt like this:
until I came across "I can't feel my face" by "the weekend" to which I still say:
but damn that is a catchy song with funny lyrics....
Yea Tom is a bit odd, but the movies are pretty good fun. I blame L Ron.
@thismyusername Oh, he creeps me right the hell out, but I've loved so many of his movies. It all started for me with Legend.
Although I grew up loving Tom, I think he has cheek implants....he just looks odd!!!
Only 7. All the others must be rap or country or country-rap.
This is a joke poll, right? Does anyone even care about the Billboard Hot 100 any more?
I recognized about 20 of them. I feel less old than expected.
@Thumperchick Less than 30 for me. I'm a totally channel surfer and like a large variety of music, but most of that list was lost on me.
Precisely three, though I scanned it pretty quickly, so let's give it a potential three-five. One of these (Shake It Off) was because of meh. This is weird to me.
What happened to the bullets?
There's a song called Marvin Gaye? And one called John Cougar? Is this reverse day?
The list of shows I've seen is longer than that list, but it's depressing not to recognize much that's current.
@KDemo There was also one called "Uma Thurman" that had me doing a double-take.
Followed by an eye-roll.
I think the kids these days have officially run out of creative titles (i.e. words that they know) for their "music".

@pepsiwine i take it you don't know about the horrible truffle song.
@katylava LOVES the truffle song.
@katylava Ignorance is bliss, I guess.
I didn't know about the "horrible truffle song"... until you mentioned it. So I googled it - Good grief!!
I don't consider myself a crotchety, old, conservative, prude by any stretch, but that particular song is just.... unnecessary.
@pepsiwine @katylava @hollboll I am so excited to google this when I get home.
@brhfl make sure you urban dictionary truffle butter too.
@hollboll Sure why not, this sounds like it's shaping up to be a great way to spend an evening.
@brhfl So........?
@hollboll
@hollboll So........ yeah, that was depressing.

@nogoodwithnames Just as your username says.

@ceagee I am sending you my poor taste in music since I knew 90% of the Top 50. I blame Sirius Satellite Radio!
@mfladd They play music on Sirius?? I only ever listened to NFL radio, and occasionally ESPN radio..
@Cynamon I didn't know rap/R&B. Country I know a couple, and yeah I could recognize the artists. We are very alike!
How about "I don't even want to Google the hot 100 chart because it might make billboard think one more person cares"?
I must be getting old, too.
Well, Billboard's website was the first few hits, and it said I had to subscribe to view the Hot 100, so nogo on that. Didn't recognize the top 3, which were visible. 25 - but I have heard of at least 3/4 of the artists - just not that song at that moment. So I've got that going for me heading into the Weeknd
@oppodude i see what you did there.
@ChadP Sad part was that a year ago there was a song on the chart called "Weekend" at the same time the Weeknd were also on the chart. It was confusing to listen to on Hits1 (go satellite or don't, I don't judge)

@Willijs3 wrong chart.
Does this one do it for you? http://www.billboard.com/charts/hard-rock-albums
@Willijs3
@caffeine_dude Unfortunately, no. I recognize the artists, but not the songs. Maybe I AM out of touch. This one is right up my alley: http://www.billboard.com/charts/alternative-songs
@Willijs3 they are albums, so still hope!
@The_Baron I still use that saying.
The music I hear influences me, not sales numbers.
I just don't care if I'm hip. I'm middle aged and I listen to shit I like, and every now and then I find new artists that are great. I have heard of a couple of those songs, but never actually heard them. I only recognized a handful of artists too.
I've been out of the "popular" music loop for a very long time.
I know most of them, but I cheat - I have teenage kids.
@smyle When that last kid moves out you'll be surprised how quickly you'll become unfamiliar with what's new and hot in music.
@Teripie ...and I'm completely good with that. When they're not with me in the vehicle I listen to podcasts, mostly news. I would be completely fine with not knowing any pop music.
I recognized one because @ChadP played it recently... I think to make fun of it? The "I can't feel my face" one...
@katylava word.
@katylava no @ChadP legit likes that song, I was the one making fun of it the whole time like a jerk. I still hate it though.
When I was a kid, I read that some executives of Pepsi had never heard of Michael Jackson before they signed him to be a spokesperson. I vowed that I would never grow up to be so musically antiquated. I regret to inform my younger self that yes, you did.
@Trillian I think a good chunk of us did that.
@Trillian Isn't he a basketball player? :p
I may have known more had I listened to them, but just going by song names that I recognized, there were maybe 3-4 at the most. I primarily listen to the Spectrum on Sirius so I guess I need to give them credit for recognizing any of them. I did know more artists than songs.

None, but I have herd of a few of the artists on it. I think 9 of the artists have names I have heard before.
