Goat Day #24: Let's get Saucy
8No, not in that kind of way. I’m talking about sauces. Recently, we got a Raising Canes. Never heard of it before that, but I guess a bunch of people have, because when they opened there were cars lined up for hours.
Anyways, I’ve been there a few times since then, and they have some fantastic dipping sauce. Good for both fries, and their tenders. As far as dipping sauces goes, it just knocked off Chick-Fil-A for my favorite universal dunking sauce.
Another one of my favorites is like a sweet and spicy asian sauce for bbq wings.
Of all the sauces (dipping, pasta, bbq etc), what’s your favorite? Are you a sweet and sour person, or a flaming hot person? Do you make anything at home? Do you have a recipe to share? What do you use it on, and what do you refuse to sauce?
If I cook steak, I don’t sauce it. If somebody else cooks steak (improperly), sometimes I have to. Sorry cows.

Mustard (of most types) is my dipping sauce of choice.
We got our Canes a long time ago. I think they are just meh. Would go to Chik-Fil-A any day of the week (except Sunday) over Canes.
@jst1ofknd So far I’ve had two great and two bad overall experiences at Canes. Chick Fil A is good food, great service, and consistent. Canes at it’s best has been way better, but for reliability I’d take Chick Fil A because I’ve never had bad stuff from there. Plus they always send me free rewards.
@jst1ofknd @lichme At Chick fil A the best sauce is their barbecue sauce on the waffle fries. That is what winning tastes like.
Chocolate sauce. It’s not just for breakfast anymore.
@heartny I could go for some chocolate gravy over some hot butter biscuits right about now.

@heartny @tnhillbillygal I’m not judging you but…

I have a thing for the datil pepper hot sauce at Firehouse subs. Hot sauce is good in general, my favorites being Bourque’s, Crystal, Louisiana, or Tabasco.
Cane’s is solid, although I really believe it’s just mayo, ketchup, black pepper and a dash of Worcestershire.
Sauces I really like that are not all-purpose contenders are Sriracha, hoisin, potsticker sauce. That all those are for Asian foods is just coincidence. Sriracha is close to an all-purpose sauce, though.
Can’t forget Sweet Baby Ray’s. For grocery store BBQ sauce they make a good product.
@lichme for your Asian wing sauce are you talking about Thai sweet chili sauce? There are probably three different bottles of that in my kitchen right now, it’s one of my wife’s favorites.
And you’re absolutely right, good steak needs no sauce. I did some sous vide ribeyes last weekend and my wife was all excited to find a bottle of A-1 (no idea why we had it). I told her this steak wouldn’t need it but she said she always wants it on her steak. I was very proud during the meal when she told me the steak was better without the A-1.
@djslack Indeed I am. That stuff is great. I like it especially on those meatballs you get from the asian store. The ones that look like this:
@lichme I never considered that you could get the meatballs from pho without the pho! At least that’s what those look like. That might ruin me, I might need to pretend I never knew that.
@djslack Indeed they are. I normally $4.50 a bag for the good ones here.
I have a weakness for anything with Buffalo sauce on it (except wings, because I don’t do wings).
My other favorite is Chipotle Tabasco.
@TheFLP Chipotle Tabasco is legit. I got a three pack (original, chipotle, and jalapeno) and the chipotle bottle is the emptiest, although that’s partially because I have several red pepper alternatives to straight Tabasco at any given time.
@djslack @TheFLP Green tabasco is my standard go-to…after that the chipotle…and if you can find the sweet & spicy tabasco try it!..thats a favorite but hard to find in stores…even in louisiana
I’m a simple man with simple tastes. Ranch is my jam. Nice and thick buttermilk ranch with some fresh veggies. Though, I admit, for me the veggies are really just a vessel to transport ranch from the bowl to my face.
@ruouttaurmind I like avacado ranch, buttermilk ranch, and cucumber ranch.
@ruouttaurmind we are trying to teach our teen son that you have to pretend to be eating something solid you put things on, you aren’t supposed to eat butter or sour cream by the spoonful right out of the container. It’s an uphill battle.
@mollama My mom’s second husband used to eat Miracle Whip by the spoonful. Gack. Worse still, his breakfast usually consisted of 2 or 3 thick slices of Velveeta, a generous slab of braunschweiger and several spoonfuls of Miracle Whip. (any guesses what facilitated his passing?)
@ruouttaurmind I’m grossed out.
The only time I’ll eat sushi is if it’s drenched in spicy mayo.
I am a Sriracha addict. I even have at least 5 Sriracha shirts. Honey mustard would be my second go-to. Chinese Hot Oil would be the third if that counts as a sauce.

Favorite fast food sauce is definitely the Chick-Fil-A sauce. My go-to at home for something quick and easy is a buffalo/ranch mix. Far and away, the best buffalo sauce to me is this stuff…
@cinoclav I use that stuff when i make fried chicken. Can be hard to find here though.
@lichme Walmart is my usual spot to find it. Most of the big markets around here (Philly area) carry it too. Really has great flavor for a mass produced sauce.
Sauces are gross, in general. Some hot sauces are OK.
Dale’s Seasoning is really good, and I use it all the time. It’s not really a sauce, though. It’s closer to a marinade, but not actually one of those, either.
NoSauce November.
First. When we go to Las Vegas we always stop at 2 fast food places - Raising Canes and In-and-Out. If I get the sandwich at Canes I get the sauce on the side so I have more of it.
Second. I recently made an avocado crema that I would eat on anything. I’m at work but I’ll try to remember to post the recipe when I get home.
@jksquared oh yes, do! That sounds good!!
@jksquared I have never seen, or been to an In-or-Out. I want to try one.
@jksquared @mfladd You don’t have to pick, you get both In and out.
I now blame the goat for putting Cane’s into my head…so that’s lunch…box combo…no slaw…extra toast…lemonade…done and done
@amehzinggrace That was my order last night, except it was extra fries. I do like me some slaw, but it’s gone in a bite or two so I find more value with the fries.
Also: you’re welcome
@amehzinggrace @lichme another Cane’s secret: the toast is Sunbeam BBQ Bread. You can buy a loaf it at the grocery store. Butter and grill one side.
I eat the toast like dessert when I have Cane’s, by itself after everything else.
@amehzinggrace I mean… did anyone check to see if @lichme worked for Cane’s?
Nice it’s a real toss up for Raising Canes or Chi-fil-a for me. My usual go to is mayo or mayo-sriracha-pepper mix. Outside of that try something like this sometime. That being said the Cane’s sauce is really good.
@Targaryen
Which one do you normally pick?
@lichme Fixed it.
ranch, with some Frank’s Red Hot mixed in. it’s my own personal spicy ranch!!

Well that one was unexpected. I was afraid I’d get X rated.
@Kidsandliz I looked at the giphy code yesterday, X rated is highly unlikely due to the filters that are being used.
Not much love for BBQ sauce? I’m a fan of Stubbs Original for store bought, usually on pulled pork or chopped brisket sandwich. There is a LOT of great BBQ joints around here, and quite a few have memorable house-made sauces.

As far as spicy, Frank’s Red Hot Original or Cholula were my go-to, especially for jambalaya or chilaquiles. BUT on a recent scuba trip to Belize I discovered Maria Sharp’s Habanero Pepper Sauce (hot). Marie Sharp is the Bellikan (Belizean?) equivalent of our Tabasco - you find it everywhere in multiple flavors - but their secret ingredient is carrot pulp, providing a rich, semi-sweet foundation for many of their varieties. It’s my new favorite!
