@aetris@arielleslie I would suggest definitely having an ophthalmologist do it. You might be able to save a few bucks with a pocket knife and a laser pointer, but being blind would offset the savings.
BUT… the husband of a friend of mine, who is near sighted, and does them for a living won’t do it on himself. His reason it that he would prefer to be able to see up close without glasses for much longer than if his vision was 20/20.
I have been wearing corrective lenses since age 9 and contacts since age 11. I have no idea why anyone prefers glasses over contacts, at least for any reason that has to do with being able to see better.
@cpierce I only prefer glasses because any time I’ve tried contacts, my eyes got bloodshot and itchy. Like something was in my eyes. Because something was in my eyes.
@cpierce I have allergies and dry skin. They usually make my eyes itchy. Contacts are not very comfortable, especially for more than a few hours. When I attempted to wear them to work which happens to be very dusty, I wanted to claw my eyes out.
Even now that I’m on allergy medications and I use allergy eye drops ahead of time, I have to use contact drops in my eyes every hour.
It’s just not worth it to me. It’s easier to put my glasses on at the beginning of the day and then take them off at night.
@cpierce I have always felt the same. I have worn contacts (just one at first, one eye is much worse than the other) since I was a pre-teen also. Eyes are beautiful! They are the gateway to the soul! Or something like that. Why would one want to cover them all the time!?
@BigMarty45s Yeah my mom has nearly 20/20 vision now with that too. And as a bonus she discovered that a favorite shirt of hers had yellow in it that she didn’t realize. LOL
Browlines. Sometimes the plastic top bit is faux “horn” and they get the misnomer “horn-rim glasses,” but that’s an entirely different style. Don’t let ignorance blind you.
My favorite glasses ever were rimless with hexagonal lenses. Unfortunately they were too frail for the abuse my glasses tend to get, so I’ve gone back to wire frames. I get free prescription safety glasses from work, so it all works out.
@dannybeans I have a pair of those with purple lenses for costuming. I wear them with my steampunk stuff (the goggles go on the hat). I also use a carefully preserved pair of the awesome glasses Burger King gave out as promos for the Wild Wild West film. I should have collected a bunch of them but I didn’t have the foresight.
@RiotDemon Thanks, but those are the plain style, they don’t have the little dolphin things. I wouldn’t pay $20 for backups unless these broke anyway, they were, as I recall, $1 with the purchase of a combo meal. They were cool enough to wear with my medieval garb when I wasn’t up to facing the sun. They achieved greater costuming value later when steampunk got popular.
@RiotDemon Cool! Yeah, when I googled for pics to use, they were all the plain kind. I suspect that the fancy ones sold out and they subbed in the plain ones. Although he’s wearing plain ones on the posters, so maybe these are subs.
Another vote for no frame. When I got my first frames years ago, I told them to show me the ones that looked as close as possible to me not having glasses. Ten years later, those titanium frames are still going strong (with the same prescription).
I’m one of the lucky ones: my prescription is very minor, and I’m able to play sports, hike, and do pretty much everything but stare at a screen or read a book without glasses (menus and other things are fine, I have to squint every once in a while). Tried contacts twice, but I just hate them.
If it was worse, I’d get LASIK or the appropriate associated procedure immediately. Wearing glasses all the time would be terrible.
@Kabn You get used to it, really. I’ve had to wear glasses fulltime for almost thirty years now, and it’s long been at the point that I feel naked without them.
I have at least one active pair of prescription glasses or sunglasses in each of the categories listed, plus some half-rims and thin plastic frames. Voted horn-rimmed because that’s what I’m wearing right this minute.
Welding goggles
@panafonics i was looking for those for the last eclipse.
Wine! Arf arf!
LASIK
@shahnm FTW!
@shahnm The best thing I have every done for myself.
@arielleslie - where did you have it done? Reccomendations?
@aetris @arielleslie I would suggest definitely having an ophthalmologist do it. You might be able to save a few bucks with a pocket knife and a laser pointer, but being blind would offset the savings.
@aetris I got mine done at LASIK Plus in Denver and have only good things to say about the experience.
@shahnm I had mine done in Canada in 1996 before it was approved in the States. Done by one of the pioneers. Best money I ever spent.

No frame
@cooljmy10 with plastic lenses, they weigh less than a feather.
@cooljmy10 and you can forget you are wearing them

@cpierce I can see better with glasses.
Aviators, preferably Mirrorshades.
I found some very light-weight, clear plastic frames a while back. They perfectly fit my head without ear hooks, instead curving around the back.
I broke them and found out the factory had burned down. I am still hoping to find another set.
The kind that let you see more than just light. Like when clones lie to you or when a Romulan is having health issues.

@mehcuda67 One of my favorite movies!! Love it

Why isn’t “cheap” an option, besides that they are getting harder to find?
@phendrick Eyebuydirect has glasses for cheap without going through the glasses equivalent of big pharma.
/youtube cheap sunglasses

A friend of mine used to work for a local company that makes supplies for historical reenactors, and wore a pair of these for the longest time:

I always liked those

@moondrake oh, meh.
@moondrake $1.99 not bad. They don’t show your fancy ones though.

@moondrake it was your lucky day.
Like someone else said… frameless.

I prefer to squint and look mean or pissed off so people leave me alone.

Can’t go wrong with the classic Elvis Costello look.
