Ethics and inaugural ball
13If asked as a date to inaugural ball (friend of a friend set up date with military guy not trump supporter) do you…
- Get your nails and hair done and go because fancy dresses and dancing is fun.
- Decline because you don’t like or support trump?
3 other?
Is attending supporting trump? Or just yipee fancy ball?
P.s. not once in lifetime i have been to last 3.

Go. Enjoy. It’s a story to tell later.
I went to one of Nixon’s Inaugurations as a teenager, courtesy of my relatives who offered to take me.
Didn’t stop me from protesting the war.
I say go, and you can even wear the same dress as you did the last time.
If anyone notices, just tell them that you couldn’t get a new dress since the entire DC area is sold out.
@zachdecker
Better yet, she should go, and wear a dress that looks just like Melania’s or Ivanka’s.
@f00l no dress of mine is smithsonian worthy despite owning a few fancy ballgowns
@CaptAmehrican
See what this guy did with art. I can’t get the article to copy/paste correctly but it’s worth a read.

Can you do something similarly ironic or meta-commentary with a dress you can get your hands on? One that doesn’t cost stupid money?
If so, wear it, go, and have a grand time.
If not, wear something you like, go, and have a grand time.
Go.
@Barney
And she should being us pix.
@f00l I’d love to go to the inauguration and then go to one of the balls. I’d even give up my jeans, my Meh t-shirts, and my purple sneakers, and wear a dress.
Go, definitely. If rich Republicans are paying for the food and drink, take advantage of it. Carefully save all programs and mementos, which may have collectible value in a few years. Don’t get within grabbing distance. Enjoy yourself, and POIDH.
I’d personally be uncomfortable going because trump, but if I knew someone in a situation like yours who wanted to go I wouldn’t hold it against them. Just do what you want.
There are some good lines for this. You don’t wanna not be able to use these, do you? Well then you gotta go.
“I’m going to one of Trump’s balls.”
“I went to one of Trump’s balls. It was great.”
Sorry, but don’t you have to go, so that you truthfully say these lines and similar for rest of you life? Make your grandkids smirk someday?
If it were me, #2 with an exclamation!
Wouldn’t judge you for going, though. It could be an interesting chapter for your memoirs.
2037: ‘I was actually at the ball when the National Guard came in and took him into custody. They had it all coordinated with the Secret Service, the Capitol police, hotel security, all that. And to this day, nobody knows what became of him. Here’s the framed invitation, and it’s going to my favorite grandchild some day.’
@OldCatLady
If only.
@OldCatLady -
.
A girl can dream, right?
That must be why he fired the head of the National Guard effective inauguration day.
@KDemo
I’m sure the CIA just luvs him.
@KDemo And then realized that meant the entire D.C. National Guard had no leader as of mid-day Friday and rather cravenly asked if he’d stay on another three days. Golly gosh and gee-whiz, he replied, but I’ve already packed up my office and asked the second in command to pick up the slack after I walk out the door.
I’d go!
It’s got to be a pretty cool thing you can talk about for a long time. Have fun!
I can’t imagine spending 10 minutes in a crowd of Trump fans. Literally, can’t get the what-if mojo working well enough to role-play myself through 10 minutes.
I personally know two seriously-dating couples whose relationships ended over their shared inability even to talk politics in the last year.
Contrary to what some TV watchers think, orange is definitely not the new black.
@magic_cave it may not be the new black but it certainly is the new wacko
@mick fyi there are a bunch of inaugural balls not just one. Each time I have been to one of the lower ones not the biggest ones. Yes Bush Obama Obama. Music has been better at Obama’s. Bush’s very few people dancing.
Attending is supporting Trump. Unless you protest and get thrown out. Then you’re doing your part. Seriously, that’s the story I want to hear; mass protestors getting thrown out of the inagural ball because the entertainment is “lame.” Also cheeto Hitler.
Ok I slept on this choice. Each of the other times I immediately went into oh what shall I wear mode. This time I realized I don’t want to get dressed up in support of him. That everything I kept considering was not polite charming and gracious. How I got invited was I am capable of pulling off polite charming and gracious as well as dressed nice and can ballroom dance .
So I sent off the email this morning declining the invite.
@CaptAmehrican Can I have your invitation?
@sammydog01 not mine to give. I was being invited as an “and date”
@CaptAmehrican - I bow to you in reverence.
@CaptAmehrican
If you didn’t wanna go even out of curiosity or to go to a dress up party or to witness the insanity, no reason to go.
So what will you do instead?
@CaptAmehrican i accept your decision. kinda bummed though… i wanted to go to one of them there balls. vicariously, through you…
@CaptAmehrican Kudos. Regardless of the opportunity or past experience, I couldn’t even begin to think about attending any event that would appear to be in support of him. My gf’s sister is a senseless Repub (she literally has no idea what they stand for - she’s just a poser) and she wanted to go hear him talk when he was in the area. So my gf decided she wanted to go with her so she could see what kind of wackos were there falling for his bullshit. I was upset that she would even consider going as I didn’t want her to be included in a head count of supporters. Turned out to be a really tiny place where they never even got in the door. Serves them right…
It would be nice if there were unaugural balls and parties.
@OldCatLady - brilliant!
@KDemo @OldCatLady. There are . There are a ton of events both pro and anti that occur. Just about every DC venue is hosting something. This is DCs NYE in a way. All the events are expensive however . I am going to avoid it. Traffic is insane. Metro is crowded. Protesters everywhere.
@CaptAmehrican My mom (a retired librarian) is going down from NJ with a few of her friends just to protest. If she’s going, I imagine you’re right that there will be a crazy number of protesters. Well, maybe appropriate would be a better word than crazy, but you know what I mean.
@Pantheist Good for your mom. Please tell her to pack hand sanitizer a rain jacket and a few extra granola bars and a water bottle in her bag. She should wear comfortable shoes and layers. It will be crowded. Even Obama and Bush were crowded and they were less contentious. She and her friends will be on their feet all the time and assume everything will take extra time. Metro will be overwhelming crowded with delays and forget about traffic she doesn’t want to drive in. From NJ getting to Greenbelt metro and parking and going from there is her best option. However greenbelt is likely to run out of parking early I would aim to be there as metro opens. .
A battery backup charger or two for phones is also a great idea. I know i have some i bought at meh here. Bring them fully charged. She will not be able to charge her phone once in dc.
@CaptAmehrican Good advice, thanks! I’ll pass it along.
@Pantheist Also if they are bringing a sign consider fabric paint on fabric which can easy be folded and packed n bag. A peice of poster board will become obnoxious to hold before even arrive.
Also if she doesn’t have amtrak tickets forget train from nj as they are sold out already.
@CaptAmehrican Pretty sure they’re driving.
@Pantheist High-resolution images to make posters for the Women’s March and the We the People march can be downloaded for free. http://theamplifierfoundation.org/wtp_wmw_highresart/
You should go. 1. You are helping out a friend. 2. If you aren’t a Trump supporter, you’ll find out the capacity of your inner strength to hold back the venomous outburst you surely are holding within. 3. You’re probably going to stay at a hotel afterwards and DC hotels have great showers. Utilize them to clean the gobs of filth you will accumulate over the course of the day. Unfortunately, the emotional filth will remain with you for years.
I find this hysterical.
