And the pilot's blog showing an up close picture of his custom quad. It looks like it trades off payload/camera-carrying capabilities and long battery life to achieve speed, agility, and high-performance flight control capabilities. (but that's just my amateur opinion as an aerospace engineer :-) )

@pepsiwine Thank you for your amature opinion... ;-) Kidding aside... Honestly, I woudln't be too surprised that it's legit. Even my big lumbering hex can surprise me sometimes. Without the gimbal, and set to manual mode, it will display speed and agility that can quickly exceed my flight skills if I'm not careful. Horizontal speed as reported by the telem logs has been up to 63kph (just over 39mph). Not even close to the video, but if a 4 pound hex can do 40, surely a purpose built could double that.

I saw your video where you fly 2 drones at once. Do you ever have any problems with their transmitters interfering? With all the "fly-away" problems people have reported having with DJI Phantoms, I'm scared to even have my cell phone on when I fly mine.

@pepsiwine (my reply from another thread, copied here for completeness). I did a little testing with both quads armed, but on the ground and couldn't elicit any kind of response from the opposing controllers. Tried both separately and simultaniously in an attempt to get any kind of reaction. Then I went to a big, open space very early in the morning specifically to avoid contact with the public as I tested my theory that they'll live together, kumbaya. After about a 11 minute flight I had no indication of interference at all.

@ruouttaurmind I've been skeptical of this video as well. I just thought it's too unrealistic (not the drone itself), but the way the camera tracks the drone perfectly, keeping it in frame at all times. Unless, the flight maneuvers was choreographed and the camera man knew every step of the flight. Dunno!

@sportykev I believe he films his LOS (line of sight) flight videos with a head-mounted GoPro, hence the video perfectly tracking the quad. This guy is known for building very high voltage and high speed quads, it’s legit.

@Pufferfishy I've always been a firm believer in the assertion "Just because you CAN build something doesn't mean you SHOULD build something". For the record, this realization came to me about half a second after the first test launch of a 14 foot trebuchet I bodged up in the garage...

That thread was really interesting, but oddly low on actual "conversation". Some really cool vids for sure - if I get the chops as a pilot I'd love to build one of these fast little racers.

Did you see the video of the quads made up to look like the "air cycles" in the Star Wars scene from the "chase" on Endor? Really cool stuff - until they hit the trees....

@ruouttaurmind Trebuchet, eh? You sound like my brother. When he was younger he used an old run-down house on our family's property to build a climbing wall on the outside (complete with safety-harness system), a half-pipe on the inside (he gutted out the ceiling of the first floor so it went straight up to the second floor), and a zip-line that went from the attic of the house down to a tree near the backyard.

He probably would've really liked your trebuchet since he was also really into Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

@pepsiwine Sounds like we would have got on well. I did a zip line when I was 10 using clothesline cording I stole from the neighbors yards and the wheels from a sliding screen door. Like with the trebuchet, I only saw the flaws in my plan a split second after putting it into action. As a 10 year old I never considered that zip lines would have some sort of braking system...

@Pufferfishy I saw those. Exceptionally cool. I really like the kittycopter too. I think I can scavenge the bits off my Syma X-1 to make one of those little speeders. Dunno if my artistic skills are up to it, but I'm confident I can do the mechanical and electronic stuff well enough.

As a kid I jumped off the roof with a trash bag as a parachute. I also put a fork in a toaster. Somehow I still managed to end up an engineer....

@ruouttaurmind Yeah, as I recall his zip line had a braking issue, too. He did think of a pretty ingenious way to reset the zip line harness back to the top of the house - he used our riding lawnmower to "drive" it back up there.
The whole thing was a pretty cool setup. I never got to do the zip line, though, I was away at college at the time. DAMN YOU, COLLEGE! STOP RUINING MY LIFE AND EATING ALL MY STEAK!
