Years ago, I was told that my Secret Santa gift was being held at the guard desk, and that I would have to wait until I was ready to go home to retrieve it. It ended up being a vintage port (I have a good idea of what they paid for it, and they went WAY over the $20 limit). Yes, of course it was wonderful. I love Port, and it was one of the best gifts ever.
@f00l I like Peter Wellington, and Wellington wines, very much. I even bought the recent Wellington Port offerings (and one of the White Ports will probably be used as a gift, unless it turns out that I like it, in which case, I’m keeping them both). The thing is (and he and I had conversations about this), Portugal was not as quick to protect the name of Port (and Porto) as France was to protect Champagne. This means that many items are grandfathered in (in the US, and elsewhere), but honestly, Port comes from PORTUGAL. Not California, not Washington, not even Spain.
These Wellington Ports sold for about $15 per bottle. In its day, it sold for a bit more. The vintage Porto I mentioned above probably sold (circa 2005) for about $130 or so. It’s good to have friends that love you…
Actually, there’s a nice Taylor Fladgate about halfway down the page you could buy me.
Please note, that one’s not a Vintage, but it is very tasty. I’m going to resist it, but it’s hard. I just have so much wine already headed to my house that I can’t have more. I’m not sure where I’m going to put the ones that are already on the way.
As long as I’m entertaining myself, here’s a great link directly from Taylor Fladgate.
@Shrdlu I like Port a lot, too, but I’m not particularly selective about it. I like it most when stuck indoors due to crummy weather. I guess you could say it’s “any Port in a storm” for me.

@Shrdlu
This I knew. Read a few books on wine/spirits/vineyards/distilling a few decades back.
So I know a few odd things l, but I can’t put it all together into any sort of real knowledge.
For instance, that most “classic grape varietals” grown in the US are grown on grafted vines, due to some New World desease? Or something?
I may have it all confused.
Am still envious.
And thanks.
Thou I have no idea when I might drink what I already have, since I drink but rarely.
(No civilized existence to be seen around here. No way. )

@Shrdlu
PS I always loved the idea that European aristocracy used to purchase cases for their grandchildren.
Not ready to drink till then.
But that world of purchasers is gone now, and wines aren’t made that way for that market any more. We’re all in a hurry now.

My favorite port is a brand called starboard. I kid you not starboard port is a thing and delicious particularly paired with a nice Dubliner cheese.

How is the 12 Days of Christmas Andy-style not on the list?
