Dunkirk
3I recently saw Dunkirk since it was re-released as a best picture special at the movies. I don’t understand all the hype.
The musical composition made me severely anxious throughout to the point I was starting to feel ill. I ended up starting to sweat towards the end and then I had the severe chills walking to my car where my teeth where chattering. It wasn’t even cold outside.
Afterwards I found out there was a lot of inaccuracies as well.
I mean the plane running out of fuel and gliding forever, turning, taking out a bomber, and then landing. That was glaringly obvious. There was so many other things that I had no idea about such as how many people survived, how much equipment was left at the beach, the medical ship didn’t sink right there… so on, so forth.
So, what did you think?

I hope to go on Saturday.
@sammydog01 oops. Spoiler alert.
@RiotDemon Wait, the Germans won?
@sammydog01 haha. I actually had no idea what Dunkirk was all about.
I saw it when it first came out in theaters. It’s fascinating because it’s not like the usual war films- it has a different focus.
I’m a fan of both Tom Hardy and Cillian Murphy so I saw it on it’s first run. It was certainly a very good film, but the absence of focus on any particular element or character and the scarcity of dialogue left me feeling outside the film, more like I was watching a really good documentary than living the event through masterful storytelling.
I read this title and thought @ThomasF had come up with a new game for tonight.
Dunk Irk.
@Thumperchick @matthew and I discussed that very thing when we saw Ragnarok earlier this year. I kept trying to convince him to make it as a video!
@matthew @slydon I would very much like it to be a thing.
I thought it was ok, but nowhere near as good as people made it out to be.
@ELUNO Same, an interesting film/take on a war movie, but it kind of just trudged on.
Was anyone else bothered by the amount of focus on Harry Styles? Feel like that money could’ve been used to…I don’t know, write a plot line.
@wmbarr i haven’t seen it but i thought the plotline was people can do a lot of good when they choose to even when “it’s not my job.” So i was expecting them to highlight the choices made by multiple characters and therefore a little disjointed, but hopefully able to “bring it together” with likely some sort of Hollywood spin fictionalizing pieces.
Sorry to hear it failed that for most.
@wmbarr I didn’t even know who it was. I didn’t feel like there was too much focus on anyone.
@wmbarr Personally, I wouldn’t know Harry Styles if he walked up to me, extended his hand, and said, “Hi. I’m Harry Styles.” I know he was in some boy band or something similar…
@tohar1 He was in One Direction. He looks a bit like if Johnny Depp and Justin Bieber had a love child, innit.

@ruouttaurmind @tohar1 Looks like a young Luke Evans to me.

@ruouttaurmind Looks to me like his mommy should spread a little cream on his lip & let the kitty cat do its job…
The timeline jumping around bothered me the most. Overall the movie was just OK.
The soundtrack is intended to make you feel anxious: https://www.vox.com/videos/2017/7/26/16033868/dunkirk-soundtrack-shepard-tone
@steady1 hmm… The Prestige didn’t make me feel sick.
@RiotDemon @steady1 It was a magical movie
@Cythwulf
Well played.
@PlacidPenguin Thanks. I’m no @ThomasF, but I do what I can.
The movie, “Mrs Miniver” does a much better job of covering Dunkirk. It’s an old movie but covers England during the German Blitz really well.
@ThomasF Maybe someone should create a Dunk Irk app. I have no coding skills.
I didn’t like it. I found it disjointed and not realistic. I liked Darkest Hour much better on the same basic theme.
@readnj I really liked the Darkest Hour. I saw it before Dunkirk and it was kind of cool to see the continuation.
I liked Dunkirk but don’t understand the Oscar nomination. Although I probably won’t go near a swimming pool for a while.
@sammydog01 did the music bother you?
Mayne my theatre needs to turn down the volume.
@RiotDemon I liked the music.
