Enjoy-a-bowl for the fur babies
8As I think most folks know, my moms dog was recently diagnosed with diabetes. One of the biggest challenges she faced was getting him to eat 2x a day on a schedule. He was always a grazer, eating whenever he wanted and to be honest as of late he wasn’t eating much of anything.
She (and I) was hand feeding him and having to try different items mixed in with the food to get him to even peck at it.
Then one day I received and advertisement from my puppers health insurance company for something called Enjoy-a-bowl. This thing is AMAZING. Once she started using it he gobbled up his kibble as quick as he could.
Anyway just thought I would share in case anyone else was struggling.
Here is a link to the web site, if you want to check it out. It is not a referral link or anything like that. It is just not an item that is widely advertised and I felt it was worth sharing

That would work for cats too. My almost 20 year old is getting very picky about eating, seems to think whatever I have for me is better than cat food and needs offered food about every 2 hours to eat enough (still she barely clears 6 pounds, is part Maine Coon and when she weighed 12 pounds she looked perfect; the only reason why she doesn’t look like skin and bones now is long fur). Any strong smelling human food put in there would likely entice her.
@Kidsandliz it is worth a try!!!
What an interesting idea! Thanks!
I know this is my humanity speaking, and I shouldn’t anthropomorphise pets, but this seems horribly cruel to me…
Here you go, my life companion that I love so much!! Eat through this bowl of gross kibble so you can get to the delicious grilled steak below… oh wait, you can’t have the steak!
The steak is a lie! We are basically GLaDOS!!!
@curtise except that by feeding your pet the human food you can be setting them up for other medical issues.
Also, in some cases the pet must be on a special diet and you cannot force them to eat, so if tricking them into eating something that will help them in the long run works, count me in. No different than tricking kids with cauliflower mashed "potatoes "
@curtise @tinamarie1974 I think that with the incredibly sensitive noses they have, it might actually make the food they’re allowed to have taste better. I’ve always heard that your sense of taste is very closely tied to your sense of smell.
Nice idea! I would definitely have to clean out the bowl immediately or she would chew it up thinking it was one of those puzzle toys. She has a really good nose for treats!
@callow I think it depends on the dog. Moms dog looses interest when the bait food cools down. I guess it is not as fragrant when it is cold? My pup, however, tries to eat through the bowl pressing his head on the bottom to push his way to those tasty morsels regardless. He does not succeed, but oh he tries lol
What is one supposed to do with the bait food after it has served its purpose? Throwing away perfectly edible food seems wasteful. Owners aren’t expected to eat if after pet drool and small bits of pet food have been scattered over it, are they?
@DrWorm whatever you wish I guess. It does not take much - about one chicken nugget is plenty. You can use scraps from your plate, so before hitting the trash they get a second life.
@DrWorm @tinamarie1974 Well if I used tuna for my cat I’d just take the top off when she was done eating what she is supposed to eat and let her lick that bottom bowl clean. You know. Desert. Right?
@DrWorm I’m guessing you may be able to reuse the bait a few times before it’s not useful? After mealtime, toss the bait into a baggie and into the fridge. Next mealtime just warm it up for a few second in the microwave, lather, rinse, repeat until the bait food is so emaciated it’s totally lost any aroma?
@DrWorm @ruouttaurmind correct! My mom uses the same item two or three days.
