@mehcuda67 There was a USA cartoon with ducks who were ducking, it was subtitled in Dutch and of course all the humor was lost. I had to explain it to that family.
Well, it’s been about 110 years since the last time this happened, so I guess the “Not to be consumed by ducks” warning labels on the yeast packages are working…
@chienfou Yeah, between the erudite writing style and names (it’s probably been 110 years since someone named their duck “Rhadamanthus”), this sent me into a rabbit hole of old news articles.
A lot of observations -
We didn’t invent fake news.
A lot of stuff passes/passed as news that probably shouldn’t.
They had viral news articles back then as well; they just traveled a little slower.
The care in writing style and the stuff they wrote about points to the more central role of newspapers in the local community back then. (Some of the “news” items were like slow, brief FB entries.)
@InnocuousFarmer@mehcuda67 The SF Chronicle once ran a headline (in all caps):
HUGE SALMON PLEASING FISHERMEN
leaving the readers to parse that as their imaginations saw fit …
“Man Climbs Under Moving Big Rig Filled With Wine, Begins Drinking From Tank”

Is this where the warning “Duck!” came from?

Another senseless exploding duck tragedy that could have been prevented with the proper safety equipment.
@macromeh this is why face shields must be mandatory
That’s a great idea for some fireworks. “Quack with report”

@mehcuda67
Yeah,really… when was the last time you heard anyone use the term “logy” ?
/giphy Howard the duck
Does anyone else think “Panda Eats, Shoots and Leaves” when they read that title?
@mehcuda67 The headline looks unambiguous to me. I like the semi-colon.

Heard a rumor in 1974 that seagulls would eat alka seltzer tablets and explode. Had to find out for myself. Was the rumor true?
@gary566 so was it?
