@moondrake I’m so sorry. The first few years are hard. It gets easier as time goes by, but I still get a little melancholy on mother’s day even after all these years.
Collect money from my sisters so they can lay partial claim to the gift I grabbed well in advance. One officially acknowledged I am a far better gifter, and likes taking the stress off. The other always forgets, and begs me not to tell Mom. Each pays for half, so I’m 6 years into not actually paying for Mother’s Day gifts.
Mom’s been dead for decades, so none of the above.
I usually wish people (whether mothers or not) a Happy Mother’s Day along with a comment along the lines of, “What?! You should have shitty day for not being a mother?”
In the days leading up to Mother’s Day I generally make note of the tactless and incompetent marketing people who are not savvy enough to target people such as myself correctly. Their antics used to annoy me, but I’ve (mostly) gotten over it.
We have a family barbecue where the men do all of the cooking and cleaning for the moms. Reality: the moms plan it, assign each person to bring items, make the side dishes and desserts ahead of time, and put the food away afterwards. Men stand around the grill drinking beer and put the trash out after we fill it with paper plates. Mostly we laugh a lot.
things my mom likes best on mother’s day: to see me and to receive a nice card. my dad and sister take care of The Annual Hanging Plant for the front door.
i also send flowers if we aren’t going to see them within a week or so. otherwise i pick some up on the drive down. we try to get together to have a lunch or something, as it is also my sister’s birthday.
Make Mom brunch at her house because going out on Mother’s day is a royal cluster around here. Her Birthday is one week later and we always take her out. She’s going to be 84 this year and I know she’s not going to be around much longer.
this year I’m Driving 6 hours away, and into another Country to pick her up and bring her home.
10 days prior making the same trip to drop her at a friends house in Guelph, ON. From there they will drive to Montreal, pick up another friend(coming off a cruise of the St.Lawrence), and continue back across the border to another classmate’s house in Denmark, ME. where they will have a mini class reunion.
they will get back to her freind’s place in Ontario on Mother’s day, I’m Driving up on Monday.
maybe i should send a card to that house…
Miss her. She passed away 15 years ago.
@Pony
@Pony This will be my second year without mine.

@Pony I’m sorry you lost your mother. I did too, almost 26 years ago and our family still misses her.
@Pony Me too. 3 years ago. I may visit her grave if I’m able. Fortunately, it is only about a 15 min. drive.
@Pony it’s the club nobody wants to join. I miss my mom every day. Will be three years in September.
@Pony It will be 21 years this Sucktember, and I still miss her every day. Worst club ever.
@freakaluscious It really is a lousy club.
Forget it’s mothers’ day
Miss her, good day for drinking.
Feel guilty for moving 400 miles away.

Don’t do nearly enough…
Meh
Tell my wife, “You’re somebody’s Mom, but not my Mom.”
Then give her what I got for her anyway.
Remember her and her great sense of humor.
@lordbowen I’m sorry she is gone. That is a very nice picture.
@andyw @lordbowen - She was so young!
You need to add “All of the above” for the really good Moms. I know you would get at least one click.

Call. If I remember. :-\
Buy my mom a gift card, so she can buy me something.
