Glasses to fix color blindness
2We recently confirmed that my sons both have some level of color blindness (via online test). We trust this because girl, the wife, and I all passed it with flying colors.
I’ve heard of glasses for this. I’ve done some checking and there are some that cost a whole lot (upwards of $200 easily) and some that don’t.
I am thinking of getting this pair
Pilestone GM-3 Color Blind Corrective Glasses for Red-Green Blindness (Color Blind Glasses)-Clip on, Same Lenses as GM-2 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0756TKMGS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_5IttCbR21D294
Does anyone have any experience with these or similar?

This might be a stupid question but how are these any different from a red tinted lens? They’ll turn everything red. The chroma glasses don’t do that. They have a test on their site that your sons can take to see if they would be helpful to them at all.

@RiotDemon
I was wondering that myself. That’s part of the reason I haven’t purchased them yet.
The other ones are super expensive. I would consider those if I knew for sure they would work.
@jst1ofknd if you look at the question and answer section on the red glasses, pretty much everybody says that they don’t work.
Have them take the test on the enchroma website. At the end, even if you aren’t colorblind, they will tell you that glasses may help you. So be aware of that.
@jst1ofknd If you are thinking of spending $200+ a kid on these kinds of glasses maybe take at least one kid to the eye doctor and ask?
@jst1ofknd @Kidsandliz you don’t need a doctor to tell you if you’re color blind. The glasses are proven to help, not really necessary though.
@jst1ofknd @RiotDemon Yes I realize you don’t need that, but they may have a bette idea about which ones are actually effective and which ones are not; they may know more of the science behind subtle differences between them (especially if there are competing ones with different patents…).

I actually have already read the first article all the way and read and lost interest in the second one.
I find the first article interesting. They asked for volunteers and got 200 volunteers. It then sounds like they hand picked 49 people that the glasses didn’t work for and ignored the 151 other people they may have worked for. At least that’s the way it sounds to me…
@Kidsandliz @RiotDemon
I believe that they took the test on the enchroma website. My whole family did. I’m not jumping into anything with these glasses.
I want oh so want to try these in person before dropping any cash on any of these. I do plan on calling optometrists locally, but the only place (besides Amehzon) and direct from the manufacturer is in Texas.
If I can’t find it local, I might just take a day off and head down there. Maybe I’ll stop by the meh offices while I’m down there…
@jst1ofknd the second article, read towards the end of the second page where she tests them. Also look at the comments section.
@jst1ofknd @Kidsandliz @RiotDemon You can actually get the full text of the actual research article discussed in the first link here:

I’m at work and not going to read the full article right now, but an initial scan of the paper looks like their methodology was pretty good. I may read through it tonight in detail.

Oh gosh! I see the winning Mega and Powerball Lotto numbers for the next year!
Cool!
Sigh… I’ve finally talked myself into trying these color blind glasses out only to find they are no longer on Amazon. Only the really really expensive ones are left there…
@jst1ofknd Honestly, I wouldn’t worry about it too much. I’m colorblind, and I know a fair number of folks who are.
My neighbors happen to own a pair of Enchromas, and I tried them out. For me they kind of made everything look redder, but red things looked brighter and more saturated. That’s cool, but not really necessary. Even Enchromas aren’t going to actually let you see parts of the spectrum your eyes aren’t built to see. And, for the few jobs that color-blindness is a disqualifying factor, I am not aware of any that would waive the disqualification with “corrective” lenses.
