Go away winter
24I am done with you. We have had our Christmas and New Years, we have had our snow , shoveled together, had hot chocolate. But really today’s temperature has been unforgivable. You are too cold. I am dumping you. I want to have an affair with Spring. He is a sexy one and always brings me flowers. You bring me nothing but cold and ice.

Indeed!
/giphy “bad winter!”
what is this winter of which you speak?
@Cerridwyn it was in the lower 60’s today, that’s practically freezing.
@Cerridwyn @Ignorant Do either one of you want to post how it’s been here in SoCal these past few days?
@Cerridwyn @narfcake I had to go inside to cool down today.
@Ignorant @narfcake
State Highs for today

75 °F Palm Springs
75 °F Miramar MCAS

75 °F San Diego Montgomery

This is the best winter in Florida in a while. Please stick around.
Sssoooo cold
Still a favorite:
This could be a good day to charge up your Energizer Jump Starter. Just in case. I did.
I was OK with winter, until it started acting like winter.
We have had one day where the low approached 32 degrees and the high was 48, what winter? Even the weeds are blooming. Had to mow the other day
@nasman6 Y’know…I’m a pretty nice guy, but a statement like yours combined w/ the weather we’re experiencing (see below) and I think you are deserving of a politely-as-possible delivery of the not so coveted “Bite Me” award!
@nasman6 @tohar1

Tired if the cold 25mph winds.
Of which we will perhaps get more of this week.

You missed a chance to say ‘a fling with Spring’ and for that you will never be forgiven.
/giphy “fuck winter”
@f00l Right? These old bones can’t take much more of this cold weather.
Bah, humbug:
It’s going to be in the upper 50s tomorrow, but that doesn’t excuse the single-digit monstrosity that was Monday.
Sigh

@f00l
@f00l
I already thought that “polar vortex” sounded like impending doom, but seeing that is utterly terrifying.
problem solved.
@Kidsandliz no ice sailing is not sailing.
@CaptAmehrican Hmm wind powered with a sail…not sailing???
And I can tell you from first hand experience it is really cold (wind chill) when you do play with these boats. On the up side if you manage to flip one (for example hitting an ice ridge so you can go stern over bow if you are going fast enough), most of the force from landing on the ice is spread out over how far you slide (and hopefully not into open water).
@Kidsandliz it is fancy ice skating. Not a boat but a huge ice skate
@CaptAmehrican @Kidsandliz
Ice skates do not have a sail, while that obviously does. It looks like it’s trying hard to be a hang glider - it nearly flies
Brumation is not just bad CGI of Quidditch players riding brooms.
North Carolina swamp alligators freeze in swamp with noses above the ice

NOUN
@mike808
Just when you thought it was safe to walk on a frozen swamp — you trip over an alligator snout, whack your head on the ice, and die.
“Characterized by lethargy and a decrease in metabolic activity” sounds like me when I woke up this morning.
Sorry to hear: Looks like many of you won’t feel very warm for the next few.
Sympathies. : (

Ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch
Hey @carl669
Aren’t you in the Chicago area? Swearwords would seem most appropriate for the next few days.
@f00l
All I can say to that is “ugh.” Not very colorful, but winter isn’t colorful either.
Maybe @carl669 can provide appropriate verbiage when he thaws out … in March.
@f00l @TheFLP
fuckity fuck fuck damn shit!
yep. I’m in the Chicago area. it’s really gonna suck the next couple of days. if I die, avenge me.
I spent a memorable year in St. Paul once. Their low Tuesday night will be -30, windchill -53, wind gusts to 30 mph. The HIGH Wednesday will be -14. All in this mess have my sympathy.
@OldCatLady I’m just a state south of that, and our high (in southern Iowa) Wednesday is a whopping 5° higher than than St. Paul’s (-9). Our school district already called off school for Tuesday and Wednesday as of about 6pm Monday evening.
@OldCatLady I just got home from there (used to live there back in '75) couple days ago.
Meh, 3 more weeks and the temps start warming instead of cooling.
@cranky1950
Please be more cranky. You seem not fully warmed up to the task.
What? Is it cold outside or something?
: (
/giphy brrr cold
@f00l Wimp. You’re really blowing you cowgirl hottie image.

Around here (deep south) yesterday was full of apocalypse warnings, schools closed in advance of today where we were supposed to get not much more than a dusting of snow (they said 1- 2 inches of snow - umm folks did you forget with temps in the 50’s and 60’s for days on end the ground isn’t cold enough for snow to stick?)… and what do we have today? The news media is trying to recover their dignity by having people out on the almost completely dry roadways showing the few and far between UNfrozen puddles warning us to drive carefully because the roads might be wet in some areas!!! ROTFLMAO.
And then we had the other week where we had had so much rain that a bunch of days into that the rain lost its news media interest that the 2" of rain we got in a hour or so with winds gusting to 40mph with people hydroplaning left and right barely got mentioned.
Seriously though my sympathies to those of you having to stand around in sub zero temps waiting for busses and trains.
@Kidsandliz I love it when the grass and barns are covered with snow and the roads are perfectly clear.
@cranky1950 yes that looks pretty.
Well fuckity fuck. To quote @carl669
@f00l
fuckity fuck indeed.
@carl669 @f00l Time to slice open your tauntaun for the night!
Stay warm!
I was watching my bird cam in Manitouwage, Ont yesterday am and the ambient temp was -53. That is without the windchill factor! I’ve been watching that cam for years and have never seen that low of a temp.
@lseeber Link please?
@MoonMoonDog Cornell Lab Bird Cams
@lseeber @MoonMoonDog
When I see birds on really cold days, I often wonder, what with their small bodies and the high metabolic demands of flying, how they retain body heat and survive the conditions.
I guess down and feathers must be really great insulation!
/image feathers
@f00l @MoonMoonDog Actually, that same site has an article on it that I read last week. I was wondering how their little legs don’t freeze and snap off. It explains how they regulate their body temp differently for different parts. Really quite interesting. Also… they explained why some birds, while sitting in the winter, look extra fat… they ‘fluff’ their feathers and put a layer of air between them to insulate.
Ok. Wed morning.
Hey “fuckity fuck” @carl669! You ok? Is your supply of hot-burning profanity holding out?
Hey everyone in the frozen-beyond-frozen regions: please report in!
I hear the East Coast is happily anticipating being next. Right?
/giphy you’re next
@f00l
This morning’s wind chill
@f00l
Here is a map of the coldest temps ever recorded in each US state.
Even Florida has seen temps below zero, prob in the panhandle, I guess?
Montana and Alaska “win”.
@f00l The best I have done is -61 one night when we were camping (in an igloo so not nearly so cold inside but then you have a new problem - keeping the air holes open).
@f00l @Kidsandliz
mother of fucking polar bear penguins!
Hey all of you who are test subjects in the American Freezer Project - stay warm.
Woke up this mornin’
W T F, @carl669 ?
Wind chill:
TWENTY. FOUR. BELOW.
If only there was someone to blame…
Fark!
