I gave up on woot a couple of years ago when it became cluttered with a bunch of so/so deals and made you dig for the obnoxious descriptions. I want my obnoxious commentary up front and in my face with just a couple of (or even one) good deals.
Oh, there's still some interesting stuff there. The thing that is painful, however, is seeing them try to be creative or funny when the original creative and funny people have left. What baffles me is that they haven't bucked up to hire some really good talent - I mean there are other funny, quirky people they could find. It's painful because they obviously don't care. Oh, and the shopping cart.
"Woot.com" is NOT the real "woot". It's not even really a "deal" site anymore. Take today's item for example. In the hollow shell they have become would it be $15? Not a chance..It would be 39.99 minimum. They bought the company, but did not value the "mojo", and they are now left with a confusing, overloaded web site filled with overpriced leftovers.
The talk will fade, but people will flood to the place that's truly a daily "deal" site, and has the mojo that the greedy suits weren't smart enough to keep hold of. (I'm sure the mods over at the former great site are having conniption fits that there is freedom they can't control too...;) )
I'm indifferent about Woot. If they have something I need and the price is good I'll pick it up. It's just been few and far between lately. I was just recalling the Woot Office Olympics to someone the other day. I miss all the writers’ posts and was sad when they were moved from the sidebar to the bottom of the page and then pretty much abandoned entirely. It was the experience that made the site. It seemed like a work place utopia, good work and good fun.
I am really sad about what Shirt.Woot has become and the artists seem disenchanted as well. I reserve hope that Mediocre Laboratories will launch a t-shirt site one day. Today I'm just glad that Meh exists and thankful that Snapster has created a new island of misfit toys.
I think about the employees....the ones that are still there from when woot was at it's peak. From what I've heard, it was as great a place to work as it was for all of us to shop and hang out. Imagine having to witness the tragedy of what happened from the inside. Now imagine that place is reopening down the road and you're still sitting in the smoldering remains of the first place.
I don't think trashing either site will do anything but make a person seem bitter. If people feel compelled to spout hate, there's nothing you can do about it. That being said, I will still continue to check woot and meh daily. If I see something that I want to buy, I'll buy it. shrug
I hope not. Sure, some people are pretty much doing victory laps in celebration, and over time that will die down. But aside from avoiding spamming/trolling/illegal stuff, I hope we don't have forbidden topics here. Heavy-handed comment moderation and censorship was one of the big differences between old Woot and current Woot and really hurt the community, and nobody wants to see Meh go down that road.
Is the guy on the "world of wootcraft" video the same person from "Randall Reads Your Facebook Status in a Disapproving Tone?" You left the poor guy there?
I have to say...yesterday's Woot birthday event was fun. It kept me engaged. It almost felt like the good ol' days... A touch corporate feeling, like this is how we're supposed to act, but you can tell there were corporate meetings about things that took away from the full authenticity. Almost like how an alien observes what a culture is like and tries to replicate it.
The only problem was that there's that spark missing. That certain feeling that I can't really explain. If it helps to explain: In my week at Meh, you see and feel that spark again: That feeling that you're traveling down the highway without a seatbelt because, as the kids say, YOLO!
Woot was GREAT prior to sale and the changes made by Amazon. MEH is still new and will be whatever the powers here want. 2 entities on different paths. Why not just take the good from either site and stop the comparisons? My mother had a saying of "take what does you" - both have good points.
I think it would be hilarious if Meh setup a bad word filter and ONLY replaced the word Woot with something new and funny every day.
A certain four-letter-word, sure to offend, might be a funnier option.
Nope.
Those be fighting words!
It's like having a drink with your ex-wife
He wants to be reasonable! BURN HIM.
What will I do with all the monkeys if we give up on woot?
I have about 25 of them and they are all going on ebay
What would happen to the poop report?!
I am willing to move the poop report here.

maybe once we get wine.meh
I really hope so. The sooner, the better.
Woot => Meh.
What took so long?
Was it a "we will not start a competitive website for x years" clause in the final sell-out Woot contract?
3 years actually
Ricknew, you do realise your statement reads Woot is equal to or greater than Meh to anyone with math brain? -=C=-
I wish, tater. I wish.
They say nobody hates like family...
I also hope that over there they stop talking meh as a way to trash Woot.
You know I'm with you on that one. It's a surprisingly unpopular opinion.
Woot sucks since they sold out to big business. That and I haven't been able to buy crap in years. I want some random crap!!! Liking this meh so far.

I think a lot of talent still exists at woot. I just absolutely hate having to dig for it in their mangled web of a page.

I couldn't agree more. It has to be a horrible situation to be in.

Oh absolutely. My motive for this thread was just to basically remind people that there are still some good people over there.
Is the guy on the "world of wootcraft" video the same person from "Randall Reads Your Facebook Status in a Disapproving Tone?" You left the poor guy there?
I haven't watched the video, but not unless @llandar is working there again and I don't think that happened.
Nope. Randall was @llandar. The CrapSMaster on WoWC is @Slydon.
I don't know who should be more insulted by that. Me or @slydon.
@llandar You're so much better on stage than me, so maybe he just means my acting skills are improving!
@slydon They are, pal. You've achieved true enlawntenment. <3
D'awwww. Unless you're just using your talent to fool me, in which case, I HOPE YOU SWALLOW A BIKE, DIPSHIT
@llandar FORGOT TO AT YOU
What if Meh was just a prank site set up by woot as part of their B-day bash?
We did not work as much as we did this week just for a prank (though that does seem like something we'd do)
damn. that's a better idea than actual site. oh well.
that's quite a witty idea, and the only folks capable are the folks that started meh so, meh started woot and woot started meh.
The timing still seems suspect but I don't have a problem with the 'evolved' woot so it would be funny to me. I think others would be militant.

The spark. I has it.

amen
A voice of reason? Now where's the drama in that?
Yes. Please. I like both Miracle Whip and mayonnaise. I like both Pepsi and Coke. It doesn't have to be one or the other.
Lies. No one likes Miracle Whip.
Some people do. People that are horribly mistaken and confused.
There are some really frightening people that can't tell the difference.
I eat Miracle Whip on homemade sandwiches, and mayo on deli sandwiches. I love Miracle Whip.
People without tongues?
Wow, pooflady, you clearly have terrible taste. Now if you had countered mayo with Cool Whip, and Coke with Shasta, I would have approved.
I agree with pooflady. But there aren't many food/drinks I don't like..except for Fresca and pears. Those should be obliterated.
