Goat Day #17: You make me sick
8Not you, literally… but somebody did. Now I have a sore throat, a headache, I’m sneezing all the time, and just feel general unpleasantness.
The one good thing about being sick… is Pho. Yeah, sure, I could get it any time, and often do, but it’s my comfort food when I don’t feel like eating any solids. I’m a believer that if you eat Pho, and your nose doesn’t start running, you’re doing it wrong. If you haven’t had it, you should.
When you’re sick, what’s your go to food, or other comfort item that helps you get through it?

I’m pretty stuck on the old 7up and chicken noodle soup standby.
@Thumperchick Homemade, or canned?
@lichme Canned. I do make my own, but that’s a different thing for me.
Well how sick are we talking?
@PlacidPenguin Bad enough to stay home from work, not bad enough to see a Dr.
@lichme There is a really nasty atypical cold thing going around in more than one state. I got it and ended up with, eventually, pneumonia. While I have recovered significantly, I haven’t completely and am in my 4th week of this crap. Hope you didn’t get this and instead got something more short lived. Feel better.
I don’t think think I have a sick time food… I do love me some Thai food though…
@jst1ofknd I just discovered my love recently for pineapple curry, and I found a place that so far, has had amazing everything. Not a single bad item yet. 30 minute drive, but definitely worth it.
@lichme
I typically get Pad See Ew (not sure the spelling and too lazy to look it up) not because I’m afraid of trying anything else, but because I like it so much.
My favorite is when I have leftovers and then I add cheese to it. The guys at work call it Pad Cheese Ew.
@jst1ofknd That’s my go to order at 90% of places. I go with chicken+beef, 2 star spice level.
You talking about shredded cheese? That seems, odd, but I won’t judge.
@lichme
I must say that Irk captured my attitude toward cheese perfectly. I practice lactose tolerance.
@lichme
I do Pad See Ew with chicken level 5 spicy at the two good Thai places near my work.
Funny story. Another guy at work and I went to a Thai place for lunch once. We both ordered Pad See Ew. Him with beef and me with chicken. We had both gotten this exact thing there before and it was fine despite it not technically being on the menu. This time, however, they brought out two completely different dishes and they didn’t even care.
I’m not meaning to be racist, but the restaurant was recently bought by white people and you could tell it.
This oughta kill off any unwanted life in your system (and possibly a fair number of beneficial cells as well)
@nolrak So it’s pesticide for my body? Kills both the thrips, and the bees?
@lichme basically — at the very least, you won’t care about your illnesses after a few rounds
@mfladd I am right there with you on this one. Too bad I can’t taste anything right now.
@mfladd
I should come to your house and pretend that I’m sick.
@mfladd @PlacidPenguin Go to his house and likely you will end up leaving sick.
@Kidsandliz @mfladd
Then I could stay and eat more.
@mfladd @PlacidPenguin or you could just go to the grocery store and buy popsicles…and then you’d get to eat all of them yourself… just saying. I mean, being an adult means mom doesn’t tell you what you can or can not eat. Right?
@Kidsandliz
I don’t like shopping though.
Easier to just crash at/into @mfladd’s place.
@PlacidPenguin order out and have your groceries delivered then…
Vernor’s and vanilla ice cream float. Yes I am indeed from Michigan.
But I’m now in Florida so my goto ginger ale is Buffalo Rock ginger ale. This stuff makes Vernor’s taste like water.
Pho is a really good one, with hoisin, Sriracha, the chili sauce you have to use a spoon for, and the fresh jalapenos.
I also would get a wonton soup from the Chinese restaurant near my old house, a quart of it was like $3, and it was better than chicken noodle soup when I felt bad.
I remembered an old home remedy one day that my grandma used to make me gargle warm salt water if I had a sore throat. I thought about this and the pho thing one day when I felt a sore throat coming on, so I made a warm cup of crawfish boil and gargled with that. It was a little unpleasant, and my wife thought I was insane. But I must report satisfactory results–that sore throat was gone in a hurry.
@djslack I have 0 good chinese places near me. Only one in town, and it’s overpriced and not good at all.
@djslack I’ve tried the salt water gargle before with not much luck. 20 minute relief maybe.
@lichme I don’t think the crawfish boil gargle would be kind to a Midwestern palate, so don’t add cayenne to your salt water
Shame about the Chinese restaurant situation. We have enough that we could spare you one.
@djslack @lichme
What about drinking Tabasco straight from the bottle?
That’s my go-to under certain circumstances …

@f00l @lichme sure, if you want something milder
@djslack @lichme
Pei Wei Hot & Sour Soup, extra spicy

@compunaut I like my H&S soup with egg. Or just egg drop soup.
@mike808 I like egg drop soup as well; just not when I’m sick.
Chicken soup w/ bone broth. And hot tea. It’s almost the only time I have hot tea.
That pic of the pho looks like a chinese Tilapia farm.
Campbell’s Bean with Bacon soup.
Ramen noodles with lots of red pepper (chili pequin or Thai chili if you have it) and if I don’t feel too bad to mess with it, add a little meat or egg and vegetables.
Always seems to liquify whatever I need to get out of me.
The last time I was really really sick was stomach flu. I couldn’t even keep water down. Once I could finally eat something besides crackers and Gatorade, I asked for Tom Kha soup from the local Thai place.
With you on the pho - esp since I can’t stand chicken and noodle soup…
A cup of this stuff with ginger slices. Nice that I can find it at the local Asian Market.
When was the last time you saw a television news anchor lose their voice on air. A trick I learned long ago while in the business was to have a warm Coke handy to chug during the breaks. Usually cleans up the crud long enough to get through the segment and to the next break/chug.
@Mehrocco_Mole well considering that coke removes crud from around car battery terminals that it cleans up throat crud is not surprising… although it does make me wonder just what exactly that cleaning power does, in the long term, to us besides remove enamel from teeth. Good thing I hate the stuff.
