It isn’t going to happen for a long, long time, the FAA wants exceptionally tight control of the airspace and the liability is so high no one is willing to insure them if they are in fact mass marketed. Add to that the national security implications. I doubt I’ll see it in my lifetime (a sky full of multiple mode conveyances [car/plane/copter combo]).
@Pavlov Actually it’s not really workable, that’s why the taylor car never (pardon the pun) took off. If you got the bucks what Dean Kamen and Travolta have done is the most workable solution. Plus it’s kinda cool to have a plane or helicopter in the garage. The infrastructure is there if you can afford it.
@cranky1950 You hit the nail on the head - affordability. It will not be more than a fanciful toy for the super wealthy. I can’t imagine turning an affordable flying car loose on the general public for no other reason than the criminal use probability.
The congestion does not compare. The maintenance does not compare. The conditions don’t compare.
The pilots make $ flying well and lose their jobs if they don’t pay attention.
And except for what happens when the entire comm system goes down while lots of vehicles are in the air.
Perhaps a custom infinitely adjustable efficiently touted “mini-bus in the air” that carries multiple passengers and goes from pickup door to destination door might work. With professional pilots, and all the security crap in place that’s in place now, in place on these vehicles. Or perhaps even more security.
The Jetsons never dealt with drunks or terrorists.
@ELUNO Look at the average expressway during rush hour then think not being able to stop and have to keep moving or crash. There’s just too much humanity out there for it to work well.
Good thing he’s only looking at flying cars being a “future” thing, because he has no sense of time.
@f00l
We need to work on some really good autopilot software before cars take off…
@compunaut
"Software":
@f00l That might be software, but it is NOT autopilot.
Yowzer!
OR
Want a trashy Space RV

If you are more likely to die driving to the airport than flying on a plane, where does a flying car stand?!?!
@ELUNO That’s because professional ‘drivers’ are flying the planes. If all cars had professional drivers, the odds you mentioned might be reversed.
@ELUNO

@compunaut @f00l but what about my question?! Would a flying car be way worse then, based on your comments?
@ELUNO
If human drivers, disaster
If self-navigating, perhaps.
Except for the security issues.

@f00l maybe we can get a skyhook installed in our skulls and the Amazon done can pick us up and drop us off.
@PocketBrain
Ok
Jeff@amazon.com
I think.
Or is it
Bezos@amazon.com?
Forget.
@ELUNO Look at the average expressway during rush hour then think not being able to stop and have to keep moving or crash. There’s just too much humanity out there for it to work well.
@cranky1950 Well, with the extra space, rush hour traffic would take a whole other form.
@ELUNO
A crash onto something on the ground and burn form.
And every individual would be flying a potential bomb.
@f00l Sounds like a way to quickly thin out the bad drivers… Just don’t be under one.
Ever see a flaming ten-car pileup on the freeway? Now imagine that crashing through your living room ceiling.
