For fans of Anthony Bourdain &/or great documentaries...
9CNN is planning to air the critically acclaimed film “Roadrunner” on March 6 at 9pm. I’ve been wanting to see it & thought some of you might be interested, too. It looks really good & was produced & directed by the guy responsible for “20 Feet From Stardom” & “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?”

I’ve been wanting to see this too. Thanks. He looks so young in some of it. I watched his show a lot and was very saddened by his death. He had the coolest job. If I could do any job it would be his or Samantha browns.
I rented this off apple about a month ago. watched it with my wife. we both thought it was well done. it talked about Anthony doing the show and leading up to his unfortunate death. well worth the investment of time.
Oooh, I haven’t heard of this one. I’ll def. check it out. Thanks!
As I understand it, there is some discussion about using AI to “deep fake” his voiceover in parts, in his narration style perfected in “No Reservations”.
There was no intent to deceive the viewer, as the intent is entirely to honor his body of work and present it “in his voice” in the way that only Anthony could. I have no problem with that use, and it adds to the initimacy viewers felt watching him work his magic, like we were right there with him, sharing his joy about the food and his honest social commentary on the places he took us.
RIP, Tony. You left us too soon. There are still plenty of dives around the globe we want to visit with you.
@mike808 I hadn’t heard about the AI controversy, that’s interesting. I agree that the intent is important. I checked out an article about it & was relieved to learn that at least they used it with material he had actually written himself, so it wasn’t something that was merely imagined, which would have been disturbing, to say the least!
Too bad I don’t have CNN or AppleTV.
@mike808 it will probably end up on HBOMax soon, as do most CNN Films, so if you don’t subscribe to that one, you could always take advantage of a free trial.
Now let’s just keep our fingers crossed that CNN doesn’t preempt it for “breaking news!” If that a-hole Putin decides to invade Ukraine on that day, I’ll be pissed! Granted, I’ll be pissed no matter what day he picks, but that would suck extra hard!
Update: the current ads are showing a new date & time, March 13th at 9pm, so I’m assuming that means the March 6th showing is cancelled, although I’m planning on checking just in case, since it’s still showing up on the schedule & CNN can be very erratic in their programming, especially for specials like this.
@ircon96
My tv is showing Anderson cooper 360 tomorrow at 9 and the roadrunner on for the 13th. I have U-verse and it’s on demand right now too so that is also an option.
@Star2236 Thanks for confirming, my local schedule still hasn’t been updated & is all over the place, like they show a 5-hour time slot for tonight & 90-mins on the 12th at 10pm, not the 13th at 9pm, that sort of stuff. Oy vey. Of course, I’m “lucky” enough to have Comcrap, so it’ll prob never be corrected. Thanks also for the heads up on streaming for those who pay as they go, but I’m a tightwad, so i prefer not to rent films unless absolutely necessary, since i already pay for several streaming services i hardly use as it is!
@ircon96
We stream as a family, my brother pays for one, I pay for another, my mom, sister and we all share. It helps cut down on the cost and that way we don’t feel bad if don’t use it bc someone else will and we’ll probable use theirs.
@Star2236 That’s definitely the way to go! I share mine with others also & i have access to one from a family member. Another way to save is to pay for a service for long enough to catch up on some of the stuff you most want to see, then switch to another, since they’re so easy to cancel & re-subscribe at will.
@ircon96 @Star2236 Amazon won’t let uou unsubscribe from the Prime Video app (phone, Tivo, FireStick, Roku, etc). You have to do it through the website.
@mike808 @Star2236 True, but i don’t count Prime video anyway, since it’s included as part of Prime membership. In any case, i don’t think “Roadrunner” is streaming free on any service currently, I’ve just seen it for rent so far. It will probably eventually end up on HBO, tho, since it’s labeled as a CNN doc.
@ircon96 @Star2236 I was referring to when you add Amazon “Channels” (Britbox, Paramount+, Showtime, etc) to binge, you can’t cancel from the Amazon Video app like you can subscribe instantly with a “Subscribe Now” button.
@mike808 Ohhh! I forgot about that option, i haven’t tried any of those, but good to know just in case I’m tempted.
@ircon96 It seems Paramount+ is running $0.99/mo for 2 months a couple of times a year. So I plan to binge the Star Trek shows the next time it comes up on sale.
