Easties vs. Westies Mini-Contest
8It has been discussed here ad nauseam. East vs West. Westies have the advantage for deals and FUKU. I agree. So here is a mini-contest. Prize will be a gift card of some kind (decided by stars). I need to start some shit before my goat month is over. In 20 words or less tell me who is better and why (memes and gifs also excepted).
Best Coast vs Least Coast
Tupac vs Biggie
Lagunitas vs Dogfish (beer)
Avocado Sandwiches vs Cheesesteaks
Water vs Drought
You get the idea. . Why do you hate the other coast? Let me know. Texas, don't bother. Both coasts think you suck.
East Coat is better because.........
West Coast is better because..........
p.s. I blame @DaveInSoCal and @Jaremelz for this.

West Coast is better because we're on fire.
@DrunkCat while I like this, it also makes me sad.
@mfladd You don't like dry humour?
@DrunkCat Too many mix tapes.
@DrunkCat hot topic
@Thumperchick I put all my mixes into my kindle and then fire it up.
@jaremelz that's just wrong attacking my Patriots. Ok, it's not :)
@mfladd I try to be nice, but you make it so, hard.
@jaremelz jealous cause the pats still hold more rings in the last 20 years
@Squid_07 She is just being mean. She doesn't even like football. (they hate us, cause they ain't us)
@mfladd Of course I'm mean, don't act surprised. And even someone who doesn't follow your silly obsession can tell you that at least our team doesn't cheat to win. (not just talking about last year).
Silly goat.
@jaremelz Yeah... but then the silly goat will tell us they all cheat, directing us to a ridiculous little article. Because Patriots fans have to arm themselves with that kind of nonsense. Because Patriots cheat.
@mfladd You forgot us in the middle? No... never mind, I don't know why I live here. No one cares enough to hate the middle.
@Barney he's a goat, all right.
@Barney don't give them any ideas about moving here... let's keep 'em cramped out on the coasts.
@Barney there's a middle? Red state?, Blue state? ohhhhhhh - Purple state.
@thismyusername Pick a side!
@thismyusername Yeah, we'll have to sit this one out. Guess I'll go and eat some of my home grown tomatoes. I'll start throwing them if I see anything I don't like being said here.
Edit: The first tomato goes to you, @mfladd, and I have a very wicked aim.
@mfladd which one is Hawaii on?
@Barney Are they Cherokee Purples?
@thismyusername West coast, you Bastard! Same with Alaska.
@Barney if it helps you choose a side, @mfladd represents the East Coast!
@mfladd ok West then, because Hawaii and
@brhfl Grape Nehi, purple grapes, even beets, I will eat. But purple potatoes and tomatoes can cause this ex goat to go bleat, BLEAT!
@Barney There's a reason they're called the "flyover states"...
@jqubed Like I haven't heard that before...
@Barney I can't believe you don't grow Cherokee Purple tomatoes.
@Barney Hey you have your own TV show and it's a good one!
@Mfladd two words: Manifest Destiny. Send my beer prize to the meh home office with my compliments.
@DaveInSoCal - Right, and the Corps of Discovery. West Coast is the Promised Land.
If you love America, you'll realize our founding fathers nailed it when they opted to land on the East Coast.
@brhfl - I saw where people were giving Plymouth Rock a lot of negative reviews on Yelp.
(Who would do that?)
@KDemo I grew up nearby, it does underwhelm pretty much everyone. The cheesy recreation of the Mayflower nearby gets a stronger reaction from people.
@brhfl And then the smart and brave ones all moved away...to the west coast!
West coast has California girls.
West coast has Los Angeles, future home to the Oakland Raiders, Saint Louis Rams and San Diego Chargers. (hahahahaha!)
West coast has wild parrots in the tree in our yard.
West coast has earthquakes.
West coast has missiles gone wild.
West coast has some really neat sunrises every once in a while.
West coast has Disneyland and lots of blondes.
And me. The west coast has me.
And that's why the west coast should win.
And screw the twenty words or less.....I blame @mfladd and this glass of wine for my inability to comprehend what I read.
@lisaviolet And that attitude is why I love the west coast.
@lisaviolet " Oakland Raiders, Saint Louis Rams and San Diego Chargers" that's part of your argument? You standards are set low I see.
@lisaviolet I just changed the rules to 20 images or less and unlimited words for you. Because, screw you @mfladd
@mfladd Did ya catch the laughter after?
@jaremelz Thank you, sister friend!
@lisaviolet I did, but I still had to take my shot at crappy teams because I am a football a-hole.
@mfladd I don't follow football anymore. Quit in the summer of 2011. So, it doesn't matter to me who goes where.
And what does it matter who wins if they have to cheat to do it?
@lisaviolet Oh no you didn't! :) Another hater in the house! "They Hate Us, Cause They Ain't Us".
@lisaviolet LOVE the disneyland pic!
@mfladd I made that shirt with pink glitter vinyl after reading the joke on Facebook. I wear it to Disneyland.
@lisaviolet I also have to add east coast - Disney WORLD, west coast - Disney LAND. Just say'in. But I am completely neutral here :)
@mfladd Yeah, but without the land, there'd be no world. You have to start somewhere and it started with a mouse in Anaheim.....
A) East coast is better. I mean just just look at yoru comparison list. Who wants Avocado sandwiches & not having enough water?
B) I refuse to believe that West Coast has an "advantage" on meh. I just spent a week on the west coast, and missed meh every night - I'm out doing shit at 9pm. And whose going to bed before midnight? Thats just ridiculous.
@MrGlass over 20 words. Disqualified - try again.
(but I agree with you on A)
@mfladd
Taken in my backyard. Tree ripened avocados...yummmmm
@mfladd How about: "East coast is better. I mean just look at yoru comparison list. Who wants Avocado sandwiches & not having water?"
@lisaviolet That is a sad, tiny little avocado. I lived in LA for over a decade, never got any fruit from the trees in our backyard.
And you can grow shit on the east coast too. I currently live in the garden state
@MrGlass I'm with you!
@lisaviolet but can you grow Philly Cheesesteaks?
@MrGlass But it's just a baby! It was only three months old when I took the photo! Just wait until it hits puberty! And has a growth spurt!
(This is the size of the fruit the people sell at the side of the road, ten for a buck.)
We got these little trees for fifteen bucks each three years ago at our local Costco. One has given us fruit all three years (a whole four avocados each year) and this is the first year the other did anything.
We can grow shit outside year round. How's about you?
And we're supposed to be getting a shit ton of rain this year. That would be really nice. I like rain.
@mfladd Those things look and smell nasty.
@mfladd
@MrGlass Sorry, that's a typo...it's supposed to be the "Guard em" state
When I lived in San Diego I couldn't buy a sandwich without alfalfa sprouts.
@sammydog01 Do they even make those any more? Alfalfa sprouts, I mean?
@lisaviolet I don't know, I left. But I can tell you that I pulled them out of my sandwiches and gave them to my hamster who promptly used them for bedding. And right before I left we had two earthquakes a week apart with a major brush fire in between. My car was covered in ash. So long, farewell...
@sammydog01 This is oddly similar to a central plot point in Inside Out (San Francisco only has broccoli pizza)
@sammydog01 Mmmm, Sprouts. my favorite think to put on an Avocado sandwich.
@badmnky EEEWWWW
@sammydog01 Actually, that looks pretty yummy. Add some turkey and you've got a great sammy.
@sammydog01 looks good, needs olives!
@badmnky @lisaviolet No, needs roast beef, cheddar cheese, and less green and red stuff.
East Coast- we have cheese steaks, good pizza, and the Internet.
@dashcloud yes, pizza is correct. And don't be bringing me that deep dish shit, Chicago! Uno's is dead.
@dashcloud And this is why I love the East Coast.
Rocky Mountains. Neither Coast. No words needed.
@christinewas what states are in the middle again?
@mfladd Kansas--flatter than a pancake and nobody cares. http://www2.ljworld.com/news/2003/jul/27/holy_hotcakes_study/
@mfladd The good ones (and a few sad places like Kansas... which is why I had to specify the Rockies). Part of what makes us great is not having all the people. So it's alright if you never realize how incredible Montana and Colorado are.
@Barney don't feel so bad. Eastern Shore of MD doesn't have one hill and is only a few feet above sea level. We are eventually doomed.
@mfladd Yeah, but we don't even qualify for your contest.
@Barney Yes, you do. Just pick a side. (look to the east).
@Barney I'd say that not living on either coast is prize enough. But that might not be true if you live in Kansas. I want to say something positive anout Kansas, but all I'm coming up with is "It's not Texas!" Which is pretty awesome. And I guess there's the lack of crowding, too.
@mfladd Nope, you should have asked @JonT to delete this thread and started over again. I will never forgive you (or at the very least, I won't forgive you tonight).
@christinewas I lived in Colorado for five years. I loved it, but then I was banished back to Kansas. At least it costs a lot less to live in Kansas, probably because no one wants to be here.
@Barney Oh yeah! Cost of living! We went from KC (technically the MO side) to Colorado and it was a pretty rough transition.
@christinewas I see you rocky mountains and raise you Crater Lake, West Coast Best Coast.
@christinewas San Diego. The motto here is "America's Finest City" (and yes, that's snow in the mountains).
@Saffer49 Glacier National Park. I stubbornly refuse to believe anything (outside of Alaska) could possibly beat Glacier. It isn't really raising when you didn't even call.
@lisaviolet America's finest city? Possible. But "America's Finest" isn't in the city. Yes, the West coast is beautiful. But, seriously: Glacier National Park.
Now, if we count Alaska, the West coast wins; No competition. Alaska is stunning... if somewhat less inhabitable.
@christinewas That is true. I claim Alaska as west coast.
@lisaviolet And Hawaii, Hawaii counts for the west coast too!
@Barney Did you got back to Kansas in a big balloon? Or did you just click your heels 3 times ?
@ceagee Actually, I drove back in a bright orange VW van.
@Barney I had a vw bus once. They are wonderful.
Mine was ugly brown and tan. Orange sounds nicer.
@ceagee I should never have sold it. I still miss it.
@lisaviolet How did you photoshop out the smog?
@sammydog01 No smog. San Diego isn't as bad as Los Angeles. Plus we'd had a recent storm that brought rain to the coast and snow in the mountains, helping to clean the air.
@Barney That's the color of the one I took to Mexico. Orange and white. Her name was Bessie and I loved her.
@lisaviolet It is a beautiful photo. I graduated in 1988, so the air is probably cleaner than I remember.
@jaremelz Let me guess. With all sorts of hidden compartments to bring back your coffee and Souvenirs?
@Barney mine croaked. The engine froze going up a mountain. A friend and I were on cross-country trip w/ 2 cats a dog and a rabbit. I had to hitch hike w/ a stoner trucker to get help. and hitch back w/ a lech truck driver. ugh. First one was more fun : )
It was in crappy shape when I bought it -- a completely emotional purchase. And I shoved a bunch of money into it.
and yet. I still loved it. I still have the keys !
@ceagee @jaremelz I have a framed picture of my van on my desk. Gee, I loved that ol' van, but when you need money, you do what you gotta do. I found her a good home, though, and I still see her around town every so often.
@Barney I would have wanted her. We had a yellow one growing up.
@mfladd @jaremelz @ceagee Mine looked like this
and I mean exactly like this. She was in perfect condition when I sold her. In fact, I sold her for 5K more than I paid for her. I am really kicking myself for getting rid of her.
Gee, guys, thanks for making feel so good. sniff
@Barney That is awesome - bad move on your part. Sorry, I didn't mean to make you feel B........ Wait. Still a bad move - those are iconic. (but money is needed when needed :) I hate messing with you too much - but I am Goat!
@Barney oh you had a pop up. cool. Mine was not.
it was more like this only more rust lol
I liked the steering wheel flat, and not having the whole thing out in front. But not as safe though.
sigh. Memories...
@ceagee Yeah, memories... (The tire on the front was supposed to give more protection in case of an accident. Fortunately, never had to try this out.)
@Barney That's identical to my Bessie! She was a 78 pop top in that color combo. She was phenomenal. We drove her from Seattle to southern Mexico and back. Never had a spot of trouble from her, right up until we crossed the border back to the states. She wouldn't start after the inspection. She didn't want to leave any more than I did! So, the US border guards helped us push our bus into the country.
A couple months after we got home, she broke down. We took her to a supposed specialist, who promptly broke her even more and then tried to fleece us. We couldn't pay for it, so we let her go. We got a letter some time after that informing us it was all a racket. The good news is, she came into the hands of a retiree that still has and loves her. I'd own one again in a heartbeat.
@jaremelz Mine was a '74, bought her from a couple moving to California and they were afraid she wouldn't pass emissions. Kept her until '97 when I had to sell her to pay medical bills. I was such an idiot, who needs a fully functioning heart when you have a beautiful orange van like that?
@Barney You may have paid for medical bills, but I'll bet part of your heart stayed with her. Sniff. Ok now I'm sad too!
@jaremelz Damn it, it's all @mfladd's fault.
Easters arrogantly claim it's the next day 3 hours early, West Coast gets it right on time!
@KDemo Easters?
@mfladd Yes.
I'm so confused.
@Barney
@Barney I bet you're confused by why @mfladd would open up this debate... when his coast is so obviously inferior. It confuses me, too.
@christinewas I just wanted to start a Meh. East/West civil war before I left as goat ;)
@mfladd And you have forgotten us in the middle, AGAIN! What kind of East Coast snob are you?
@mfladd hates westerns. That's it, that's the prejudice. The whole category of movies and all the states they're representing are shite to @mfladd. I'm sure Hateful Eight will only be absolute brilliance that @mfladd can't watch cuz of his severe aversion to westerns.
@denboy not the Spaghetti (which the east coast does better) type
Aren't you in Texas - Disqualified!
@mfladd Spaghetti westerns like many westerns weren't filmed in the location of their subject matter but they're still about places like Texas. So you must dislike them equally. Since they're called westerns some left coasters should probably claim them.
Well kids, it's a little warm here, so I think I'll go take a quick dip in the pool and do a little stargazing. Back in 45. Cause it will be nine o'clock an the new meh offering will be up.
@lisaviolet yup...still hate you :)
@mfladd No you don't. You wish I lived next door to you.
Wait....scratch that....you wish YOU lived next door to ME. Then you'd be on the West coast and that rhymes with BEST coast.
West Coast has dispenseries, and legal recreational use. GAME OVER
@escowhat - Related:
Only in Portland.
@escowhat good point
@escowhat WC gets the sympathy vote. When they get the munchies, they have neither good pizza nor good bagels to munch upon. :(
@KDemo Blue Star is better.
@Saffer49 They look good.
To be honest, haven't tried either.
@KDemo Blue Star, ah. But far better than any either of them is the glory to be found at Pine State Biscuits. Om nom nom.
@KDemo
East Coast is best because New York City.
And bagels.
Did I mention bagels?
@heartny Bagels, yes. NYC not so much.
@sammydog01 How about The Hamptons? :-)
@heartny Compton - they even have a movie out about Compton.
@lisaviolet @heartny
Vote for the flyover states!!! Contrary to what both the east and west coasts believe, we take up the majority of the space in the USA.
@Kidsandliz And we keep the coasts away from each other. Imagine the bloodshed without that buffer!
@christinewas I would like to extend my deepest gratitude for keeping @mfladd just that much further away.
The east coast has The Walking Dead!
West Coast- Best sushi, best mexican food, best rock, best rap, some of the best companies (i.e. Apple, Google), and me.
West Coast - Is the best by far, you can actually go places there aren't people and it's still a nice place to be, go ahead and google it.
@badmnky - Right, you can ocean surf and snow ski in the same day. (Most years, when there's snow)
If you want to go to the International Space Station your only options are the East Coast: Florida or Virginia.
@jqubed Which is good... because there's nothing that'll make you want to leave the planet quite like being stuck on the East Coast.
@christinewas Or you can go to the West Coast and basically be on another planet.
@christinewas You can leave the planet on the West Coast, from Alaska or California, but you can only go south. That's a bad way to meet the International Space Station.
East Coasters are like lame people that go to bed at 8pm... when the party's just getting started.
@christinewas I'm still up and it's 1 am!
@jqubed Ditto for me too. Wide awake on the East Coast.
@heartny I'll probably crash hard soon, though; it's been a big weekend. This is the first night I got home before midnight. Baseball game I was watching Friday went 14 innings. Did you know they actually do the 7th inning stretch every 7 innings? "I don't care if I never get back" takes on new, ominous significance when you're singing it for the second time.
@jqubed That's just the thing, though. By the time the rest of us have reached 1am, will you still be awake?
@christinewas I will be awake, in fact I still am. My friends think I'm a vampire.
@heartny I get that from my friends, too. Silly daywalkers.
@christinewas I call them Morning People. I am not one of them and will not be assimilated.
@christinewas Sadly, probably yes. I might pretend like I went to sleep sooner, but probably not.
@jqubed You just made me literally lol. I got dirty looks from the pups since it's after 2a..yep that's right after 2a and this east coaster's still up! Too much sweet tea. Sweet tea, another reason the EC is better.
@mehbee Or too much chocolate, in my case.
@mehbee Hey, sweet tea is certainly a contributor to why I'm still awake at this moment, too!
Seattle coffee, California wine, Hawaiian pineapple, Alaskan king crab.
@KDemo Don't drink coffee, can't drink alcohol, allergic to shellfish. Other than that, I'm the life of the party.
@Barney Can you enjoy great weather? You would be happy here. Purple sunsets over the Pacific.
@KDemo Or you can enjoy purple sunsets over the Atlantic
@KDemo We have all that too..
@KDemo @heartny Do y'all think you can win me over with purple promises? Well, you're right.
@heartny psst... Sunrises, not sunsets, unless you're talking about limited portions of New England and maybe the Carolinas.
@heartny - Can you see the green flash?
@jqubed I think what I posted is a Canadian sunset over Ontario, eh. Still East Coast-ish.
@KDemo How could you forget the most important one, Oregon Beer!
@KDemo @Barney Yep, 72 degrees and sunny. Every. Damn. Day. Except for the Santa Anas when it's like sticking your head in a blast furnace- I had to quit riding my bike because the wind was so strong. And fall is much nicer than fire season.
@KDemo lol you guys have to claim alaska and hawaii to be cool enough, huh
hell you guys may as well claim British Columbia too because the skiing is great
@Lotsofgoats The hilarious thing is that they don't need them to beat the East. And yet... @mfladd threw it to them anyway. The man is most secure when losing is certain. (Need proof? You can start with his fantasy football league.)
@christinewas
@Barney
I took this last night, it's the moon. I thought of you when I downloaded it this morning.
@lisaviolet Aww. That is such a beautiful picture.
Yosemite
@KDemo Montauk Point. The End.
@heartny West Coast has those too.
@KDemo The Adirondaks- 6.2 million acres of park in New York
@sammydog01 Santee lakes. 194 acres of park in Santee.
@KDemo Ahh, Kansas!
Oh, oh, Kansas!
Olympic National Park includes Pacific Coastline, temperate rainforests, lakes, hot springs, and The Olympic Mountains with ancient glaciers.
@lisaviolet My park is bigger than your park. By just shy of 6.2 million acres.
@sammydog01 That is true.
@KDemo Ahh, look at all of my backyard! Now you're in my neck of the woods with these locations! You can go from the beach to the mountains in no time at all, can't beat that!
@jaremelz Those Pacific Northwest Beaches only get to, like, 55 degrees in the summer, and with that damp coastal air it feels even colder. You want a coat on the beach in July! And even down south, do you really want to get in the Pacific without a wetsuit on? Maybe in San Diego, but it's not like our East Coast beaches with water warmed by the Gulf Stream.
East Coast is better, because I live here. Also, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Orlando. Bitch.
But I would like to add that I really miss the west coast. A lot.
@Thumperchick HP world will arrive in LA universal studios soon enough.
@connorbush It's not there yet, though.
West coast is better because more naked. Like bikinis and Speedo and what not.
@connorbush That isn't always better.
@connorbush I guess you've never been to Miami?
@connorbush Apparently you haven been to Times Square this week.
@jqubed blast, I forgot about Miami
@connorbush How can you forget about Miami?!
@connorbush NYC literally had its topless parade yesterday
Heck we have THE CAPITOL OF THE UNITED STATES!! Ok, maybe that's a mark against us.
Possibly the worst thing about the West Coast: too many Californians. Oregonians will back me up on this.
@jqubed agreed. A disgruntled Californiaian.
@connorbush Seconded.
@Mfladd either way... everyone always needs to remember rule #1....
Broadway, Liberty Bell, Smithsonian, Jersey tomatoes, Georgia peaches. Hell, even the Pope! East Coast all the way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mathematical/logical analysis indicates that the West Coast is vastly superior. But that takes more than twenty words to explain.
@christinewas geological analysis does not
@Lotsofgoats I think I disagree. But I'm not a geologist, so I won't make any definitive statements.
@christinewas One word: earthquakes. East
Coast wins, West Coast falls into the ocean.
@heartny Uh-oh. Researchers have actually found that the ocean is swallowing up the EAST coast, while things are remaining relatively stable out West. West coast (or no coast) wins again!
http://theweek.com/articles/561365/danger-zones-americas-shrinking-coastline
Weenies, Fried Clams, Cabinets, Orange Julius, Lancaster BBQ, Grits, Collard Greens, vs Right Turn on Red. The west coast us useless.
East Coast. . preferably the South. . . preferably Georgia.
although you have to give the yankees credit for the buffalo wing. . .
anybody eating buffalo chicken pizza is consuming DOUBLE EAST COAST
seriously though how good is buffchixpza honestly
Boston is the best because we have Tom Brady, enough said. City of Champions!
@sushiboy well said!!!!!!!!! Bean Town, Baby!
@sushiboy boston, where you celebrate your victories with burning cars and projectile vomiting
hooray!
@Lotsofgoats No, don't confuse us with Vancouver. They destroyed their own city when they lost hahahaha.
@sushiboy He is from California though.
@MrMark Ouch. The East Coast's favorite thing is borrowed from the West. That's pretty sad.
@christinewas He lives in Brookline now, far far away from the crazies in CA.
@sushiboy And so uncomfortably close to the crazies on the East Coast.
Today's water temperature, Los Angeles: 69.4 degrees
Today's water temperature, Nags Head NC: 78 degrees
Where would you rather swim?
@sammydog01 Probably LA, only because of a less chance at being ate by a shark.
@sammydog01 -
@sammydog01 The Gulf water temp here, today, is 87 degrees.
@MrMark
@MrMark
@Teripie Don't you mean the Gulf Oil.
@MrMark Crude Life Baby!
can we at least agree that Ohio is the worst and that everybody needs to go back there?
@Lotsofgoats No. We can't agree about anything. I reserve that honor for Texas.
@mfladd Three things, related to this post, but having nothing to do with either coast:
Though I will say... Much better participation! I'm certainly enjoying it. But I'm willing to give the credit to @jaremelz and @daveinsocal if that's what you really want.
East Cost, home of Philadelphia, which gave us Independence, real Philly cheese steaks, and the people who booed Santa Claus and killed Hitchbot. (And Rocky running up those steps?)
brought to you by the west coast
@Lotsofgoats The west coast. Land of opportunity.
@Lotsofgoats I stupidly clicked this and my cats freaked out. Curse you @mfladd
@ceagee Just for that here you go......
@mfladd nope. not going to click. My cats have had enough trauma for one day. Me too.
We have Krispy Kreme, Waffle House and Chick-Fil-A, also Jimmy Buffet, Elvis Presley, Bruce Springsteen and so much more. Boom!
May I just say that I love this contest? No matter who wins we all win. I've learned things about both coasts, snorted at some of the comments and seen some gorgeous photos of our wonderful country.
East. Autumn.
@Teripie And this is why I like the East Coast.
@Teripie West. Autumn.
@lisaviolet reminds me that we have Great Smoky Mountains on the east coast but not because they're actually on fire
(and yes it counts cuz part of 'em are in NC)
@Lotsofgoats Fires are my worst fear.
My husband (Brian) took that picture at our property up in Ranchita. The fire officials wouldn't let them (his brother was with him) through the main roads, so they went the back way.
Back in 2003, our petsitter showed up asking if she could bring some of her cats here. Where she lived was being evacuated. During the following days, Brian drove to the end of one of the streets and watched the smoke and fires and came home and started assembling cat carriers. We were trying to figure out how to double and triple up cats. Fortunately, it didn't get this far. Probably because there'd been small burns earlier and most of the fuel was gone.
I remember when it was finally clear enough to go walking, no more health advisories, and people were honking and cheering that people were out walking again.
The idea of tornadoes and hurricanes terrifies me, but they aren't much of a problem out here. Earthquakes don't bother me as much because the ground below this area of San Diego is granite (not a lot of rocking and rolling with granite).
But fire? Fire scares the crap out of me.
@lisaviolet Anyone who is not afraid of fire is a half wit. Florida burned like mad about 20 years back. We bought a police scanner to monitor what the hell was going on.
We worry about hurricanes, living less than 20 miles from the Gulf. But you can run from them easily enough. (And we've done it a few times.) But the house can't run and in the event of a big one, most insurance companies are not gonna pay off enough. So yeah, we worry about hurricanes.
@lisaviolet @Teripie I lived in the Blue Ridge Mountains a while back. One of my neighbors was burning brush and started a forest fire during a dry spell. The firemen stopped by my house and recommended that I leave because if the wind shifted I wouldn't be able to get out. Fire scares the crap out of me too.
@lisaviolet @Teripie Hurricanes and tornadoes aren't so hard to survive anymore. You get several days' advance warning with hurricanes, so if you have a vehicle and officials don't screw-up the evacuation you should be able to get out in time. Even tornadoes generally come with a half-hour of warning now, so you should be able to get to a safe spot in time, and for the bad ones they often have a good idea of the potential over a large, general area the day before, so you may already have a heightened awareness of the need to pay attention. In both cases your property probably won't fare so well, though. But earthquakes give you no warning. No, thank you!
@lisaviolet Here in Florida our trees, in the Fall, go from green to dead.
@naropa Fire.
Bump. East Coast get in here and vote!
So there ! We win !
@ceagee I see hot chocolate, s'mores, and no school. Win for Buffalo!
@ceagee Snowmageddon. Remember it well.
West Coast
This is my buddy's dog, Moo, from a few years ago. She's retired now, and we hung out yesterday.
And just for gratuitous stars, here she is as a puppy with her first lifejacket:
@MrMark Ugh. But still, East Coast:
@DaveInSoCal Awwwww! So cute.
@sammydog01 I refuse to believe ^ this comment is about anything other than the Jersey Shore cast
Of the top 10 tourist attractions in the world: 7 on the East Coast, 2 on neither coast, one on the West Coast. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/02/26/most-visited-attractions_n_4858066.html
@naropa Niagara Falls!
Vote for my "East Coast Autumn" pictures. Don't let the West win with their 12 starred "West Coast on Fire" post.
@Teripie I think you need to follow @thismyusernames's lead and post a thread of why you should win!
@Teripie C'mon, east coast people- vote! And midwest folks too- they steal your water.
@sammydog01 good point!
But I am completely neutral here ;)
@Teripie Done
So I pulled up air pollution information from the American Lung Association. In all three categories (ozone levels, particle pollution, and short-term particle pollution) one of the top ten places was taken by a city on the east coast and six were taken by west coast cities. And the top five were all California. Until an earthquake knocks California into the Pacific the east coast is the big winner in air quality.
http://www.stateoftheair.org/2015/city-rankings/most-polluted-cities.html
@sammydog01 San Diego is a no show! Woohoo!
@lisaviolet Congrats!
@sammydog01 That's because the West Coast people are such horrible polluters but they blow all their pollution our way. Do we really want to support such people?
33 Reasons The West Coast Is The Best Coast
Reason number 34. - Me. Seriously. Here's a picture of me showing you that I am out standing in my field.
This is like a beauty contest between Janet Napolitano and Janet Reno.
@AlohaSnackbar
@AlohaSnackbar
East vs West doesn't really matter because eventually only East Coast will be left.
Really just a matter of time until East wins... Maybe Meh will send West VMP's floaties?
@Mith But just think... unless it happens pretty much instantly all those east coasters who moved to the west coast, overwhelmed the folks already there who made it what it was, and proceeded to make it what it is today... they'll all come flooding back to you. The west will overwhelm the east, raise your rents, take up all the reservations at the good restaurants, and drive even worse than easties do...
Then the midwest will tremble and fall under its own incompetence, and the non-coastal desert and mountain West shall rise and show all you easy living coasties how its done!
I can't believe I forgot to post this until now:
Florida is East coast but the Panhandle is in Central time. I'm going East Coast 'cause Prime Time starts at 7pm. We have the 10 O'clock news not 11. Drops the mic!
Umm east coat gets cold there and they need to wear coats in the wintertime so they don't freeze...oh you really meant to say east "coast" is better than west coast ..
@mfladd, I had to pick at you as I know autocorrect got you..happens to me too :)
@AttyVette Ha! I didn't even notice it until you said something :) Nah....I do that shit all the time. My mind types faster than my fingers. People have come to expect it from me.
@AttyVette Seriously. All the time. I don't even bother to use it against him about 19 times out of 20.
West Coast better than East Coast because:
West Coast studios make movies where people act as cartoon characters but East coast (in nations capital), real characters reside.
Both coasts can go fall in the ocean for all I care. ;)
@kazriko But then at some point you become the coast.
@MrMark True, but at an elevation of 4500ft above sea level, it would take quite some time.
We should pause for a moment to extend a hug to the East Coast dwellers on here. This whole thing has been so humiliating for them.
Do you like typing Meh.com or would you rather type 138.91.152.247 each time?
If you prefer Meh.com, you should thank the East Coast for keeping the Internet's address book for you.
@dashcloud Of course, that is redundant across many servers around the world.
@cf1 is that Assateague? This is my neck of the woods.
I'm pretty sure I borrowed it from a Chincoteague website but they didn't specify. We don't have anything quite like that in Bethesda....
@cf1 They are both the same. Assateague is the MD side. Chincoteague is the VA side.
@mfladd Yeah, I just wanted to brag about our ponies. And our beautiful shores.
How about
Breweries per capita
West Coast:
Washington: 5.0
Oregon: 7.4
California: 1.6
East Coast
Connecticut: 1.0
Delaware: 1.6
DC: 1.6
Florida: 0.8
Maine: 5.2
Maryland: 0.9
Massachusetts: 1.2
New Hampshire: 2.7
New Jersey: 0.5
New York: 1.3
Vermont: 8.6
(etc... i got the important ones.)
So: East Coast, you trade Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine for California and you become the clear winner in the population density and dwindling natural resource division and the West coast wins in the beer, nature, and personal freedoms (physician assisted suicide, vote by mail, legal weed, etc) division. Deal?
@Mehntok there is no way anyone is going to agree to trade 3 beautiful NE states for CA. Trade refused.
@mfladd but what if it's what VT, NH, and ME want? ... maybe we can find common ground by reconceptualizaing:
Step 1: obtain Canada (or cede AK, WA, OR, VT, NH, ME to Canada a la Infinite Jest, minus the nuclear waste)
Step 2: Create a North Coast
Step 3: North Coast has all the time zones and wins.
(Why be a hater? Having a favorite coast feels like having a favorite parenthesis. I like it all.)
BTW, the actual west coast of the US would be somewhere in Guam, I believe.
@joelmw pick a side..or stand aside. No room for togetherness in this thread!
@mfladd
@mfladd How's that for taking sides?
@joelmw ok, your mad about the Texas thing, aren't you? Perhaps I was harsh with that. Guess what? Nope - Fuck you too :)~
@mfladd
Give me a few months and you can have Texas. Yeah, for all I care, you personally. Hell, take Oklahoma too.
@joelmw ok, not exactly sure what that meant, but where are you off to then?
@joelmw - Agree with your comment, I lost interest in all the contention. This land was made for you and me ;-)
@mfladd Texas is the worst. @joelmw is just taking a bit longer to escape than I did.
@KDemo But you understand that contention was exactly what I was going for (evil grin)
@christinewas If he hates Texas too, my poking him with a stick was a waste of time....damn!
I'd say you were successful. Kumbaya, @mfladd, Kumbaya.
@mfladd This should be on The Chive... mind the gap.
@Teripie We need to talk. You are down by 1 vote. Stand up for the Easties! Campaign. Start a thread. Do Something, before I have to call this contest.
@mfladd I need to get my husband on here....
We have rain, but not too much. Same for sun. And everyday I see this,
Oh, and can't forget, @mfladd ,
@jaremelz well, I guess all the Westies should just send me their best fuck you pics!
@mfladd Is that a request for more? I'm sure it can be arranged.
@jaremelz sure. start a thread. everyone say "fuck you" to @mfladd - I would enjoy it. I need more entertainment before my reign is done.
@jaremelz ok, so I did as I said and logged in as my husband, but I couldn't resist starring this too!!!
@mikibell Thanks! We think we are pretty lucky to live with this almost as our backyard (a few blocks). That, and no one can resist flipping off the goat.
@jaremelz - Hey, I'm your neighbor too!
@KDemo I keep forgetting this! It's like I'm @mfladd or something!
I lost track...did we win?
This contest is now officially closed. Winner(s) to be announced tomorrow.
I have already counted the votes so don't bother adding any.
@mfladd
@christinewas this thread sat dormant for quite a while and I did not put a time frame on it. I figured to do it now before I go to bed. You might be surprised at what will happen.
Which side won?
@Teripie always west.
@Teripie Doesn't really mean that much to me. I'm central. However, if I lived just 20 miles to the east I'd be eastern.
@Teripie I will always think of you as Eastern my Dolphin friend :)
@mfladd I think you goated up your contest- it's now Saturday, and you were supposed to announce the winner on Thursday.
@dashcloud Yeeeeees!
@dashcloud results have been posted.
@dashcloud I actually encouraged him to go for a JonT interpretation of "tomorrow" and take his time. Seemed appropriate for the goat to be slow.
@dashcloud I mean... Ummm... not to take any of the blame away from @mfladd.
@christinewas It's not too late for you to be September's goat you know :)
Results are in - and it was soooo close! WE had a very hotly contested battle!!! Thank you, for allowing me a successful Civil War. And while I live for giving other parts of the country shit, you showed me why all of it is great! But I think one post by our friend @meebee sums it up best.......
"May I just say that I love this contest? No matter who wins we all win. I've learned things about both coasts, snorted at some of the comments and seen some gorgeous photos of our wonderful country."
I tried to stay as neutral as possible, but it wasn't always the case. For this reason here are the winners (yes, I said winners - plural) of this contest.
1) @Teripie for the East. Autumn. (We are the Best!)
2) @DrunkCat for the West. with... "we are on fire"
3) @Christinewas for the flyover states. "Rocky Mountains. No Coast" You didn't pick a coast, but you still get a prize. (@Barney you were so close when the votes were tallied)
Remember this was a mini-contest and you will get mini prizes of Amazon Gift Cards (amount based on 1st - 3rd).
Please send me a usable email address to have it sent: mehgoat@yahoo.com
Congratulations to all of you for making this fun. You all provided amazing pics of your neck of the woods!
p.s. Westies still suck! (and so does Texas) :)
@mfladd I am surprised. I didn't think you'd be able to handle calling a no-coast submission a winner. But... I'll take it! Thanks, goat!
@christinewas UGH...you flyover states caught me at a vulnerable moment and your votes were right up there with the coasts.
@mfladd Vulnerable position, you say?
@mfladd Holy shit, I actually won something. The stars must be in utter misalignment.
@DrunkCat Don't worry. We'll get that straightened out before fantasy football starts. You don't need to try to get used to winning or anything.
@mfladd hurrayyyyyy! Knew we had to win!
@Teripie please send me your email so I may gift you.
Oh Shit, the post I quoted was from at @mehbee - I goated that up too, sorry @mehbee.
@mfladd Just shake it off and keep going.
I, for one, cannot wait to see how many things you can goat up in a couple of days.
@mfladd Sent you an email yesterday. Just now resent it.
@Teripie got this one.
@mfladd Well, what can I say? I'm a loser...
Edit: Wait a minute, I never entered your contest, so I guess I'm not a loser.
@Teripie I resent lots of things, but I don't think I would resent an email about a prize.
@Barney actually you were in the contest as a flyover state you just didn't know it. p.s. and you are never a loser. You are always PURPLE to me.
@sammydog01 Ha! :)
@sammydog01 Ha ha.
@mfladd Aw, you are a sweetie.
@mfladd That's ok. Didn't see the email until today so the delay was perfect as my Monday started off...well as a Monday. Congrats East, West and No Coasts!!
Well done, @mfladd
My true feelings...
@lisaviolet is my hero.
@lisaviolet love it!
@lisaviolet I would also like to say that I was listening to Tool on Pandora when I clicked on that and the juxtaposition was the fabulous.
@lisaviolet beautiful
@lisaviolet Ha ha. Good job.
@jaremelz
@mfladd Haha, thanks, dillhole.
@lisaviolet This woke my dog up when I played it. I don't think she will ever forgive me (or @mfladd).
@Teripie, @DrunkCat, @christinewas prizes are in your inbox. Congrats again!
@mfladd Holy crap you were generous! Now it's going to make me feel real bad when I kick your ass in football!
Thanks!
You can all go to hell, I will go to Texas
@bryanlc same thing.
