I was scrolling up from the bottom of the page, and stopped just below the coconut’s eyes, not far enough to see/realize that this is the “omniscient-omnipotent-coconut” from the order ID giphy, and I have to say, I wasn’t thinking I was looking at a coconut.
(In truth, even seeing the whole frame, this still doesn’t shout “coconut” to me…)
@awk@dasred I will welcome God-coconut as a new deity to our pantheon. But not to our pandemic. Some pans are good and some are not. BTW remember when Meh tried to sell us like a dozen cheap non-stick pans?
I got these, they’re fine. The snaps don’t hold the lid down as tightly as some other brands I’ve used but they do the job. I haven’t temperature stressed them or dropped them so no idea if they are really borosilicate glass. They were fully compatible with the BBQ meatloaf I ate out of one today.
@AySz88 Most stores do this. It’s highly annoying.
Truth be told, it only makes me further scrutinize the item(s) instead of what would normally be a more spontaneous buy.
@AySz88 Yeah, it seems downright un-American to not use over-hyped marketing-speak. But if these are like the last set I bought, they are made in China, which in this case might mean they didn’t know about our “2x” trick for lids. And the ones from a few months ago were actually very good quality – thinking of getting more. Do we know if this is the same model/brand as before? (sorry, didn’t check history yet to confirm)
@UncleVinny Without trying too hard, their brand name could be turned into Genicock… and that’s funny because it starts like genitals but then there’s cock… which is genitals. Cock! In related news, Fuddrucker’s could be turned into Fuckherrightinthepussy’s, but that would be harder. That’s what she said.
@Tadlem43@tweezak … yeah tons of info on the Internetz about this – at least 51% correct, probably. Yeah it is a real thing, and companies often go have done out of their way to not accurately disclose their process and changes. Which reminds me, I was going to go through my old kitchen stuff and look for any PYREX spelled with capital letters.
@pmarin@Tadlem43 When I worked in a failure analysis lab for a silicon device manufacturer we had to do something called piranha etch on 8” wafers. It was sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide (both over 90%) and it self heated (don’t try this at home kids). It didn’t get hot enough on its own so we bought borosilicate glass specimen jars that were about a half inch thick and about a foot tall and a foot in diameter. We had them cut down and edge polished to about 6” high. We could then use them on a hot plate. I should mention that you should follow the AAA rule for this: always add acid meaning you should add the acid to the base instead of the reverse unless you want a severe exothermic reaction. That is ok for very small quantities but for large volumes it can really run away and hurt you.
@jabird1999 hmm…haven’t used any yet. Thanks for the warning. I think I’ll store the lids unsnapped to reduce the number of cycles and try to make them last.
Just to clarify - according to the specs, for $16 I get a borosilicate glass food storage set, and for $29 I get a borosilicate glass food storage set that has been smoking weed?
@fjnut Can’t quite put my finger on exactly why, but there’s something about the reviews for this set that gives me the feeling most of the reviewers are shills.
@fjnut Wow thanks for the heads up! I was all set to pull the trigger, not such a “deal” after all. Sadly, often the case with Meh, and most of the reviews read like BS anyway. We need storage containers, but these may not be so hot…
So for a mere $3 more I can actually receive my item in under a month if I use Amazon? Yeah that’s a no brainer, still waiting on my hammock I ordered almost a month ago. Hopefully it holds up to winter conditions
@admiralpoopants I actually order a hammock with stand AND a hammock w/o stand as well… the stand version got here about 4 days ago, box not really beat up… but the hammock solo is still ‘en route’… though ironically they were both on the same delivery track, the hammock w/o stand just sort of got stuck in limbo… hmmmm
I bought these during a previous offering. They are a bit smaller than I expected (but i’ve been working with the same pyrex bowls for years). The three biggest sizes are the ones I use most often to store a meal. The lip already chipped on one (only been using them 3 weeks since my move).
On the lid, it says they are oven and microwave safe (after removing the lid). Can confirm both (note, please don’t pick up hot glass with your bare hands). $12 for 3 frequently used containers isn’t a bad deal (frequently as in I’m ALWAYS using at least one, usually 2). The rest might be situationally useful in the future.
EDIT: Oh, $29…meh. Less of a great deal. If you actually use storage containers for amounts less than 2 cups you might find these great.
@MilkyMoo 12 pack. It comes with 4 each of square, rectangle, and round shapes, which nest without the lids on (of course, where do you put the lids then? I keep mine in starbucks bag on the shelf).
@Copperweb No…but they stack well with the lids on. I’ve had my set for awhile now with no problems, nice thick glass that hasn’t chipped or cracked yet.
Only complaint would be, they get wicked HOT in the microwave!! Make sure you have oven mitts.
@Copperweb Without the lids, they do nest (the 12 pack has 3 shapes, but each shape nests with the different sizes of itself). You have to keep the lids separate for nesting, but I just keep mine in a small paper bag (starbucks, to give you an idea of the size).
Generally good stuff- I switched from plastic to glass about 5 years ago. But never buy this type of thing by mail- packaging is often desultory, and your delivery will sound like an old radio soundeffects crash box when you get it. Has happened to me at least 3 times. I bought my glass container at Costco; they were NOT broken, they WERE on sale, and they are easily returnable for any reason.
@MrNews These do arrive very well packed and are quite solid. Actually much better than Amazon packaging on average. Who do you think we’re buying from, some fly-by-night deal-of-the-day site, or a mega-billion-dollar corporation. Which one do you think has more consistent packaging? [Hint: who sometimes send me a fragile item and a heavy item together in a 10x-oversized cardboard box with two little squares of inflatable padding floating around in it? By inference, it’s the site that would be willing to sell different products in a single day, so it can’t be this one.]
Oh no… if I get excited over slightly on sale glass storage containers but no longer have any interest in shitty drones or metric tones of candy corn am I an adult?
Next time there’s a candy corn sale I’m buying three and filling every storage container in my house.
@Citymars Sadly the “brand name” ones might not be as good quality. These apparently have been pretty well-liked by most that got them here before. I just ordered 2x more of the 5-pc (rectangular) set.
I got these the last time they were offered a few months back. I’m using them daily and, while they aren’t as cool as my vintage Pyrex, they work great and the seals are holding up. I hand wash the lids because I read they tend to be the first to go.
Pros: Glass not plastic. Borosilicate (aka Pyrex) so should be less likely to break on thermal shock.
No leaching. Could be either a pro or con, as we use polypropylene containers which do not have plasticizers and extremely low ash levels. I know. I’m a chemist (retired) and used to work in the polypropylene business.
No more top rack of dishwasher, and having to dry plastic before storing away.
No more transferring food to a microwavable glass or ceramic bowl to avoid oil-scarring of sides and bottom when nuked.
A little bit cheaper than Amazon.
Cons: Heavier than plastic, by a lot. Could be the straw that breaks the drawer slides back…errr, rails… in the cabinet in which we keep the motley collection of plastic.
Mix of round and square containers. I hate round containers as they take up too much room in the fridge and in storage.
Largest size is only 4.4 cups. That’s a bit small. We usually have things that fill more than that or way less. In between those sizes, we eat, mostly.
Reports of lids breaking on after moderate use. I have little compunction throwing away a plastic container that breaks or loses its lid. I’m not so sure that after a while, we would have a motley, mismatched collection of glass containers with no lids. Uff da. It would be better if lids could be ordered separately.
Reports of chipping after moderate use.
Shipping/chipping by PB for an indeterminate delivery somewhen in the distant future. When they get here, will I still remember why I ordered them? With Covid, will I still be alive?
Not much cheaper than Amazon, where one can get one’s money back or at least a credit if they arrive in a more than 12 but less than a gazillion pieces. Not so sure about Meh.
Have to order today. On Amazon, I can think about it, for a while, order when I’m ready, receive the goods in a few days, and not pay very much more.
All in all, I have to say, Meh. If and when I order, I will pay the difference and get them from Amazon. PB is a big part of that calculation. But thanks for the idea.

These sold out before I could buy them last time.

@dasred Looks rather friendly and innocent for an all-knowing all-powerful God-coconut.
@awk @dasred > I don’t know about that…

Wait… No “pieces” trick double-counting the containers and lids separately!?
@AySz88 Most stores do this. It’s highly annoying.

@pmarin Uh, you don’t think the brands that use that trick aren’t also making their stuff in China?
How long would my massive balls stay fresh in these?

@bmartinez1384 it depends whether you keep them in the fridge or the freezer. They last longer in the freezer.

When the first few letters of your brand name are the same as “genitals”, you might’ve been led astray somewhere in life.

@Tadlem43 More than you ever wanted to know…

@aperfecttool72 I feel this whole year has been teachable moments. Unfortunately I think we’re being lectured because clearly we did something bad!
Bought these last time and have been happy. It was nice to free up the top rack of the dishwasher from constant plastic containers.
@clutchdude Agree, glass food containers have worked well and these stack nicely in both the fridge and in storage.
I bought these last time. Use them weekly…some daily. Lid snaps have broken on several of them already
@jabird1999 hmm…haven’t used any yet. Thanks for the warning. I think I’ll store the lids unsnapped to reduce the number of cycles and try to make them last.
@tweezak we store the lids separate
@jabird1999 how are you washing the lids?
@clutchdude top rack of dishwasher

I expected the stupid joke to involve bore-osilicate, like bore-ophyll, but you went with seals. Lame.

@alternatetheory mine left Indiana, traveled to Pennsylvania and now is headed back to Indiana. I live in New York state
@admiralpoopants @alternatetheory I’m out West in case it wants to come visit for a while.

@MilkyMoo 12 pack. It comes with 4 each of square, rectangle, and round shapes, which nest without the lids on (of course, where do you put the lids then? I keep mine in starbucks bag on the shelf).
Purchased June 22.

Upon further review, I find this vaguely disturbing.
I have two sets and got rid of all the plastic junk. My cabinet looks great. The nested glass is kind of hypnotic. Highly recommended.

are they shipping separately? got mine but only 6 with lids, not the 12 with lids pictured and described? just wondering…
