@sanspoint Yeah, Alton Brown is about 95% of my enthusiasm for the show. But I really enjoy watching them overcome those crazy obstacles to make decent food.
@Seeds We’ve only tried a few of his recipes, but they’ve been pretty good. I definitely feel like I learn a lot and the tips really are golden. I think I mostly appreciate understanding WHY we should do things a certain way.
Beat Bobby Flay. I don’t know why. Every episode is the same. The contestant makes a really solid dish in the final that looks great. Bobby Flay makes a dish catered to the tastes of food critic types. Flay wins. Rinse repeat.
The Holiday competitions, Halloween and Christmas. Both the baking ones and the display constructions. But they have the same problems the weekly shows do; too much reality crap and personalities versus skill, and darn it, I want to see the best these people can do, not just what can be crammed into too short of a time.
Not a fan of the competition shows. If I watch a cooking show, I want it to teach me how to make something. Just a personal preference, not a judgment. I can understand the appeal, and it’s not like I avoid Iron Man movies because they don’t give me usable schematics for my own super suit.
Agreed. I might be interested in a game show that focused on actual technique, rather than all the contrived interpersonal conflicts. All the current “reality” fare is barely a step above Jerry Springer. No thanks.
@hchavers Maybe no new shows, but it still airs regularly. Next airing is Tuesday night at 11pm PT, then again on Friday, three episodes in a row beginning 4pm PT.
I won’t watch any cooking show that doesn’t deliver the food to my house right after the show ends. What good is watching someone cook if you don’t get to eat it?
Worst cooks in America. Just to let see how bad they really are. The techniques they teach are not the least useful to me. I sincerely doubt I’ll ever butcher a fish or spatchcock poultry.
@sgrazi spatchcocking is great. I used it to cook Thanksgiving turkey a few times until I changed to an infrared “fryer.”
The spatchcocked turkey cooked in half the time of regular oven turkey and was super juicy.
@RiotDemon@sgrazi On one of Alton Brown’s Thanksgiving shows he confessed that because of all the prep they had to do, they were sick of turkey and cooking by the actual Holiday. He used a panini press/foreman grill type appliance and cooked spatchcocked cornish game hens as dinner; apparently it worked quite well.
I LOVE GBBO. and I learn stuff, like my teen and i watched one where they made eclairs so we decided to try and it helped knowing the “v” you want with the pastry mix.
I used to like Chopped and Cutthroat and Guys Grocery, but now they depress me. they get handed gummy worms and a random meat and make something the judges fawn over, I follow a recipe to a T and it tastes like crap. I’m no Worst Chefs in America, but why, how, what…
Cutthroat Kitchen
@christinewas yes, this.
@christinewas @Seeds is it still on?
@christinewas Alton Brown
@hchavers I don’t know, it was a year ago. I haven’t gotten through all the episodes I have, and I don’t have cable.
@christinewas @sanspoint I like his tips, but I’m usually disappointed in his recipes.

@christinewas Yes, this is obviously the only correct answer. Not sure how it got left off the poll or how so many people got it wrong…
Old Iron Chef only; fuck off with that new shit.
@nogoodwithnames
/giphy old shit
@nogoodwithnames The best part of Iron Chef America is Alton Brown as the commentator. Otherwise, give me the original.
Master Chef Jr.
Meh. I can’t stand that bullshit. But for cooking shows, I like Good Eats.
/giphy Alton Brown
@joelmw I know that’s right.
Cooking is NOT a competition.
For that matter, neither is eating.
@2many2no @joelmw
@joelmw @therealjrn No, just no.
OTOH…
@2many2no @joelmw
My kids got hooked on Zumbo’s Just Desserts
TIL Bake-Off has a different name in the US. I didn’t even know we were airing GBBO.
Nailed It on Netflix is so good
@cspwal it’s fun to watch a trainwreck.
@cspwal My favorite too.
Beat Bobby Flay. I don’t know why. Every episode is the same. The contestant makes a really solid dish in the final that looks great. Bobby Flay makes a dish catered to the tastes of food critic types. Flay wins. Rinse repeat.
@evilstan60 I prefered the older Throw Down show with Bobby Flay.
@duodec I kinda felt bad for the guys on that show. They thought their food was being featured on food network only to have bobby upstage them.
@evilstan60 It’s because everyone gives Bobby shit, which is the best part
@evilstan60 That was its one failing. Reality crap intruding into an otherwise fun show.
I still want to marry Kimberly Wilson from GBBO, she’s just so magically wonderful.
Saturday Night Live
You’ll need a knife… a very, very, very sharp knife.

Oh well. I can’t get it to embed.
Fuck NBC for this little obstacle.

What I learned:
Save the liver.

@simplersimon I agree. I watch way more teaching type shows. Most are on youtube though. Food wishes is my favorite.
@simplersimon Same here. I like to watch new techniques or certain recipes… not game shows.
@evilstan60 I’ll have to check that one out. Thanks.
Agreed. I might be interested in a game show that focused on actual technique, rather than all the contrived interpersonal conflicts. All the current “reality” fare is barely a step above Jerry Springer. No thanks.
Chopped Junior is kinda fun. Those kids crack me up sometimes.
@ruouttaurmind is that show still on?
@hchavers Maybe no new shows, but it still airs regularly. Next airing is Tuesday night at 11pm PT, then again on Friday, three episodes in a row beginning 4pm PT.
The Original Iron Chef…
When Morimoto weighed 98lbs and the Chairman dressed like he was hosting a Prince Concert.
@somf69 Chairman Kaga really is the best.
I like the weird ingredients on Chopped, and the Japanese version of iron Chef. They will eat anything, the judges especially.
Not a competition, but Black Metal Chef.
I’ve never seen any of these. Nor any other cooking show that didn’t just happen to be on in the background. Meh.
I won’t watch any cooking show that doesn’t deliver the food to my house right after the show ends. What good is watching someone cook if you don’t get to eat it?
… Cook it myself? What, are you nuts?

Iron Cook.
I’m 30% iron.
Master Chef. Gordon Ramsay!
OG Iron Chef FTW

@mollama sometimes it’s just the recipe itself. I love when recipes have reviews that I can read.
Otherwise I’ll use the Betty Crocker cookbook. Almost everything I make in there is perfect.
“Nailed It” on Netflix is a hoot.
